With just hours to go until PS4’s debut in North America, it’s time to take a closer look at PS4’s new UI — it’s a slick little piece of work dubbed the Connected User Experience. Sony Network Entertainment Vice President Eric Lempel gave me a full tour, showing off PlayStation Store’s speedy response time (even mid-game), live game broadcasting via Twitch and UStream, and social feeds that show what your friends are buying and watching. But that’s just a start: Check out Eric’s video tour below.

Another new feature worth calling out is Play As You Download, which enables PlayStation Store users to start playing supported games after downloading a portion of the game’s data, leaving the rest of the game to download in the background.

With PS4 debuting nationwide tonight, many of you will have a chance to get plenty of hands-on time. Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments!

We have entered a two-week maelstrom of “next-gen” (heh) console-mania, and after only a few days, I am fully prepared to give it RPS’ official Golden Hangnail Of Extreme Dedication To Tireless Tedium. Two eerily similar hyper-proprietary boxes that everyone can’t stop arguing over for incredibly petty, inconsequential reasons? Gee, we’ve never been here before. But hey, on the upside, this increasingly spotty, irrelevant console launch also gives us a chance to be thankful for PC gaming’s bounteous wonderments. For example, we’ve got The Future – aka, Oculus Rift – in our corner, and it’s not going anywhere any time soon.

Look for this sign and line up behind it. Remember: Only credit cards will be accepted, don’t bring cash.

Hey PlayStation fans. If you were unable to preorder a PS4 system, we are happy to announce that we are making 444 additional units available for sale at The Standard, High Line hotel in New York City (848 Washington St) at midnight on November 15th. Lines will start immediately at Washington and Little West 12th, so don’t wait. Only credit cards will be accepted — don’t bring cash!

To celebrate the launch of PS4 in North America, we will be holding a special midnight launch event at The Standard, High Line. Activities will include an arcade where fans can play games on up to 30 kiosks. Additionally, the entire north side and east sides of the hotel will transform into a gigantic interactive lighting installation. Starting Thursday, images depicting the creative process of developing video games will be projected on the entire north side of the 18-story building.

There will also be surprise ad-hoc PS4 games popping up all around The Standard, complete with the actual developer and producers playing their titles. The games will be projected on walls and other non-traditional locations, and fans will have the opportunity to meet and possibly play with industry luminaries. Who? We’re not saying just yet!

Additionally, a large art installation in the central plaza will showcase interactive content and real-time art jams. All activities will culminate with the live Spike TV broadcast at 11:00pm Eastern Time and the sale of the first PS4 at midnight. Come on down and check out the festivities, or tune in to the PS4 ALL Access: Greatness Awaits special on Spike. November 15th is almost here — let the gaming begin!

Hard to believe, but PlayStation 4’s North American launch is mere days away. We’re tremendously excited for everyone to pick up the system starting Nov. 15 and help usher in the next generation of gaming. If you want to be among the first to pick up a PS4 – and if you are reading the PlayStation Blog, it’s a safe bet that you do – retailers across the country will be open when the clock strikes midnight on Nov. 15. Check out the information below to find a store nearest you.

In addition, we are doing something extra special for the PS4 launch in our home turf of San Francisco. We’ll be at the GameStop on 830 Market Street near San Francisco’s Union Square in full force with a midnight launch event.

We have fun activities planned for attendees, including contests for the chance to win PS4’s, PS Vita’s, games, and more. You’re invited to show your PS pride and come dressed up as your favorite character, whether that’s Nathan Drake, Sweet Tooth, Kratos, or even Knack (good luck with that costume!).

Spike TV will also broadcast from the San Francisco event as part of our live PS4 All Access: Greatness Awaits launch event. The show starts in New York City on November 14th at 11:00pm Eastern Time/Pacific Time on regular cable providers and 11pm Eastern Time/8pm Pacific Time on DirecTV and streaming.

Here’s how to find a PS4 at midnight in your hometown:

  • Best Buy – Many Best Buy stores around the country will have midnight PS4 events. Visit their Midnight Store Openings page to find one nearest you.
  • GameStop – All eligible GameStop stores will remain open the evening of November 14 for the midnight release of PS4. For a complete listing of all U.S. GameStop store locations, visit www.gamestop.com.

  • Sony Store – Sony Stores will hold PS4 midnight events at locations across the country. Visit their store locator to find your nearest store, and call to ask whether they are holding a PS4 midnight event.
