Paradox’s A Game Of Dwarves appeared, ethereally, on the imaginary wooden shelves our internet shops this week, and so I set to work digging holes in the floor with my pickaxe. I also spent some time playing A Game Of Dwarves.

Here’s wot I think.(more…)

The busy game-mines of Paradox have hauled more announcements to the surface. This time it’s the turn of A Game Of Dwarves, which will arrive on the 23rd, and costs $10 to pre-order. And there’s a bonus of sorts: “Every pre-ordered copy of A Game of Dwarves will include access to the Ale Pack DLC, a delectable and delicious add-on that introduces dwarvenkind’s favorite drink to the game and is a must for maintaining happiness in any well-to-do underground fortress.”

I’ve had a little play of this, so there’s some thoughts on that and the trailer below.(more…)

Impire is quite a lot like Dungeon Keeper and it may well be worthy of the comparison. A Game of Dwarves, however, doesn’t have very much in common with Dwarf Fortress, apart from the dwarves and the tunnelling. In fact, it has more in common with Impire but there are huge differences between the two and I reckon it’s all about their personalities.

Paradox has made an unlikely business out of almost exclusively publishing wonderfully off-kilter PC exclusives, but it’s not all sunshine and (Wars of) roses. Stability has never been the Swedish conglomerate’s strongsuit, and games like Sword of the Stars II, King Arthur II, and Magicka have generated an ugly cloud of bugs that swarms around its reputation, slowly but surely devouring goodwill bit-by-bit. But, contrary to how things might appear, Paradox is very, very aware of this. So after a nice, long chat about DLC, senior producer Gordon Van Dyke and I caught up again – both to follow up and to discuss the fairly drastic measures Paradox is taking to squash its bug problem once and for all.

Recently, Paradox descended upon San Francisco with fire and sword, and – in the process – trapped me inside an honest-to-goodness dungeon. Admittedly, it looked a lot like a quaint yet upscale bar/music venue, but I knew the score: each and every journalist there was tethered to a row of diabolical calculation machines, and the loudspeakers crushed our spirits by first blaring Iron Maiden – the music of revolution – and then quickly giving way to Bon Jovi. Eventually, with patience and planning, I escaped. But by then, six hours had passed, and I was a different man. While there, however, I composed a series of letters, unsure if I’d ever see the light of day again.

I worry about dwarves sometimes. While I respect their commitment to digging up all sorts of metals and monsters, I can’t help but wonder if they’re happy or if they turn to drink to kill the pain. Do they have unions? Are there dwarves who live on the surface and lord it over those below? Will there ever be a Thatcher dwarf? A Game of Dwarves may not answer those questions, but it will allow you to explore and exploit randomly generated maps by ordering a gang of the bearded blighters around. Danger, as always, hides in the deep places. A closed beta is set to launch on the 13th of July and you can sign up now for a chance to join it.

Paradox’s latest trailer for A Game Of Dwarves shows us the antagonist in the game – mages! Dastardly wizards, it seems, are responsible for dwarven hardships, and it’ll presumably be the becowled-ones that you’ll be taking on as you carve your kingdoms. The presentation of the backstory as a bedtime story is cute, too. Which sort of sums up this entire “if Bullfrog made dwarf fortress” sort of affair…(more…)

#agameofdwarves A Game of Dwarves is one of the more interesting PC games on my radar at the moment, mostly because it promises to be a little bit Majesty and a little bit Dwarf Fortress. Only a lot easier to play. More »
