You're supposed to be able to stay connected and absorb at least a few bullets during the online frenzy of a Battlefield 4 multiplayer battle. But persistent bugs on the PS4 have made crashes, one-hit kills and general instability rampant problems in EA's flagship shooter and it looks like the wait for a fix will continue for a while longer.Read more...

In light of the recent livestream antics on Playroom, the PlayStation 4 augmented-reality game set in players' living room, Twitch.tv has felt compelled to restate its terms of use, which in effect forbids "non-gaming content." PS4’s North American launch heralds the dawn of a new gaming generation, and today we’re upping the ante with an interactive event called First to Greatness. Using DualShock 4’s Share button, you’ll capture and upload videos of your conquests across 64 challenges detailed on the First to Greatness site (see the full list here). The challenges are spread across a who’s who of PS4 launch titles including Killzone: Shadow Fall, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, NBA 2K14, and Knack.

Of course, the first player to complete each challenge will earn a spot in PS4 history and some killer bragging rights. But even if you’re not the first to complete a particular challenge, the site will serve as a handy archive of your greatest PS4 accomlishments. Once you’ve completed a challenge and uploaded the video to your Facebook account using DualShock 4’s Share button, submit it to FirstToGreatness.com by signing in with Facebook. Many of your “firsts” will be featured soon in a special remake of PlayStation’s recent “Perfect Day” TV spot. Once a total of 64 “firsts” are achieved within the PlayStation community, the site will unlock a cool new experience — but we’ll leave it to you to discover.

Who will be the First to Greatness?

Editor’s note: We’ll be streaming PS4 games regularly over on the PlayStation Twitch channel — tune in!

It’s been less than a week since PS4 launched with Twitch broadcasting functionality, and the feedback we’ve been getting from new broadcasters has been phenomenal! To help new streamers ease into the Twitch community – which is already 45 million members strong – here are some tips for first-time broadcasters:

  • Be a curator of conversations: Drive conversation with your viewers. Talk about everything and don’t just focus your conversation about the game or games in general. Talk about life, pop culture, music and everything in between.
  • Go live longer than an hour: It might sound shocking at first, but Twitch is long-form entertainment. Our broadcasters stream for hours, so find a sweet spot and before you know it you’ll be rocking a 24-hour broadcast in celebration of a new game release.
  • Find a genre: When laying the foundation for your channel, don’t feel the need to be the best at every game. However, if you are good at one genre (FPS, Platforming, Stealth…), focus on that until you get the swing for engaging between chat and gaming at the same time. It can be a challenge to be good at both, but hang in there — you’ll eventually kick off those training wheels.
  • Have a regular broadcast schedule: This way your viewers can become aware of when a broadcast will happen. You want to post this schedule everywhere you can. The more informed the community is with your shows, the more people will show up.
  • Try to have a camera and mic on: People want to see and hear you! There’s something very special about having a broadcaster looking right at the camera and talking directly to viewers, live. Plus, this will increase your viewership.
  • Engage in the Twitch Universe: Broadcasting is built around community, whether it’s your community or someone else’s, so join other channels that you share a common interest in. This will give you crossover viewership.
  • Authentic voice is essential: Go out there have fun! The more authentic your approach is, the more your viewers will connect with you.

I hope these tips will help get you started on your new broadcasting journey! To see all the PS4 content on Twitch, visit our PS4 directory. You can also rock a shirt from our new store, with all proceeds going to relief efforts surrounding Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The PlayStation 4 costs $381 for Sony to build, $18 under its retail price of $399. The figure comes from a hardware teardown by research firm IHS that included the bill of materials, which amounts to $372, as well as per-unit cost of assembly in the assessment. The teardown notes that the system's processor and memory account for about half of the cost of the entire console at $188, and that the PS4's 500 GB hard drive is $1 cheaper than the 120 GB one found in the PS3, thanks to the "major decline in HDD costs during the past four years."

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said in August that the system "will not generate anything like the losses we did for the PlayStation 3," which amounted to $3.5 billion in 2007 and 2008, after the PS3 launched in November 2006 for $599. IHS' teardown of the PS3 at the time found that the system cost Sony $805, and the company still lost roughly $40 per system as of December 2009.

The PS4 is off to a good start, as Sony sold one million units in the console's first day at retail. Sony addressed a few issues with launch systems, estimating that the number of problematic PS4 consoles is less than one percent of those shipped.
