Coming from Sucker Punch cofounder Chris Zimmerman ...

"The original idea for Infamous, believe it or not, was that it was kind of Animal Crossing, but you were a super hero. We worked on that for about a year in that direction. So much more stylized, much more cartoony than what you end up seeing. We worked hard to see if we could make that work."

A portion of a Nintendo Life review...

Rather than purchasing this game, why not have a pal kick you in the face for free instead? You'll receive just as much enjoyment and you can almost guarantee that, at least, the blow will land.

Coming from Hideo Kojima, as pertaining to the gaming scene in Japan...

- era of buying a game and spending a huge amount of time with it is no longer the norm
- most gamers there have moved over to mobile and portable games
- these games are easier to pick up and are more user-friendly
- they can also be completed quicker

Two points of clarification, as there seems to be misinformation: The game runs at 60FPS on both screens simultaneously (1/2)

And secondly, Endless Special ALSO features a double jump. The only mode without a double jump is Classic. (2/2) #igtr

Coming from Microsoft's Phil Spencer...

"There seems to be this natural faction that gets created around what console you own, and then this, I would call it unhealthy dislike, for people who own the other console. In the end, what we all want to do is to take this art form of playing games and experiencing and breaking down that wall between a linear narrative and an interactive capability, and just make a better form of entertainment.

I love the fans that we have, but I don't think being a fan of Xbox does not mean you can't be a fan of something else, or you have to be an anti-fan of some other brand. At least I'm not. I own a PlayStation 4, I play games on a PlayStation 4. I own a Wii U, I play games on my Wii U. I learn a ton from what happens on those other platforms."

- Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons director Josef Faras is working on a new project, but it isn't with developer Starbreeze. Speaking to Digital Spy during a roundtable interview, Faras said, "I can tell you this: If I tell you the idea now, you'd say, 'I haven't played something like this before.' I can't tell you more. But definitely something that hasn't been done before."

Faras was speaking at last night's BAFTA awards in London, where Brothers won the gong for Best Innovation. We also caught up with the Lebanon-born director and asked when he came up with mapping control of one brother to the left analogue stick, and the other brother to the right one - an idea that probably contributed to Brothers winning its award.

"It was the first day," Faras told Joystiq. "I had to fight so hard to make this game happen. So the first time I got the chance to make a demo, actually I was sat at my motel room and I came up with the concept and the actual story. I mean everything, how it starts, how it ends, how you control, that was all from day 1. Of course it changed during development, but trying to convince all the studios that this was gonna be awesome...

"I'm quite known in Sweden for making movies, so people were like, 'You're a movie maker, you don't know anything about games.' But eventually I convinced them. I've worked on this game two years, it's been a real passion project for me."

We're glad he convinced them, too: The PS3, Xbox 360, and PC game scored third place in our Best of 2013 awards, with Mike Suzsek calling its emotional adventure "a true rarity, as it places the gravity of its compact story right in your hands." [Image: Starbreeze Studios]

The guy recording racist and sexist crap in online multiplayer matches know he's going to stop doing it soon. "I really only play one game these days; [Call of Duty:]Ghosts on Xbox Live," he says. But, while he's still playing, the man behind The Bigot Gamer says he's still going to expose the toxic behavior of others, whether they like it or not. Read more...

Plants vs Zombies and Peggle developer PopCap suffered layoffs today, EA confirmed. The news follows a reorganization at the studio in late February, which saw the developer split into a two teams, one geared towards mobile games and the other for console releases. PopCap CEO David Roberts also stepped down and was replaced by co-founder John Vechey in January.

"The changes we made today at PopCap were painful and we're sorry to lose some of our friends and colleagues," EA wrote in an email to Joystiq. "But it was also necessary in order to stay on course with our future plans for mobile games, live services, and new IP. PopCap is a studio that made its name building great games that the world can fall in love with, and that's what we'll continue to do."

