Velocity Ultra is bringing its mix of vertical shooting and teleport puzzling to Steam, as well as PS3. The PC port of FuturLab's Vita game is being handled by Curve Studios, the same team working on the PS3 port. According to Curve, the PC version runs at 60 frames per second, and should make for a nice stocking stufffer when it arrives around Christmas time.

FuturLab, meanwhile, is working on PS4 and Vita sequel Velocity 2X, as announced at Sony's Gamescom conference. 2X features top-down shooting and side-scroller platforming, which Futurlab hopes to weave into "one seamless experience."

FuturLab and Curve Digital are delighted to announce that they’re working to bring the critically acclaimed PlayStation Vita title, Velocity Ultra, to PS3 later this year. Brought to you by Curve’s in-house development team, the PS3 version will run at full HD resolutions and retain all the features beloved by fans of the PS Vita version.

Velocity Ultra is a mix of a vertical shooter and puzzle mechanics that fuses elements of traditional spaceship shooters with a clever teleportation mechanic. It’s all about speed, quick reflexes, and fast decisions, set to a pumping electronic soundtrack.

The PS3 version of Velocity Ultra will share its Trophies and leaderboards with the PS Vita version, so fans will be able to pick it up in glossy HD and start chasing new highscores right away.

A Leap Beyond

Hi everyone, we are so excited and proud to announce Velocity 2X; the highly requested sequel to Velocity Ultra!

Story Teaser

Gameplay Teaser (Pre-Alpha Footage)

This video shows pre-alpha gameplay footage, which means it’s nowhere near what we’re aiming for visually. In fact, our technical director Hussain Sheikh was the lead visual effects programmer on Split/Second, so you can trust that he and the art team won’t stop until Velocity 2X looks spectacular.

What the dock?!

When PlayStation asked if we’d like Velocity 2X announced during its Gamescom press conference, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. But the game just isn’t ready for a full reveal yet, so we’ve only let you glimpse the platforming gameplay. You can rest assured that the game features great mechanics that bridge the two formats perfectly; this isn’t just Velocity with a platformer bolted on, it’s a new game designed to use two gameplay formats. You won’t have to wait long for the full reveal – we’ll be at the Eurogamer Expo in September!

In the meantime, sign up to the Velocity website for updates and then read some more info below…

What’s new, then?

Weaving together two classic game formats into one seamless experience, Velocity 2X features platforming action alongside the award-winning top-down shoot ‘em-up gameplay! We can’t reveal everything yet, but we can confirm the following:

Gameplay

  • Dual format gameplay:
    • Top-down shoot ‘em-up
    • Side-scrolling platformer

Dual format bosses =) Speed boost pads Special weapon attacks

Graphics & Tech

  • 960×544 native on PS Vita
  • 1080p on PS4
  • 60fps on PS4 and PS Vita
  • 3D camera zoom
  • Dynamic lighting
  • Particle system
  • Post processing VFX
  • Multiple layers of parallax

Velocity 2X is a huge step up from Velocity Ultra. We threw out the old code and started again from scratch targeting next generation hardware. We hired AAA engine and visual effects programmers to bring a highly polished modern feel to a classic genre, and we’ve pushed our house art style to the next level.

Music

Joris de Man is back on board to provide audio and music, and whereas Velocity Ultra had a handful of music tracks, Velocity 2X features a full soundtrack. It’s a leap forward in production value whilst keeping one foot firmly in our retro roots.

Just turn the volume up and listen to the story teaser above to hear exactly what we mean.

Story

Velocity 2X features a much richer story, and whilst we can’t reveal much about it yet, you can get a taste from the Apex Predator prologue below…

Apex Predator Prologue

“Now I remember.

“As the ship hull screeched and ruptured under ferocious pressure, I watched in detached wonder as automated cabling tore into my wrist and snaked inside my arm.

“Overstressed medical tech must have fought to keep me alive, desperate for raw materials, and did the only thing it could – it fused us together.

“The ship had me on direct life support, feeding oxygen into my veins, recycling my blood. The ship and I were united for the journey, but now someone has crudely separated us.

“Do they mean to heal me, or finish what they started? I should be horrified by what has happened to me but I’m strangely calm, and I have hope to cling to.”