PopCap's latest game is Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, which was good enough to earn a four-star review from Joystiq. The number of employees affected by the layoffs is unknown at this time. [Image: PopCap]

Yes, we’ve done the Nvidia Maxwell graphics thing already. As a desktop GPU, the new GeForce GTXs 750 and 750 Ti aren’t all that exciting. But the same Nvidia GM107 chip rebadged Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M and stuffed into a laptop? Suddenly, things get a whole lot more interesting. The specifics aren’t official yet. But it looks like GM107 might just deliver twice the performance for the same power budget as its predecessor and that’s pretty exciting for thin-and-light gaming lappies. And remember, this is just the beginning for Maxwell – the arrival of second-gen 20nm Maxwell mobile GPUs could be spectacular. While we’re here, I thought a beginners guide to mobile GPUs would be useful for some of you. What with all the branding shenanigans both Nvidia and AMD get up to in the mobile space, keeping track of what’s actually on offer isn’t always easy. … [visit site to read more]

Speaking to Joystiq, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima said that around the time Grand Theft Auto 3 was released, he and his team tried to create "something similar" to its open-world design. Kojima didn't note to what extent that something similar was worked on, nor which project it was for, but he did say it wasn't up to the standard of Rockstar's crime sim.

The Japanese veteran designer presented GTA creators the Houser brothers with lifetime achievement awards at last night's BAFTA ceremony in London. Kojima has previously spoken about being influenced by the vastness of GTA 3, telling EGM back in 2012 the game "definitely opened his eyes." After the awards show, we asked him if the GTA games had inspired the open-world design of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.

"When GTA 3 came out, we were on Metal Gear Solid 2," Kojima said, speaking through a translator. "At that point we tried to create something similar and we were completely unable to come up with this design to [a level of] similar success. Actually, around then I had with dinner with Dan Houser who I just saw [tonight] for the first time after ten years. To be honest, looking at their [Rockstar's] success at doing what we tried to do and failed, we went back and made the game engine [and] we first tried to ensure the freedom the player would have. So more than being inspired by them, to be honest they just went ahead of us, they were more successful than what we were trying to create back then.

"Now, game-wise what we are trying to create [in Ground Zeroes] is something probably different than they are trying to create. We're trying to ensure the freedom so the player can do some more realistic stealth infiltration by having all this freedom. So I believe we're creating different games."

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is the first game in the stealth series to feature an open world, and Big Bosses worldwide get to explore it in a few days' time. The game hits North America on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PS3 on March 18, and then Europe on March 20. [Image: BAFTA]

More than fantasy tropes, gloomy yet attractive graphics or an overarching sense of despair, the hallmark of Dark Souls 2 is repeated, oft-frustrating character death, so it just makes sense to have a website keeping track of all of this suffering.

Officially dubbed the "Dark Souls 2 Player's Site," the webpage is less a celebration of player triumphs and more a monument to their endless willingness to throw themselves against the same foes that killed them moments before. As of now, two days after Dark Souls 2 made its retail debut, the Xbox 360 side of the site claims 1,311,973 total deaths, while the PlayStation 3 side reports 2,991,976.

While these numbers are probably not entirely accurate - it seems unlikely that 1,657 Xbox 360 players have finished the game while a mere three PlayStation 3 owners have done the same - the site's functionality should improve as the game's post-launch hiccups subside. In the meantime, try to figure out what the rest of the site means. Those scales are self-explanatory, but the red and white candles remain a waxy enigma. [Image: Bandai Namco]

Here’s a novel puzzle game, with a deeply peculiar name. Dynetzzlle – seemingly crafted in a special laboratory to be the most forgettable, irrelevant, and impossible to remember how to spell game name of all time – is based around unfolded dice. Nets of cubes, combined with the magical fact that all opposite sides of a dice add up to 7. Combine those two elements, and you get a rather nice idea for a little puzzle game. One that is, apparently, soon to become a bigger puzzle game. But you can play the 10-level version for free, right now.
