Uh oh! Baby Luigi’s been kidnapped and only Yoshi can save the day! Grab Baby Mario and head out for a new escapade, where you’ll gobble up bad guys, toss egg missiles, solve puzzles, and uncover tons of secrets. Welcome to Yoshi’s New Island, available in shops and as a downloadable version from Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS.

In a bold move, Yoshi sets out to rescue Baby Luigi from Kamek’s mischievous clutches. There’s a whole new island to discover and a bunch of baddies to face, from Little Mousers to Piranha Plants, all of whom will try to knock Baby Mario off Yoshi’s back. It's up to you to keep the little 'un safe!

Yoshi turns the tables by swallowing enemies and spitting them out as egg ammo to knock out bad guys and uncover secrets! Create Mega Eggdozers from big baddies to smash through obstacles, and make sure you take time to seek out the stacks of collectables scattered round the island.

It doesn’t stop there: zip through a set of Whirly Gates, and Yoshi will transform into a helicopter, jackhammer, bobsleigh, and many more – which you can use motion controls to steer! As a reward for all the hard work, you can unlock two-player, co-operative minigames – connect with a friend through Local Play or Download Play and prove you’re the best Yoshi a Yoshi can be!

Also launching today is the Yoshi Special Edition Nintendo 3DS XL*: a gorgeous green and white system that features Yoshi with an egg on the front and a trail of eggs that continues onto the back! This unique system is also available in a Yoshi Special Edition Bundle from the Nintendo UK Online Store, which includes the Special Edition Yoshi Nintendo 3DS XL, a copy of Yoshi’s New Island and a Nintendo 3DS AC Adapter to boot.

Ready for adventure? Want to leave Kamek with egg on his face? Take a tour of all the egg-citing egg-sploits that await you by visiting our official Yoshi’s New Island website.

Yoshi’s New Island is available now, both in shops and as a downloadable version from Nintendo eShop, only on Nintendo 3DS.

*Please note: the Yoshi Special Edition Nintendo 3DS XL does not include the Yoshi's New Island game for Nintendo 3DS family systems.

Road Not Taken: Hand-crafted Randomness

In previous blog posts, we’ve talked about the procedural system we use to create the enchanted forests that serve as your proving ground in Road Not Taken. This system is what makes Road Not Taken a fun game to play repeatedly, and — as with any good roguelike — you’ll need to play Road Not Taken many times before you’ve stumbled upon every interesting object and creature lurking in the forest.

13150085384_61b3bab7c0_z.jpg

But a purely random system, even a very rich one, can start to feel repetitive over time. Every snowflake might be unique, but after you’ve looked at a thousand snowflakes it’s easy to stop appreciating them!

Our roguelike developer ancestors have invented a few solutions to this problem, one of which is to change the look and feel of the environment to signal when something new/important/dangerous is happening.Sewers transition into dungeons, dungeons become underground caverns, etc. And in Road Not Taken, peaceful glades might lead to blizzard-ravaged woods, haunted groves, and dangerous ice caverns! The changing terrain is both a marker of your progress as well as a warning of new challenges to come.

13150084244_1700483bd9_z.jpg

Another classic component of roguelikes (and other procedurally-generated games) is the hand-crafted encounter and setpiece. These uncommon encounters stick out like a sore thumb precisely because they’re not 100% randomly generated. They’re specialized, memorable moments that punctuate the gameplay experience. The Chess Biome in Don’t Starve is an example of a setpiece. The major boss encounters in Diablo are another example.

In Road Not Taken, pretty much all of the setpieces that we’ve recently created are hand-crafted puzzles that demand careful planning if you want to solve them efficiently (And remember, in this game, inefficiency equals death!) They aren’t completely non-random puzzles, since that would limit their replay value, but they’re non-random enough to be very distinctive.

13149806855_90736edd52_z.jpg

We’re hoping to launch with a healthy variety of these setpieces. Some might have that good-old “boss encounter” feeling to them. And more often than not, those bosses won’t just be coming after you — they’ll be hunting the children you’re sworn to rescue. Protecting others from harm can often feel more intense than just trying to save yourself.

spideries.gif

We’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about and testing new setpiece ideas over the past couple weeks. It’s been a lot of fun, and we have way more ideas than we’ll ever have time to implement! But even so, it’s worth noting that all of this stuff is just icing on our procedurally-generated cake. The hand-crafted content won’t be the defining feature of your many journeys through Road Not Taken… but we really hope it’ll provide some memorable moments along the way.

“We are about to reveal a new game!” No Time To Explain dev/burgeoning indie publisher Alex Nichiporchik told me over Skype. Almost reflexively, I braced myself for an excited slurry spew about some crazy new platformer or a zany comedy adventure or an emotional tale that would rock me to my very core. “It’s basically a fusion of Just Cause 2 and Battlefield 3,” he proceeded to tell me. “…Oh,” I replied, briefly mistaking a flock of birds fluttering by outside for a car tethered to a plane with a wildman surfing atop it, as I often do. “Go on.” And so he did. Go below to find out about JetGetters‘ plane-jacking antics, its accompanying Kickstarter (because of course), how TinyBuild hopes to make dogfights more interesting, shifting levels, purposefully limited player counts, and why TinyBuild’s not on board with free-to-play.

Joystiq Tiny Streams: Returning to the nasty roots of Dark Souls

Three years is plenty of time to heal most wounds, but Dark Souls cuts deep. With Dark Souls 2 finally in our hands, our memories loom large. Was the first Souls joint from Bandai Namco and From Software really that demanding? Did it really punish us so much that difficulty defined it in our minds? Have our skills dulled in the months since? Joystiq's Sinan Kubba, in preparation for his review of Dark Souls 2, waded back into those murky waters and found that his experiences had stuck with him. As evidenced by this Tiny Stream, Sinan's senses are still keenly attuned to Souls' mean tricks. Even when he's prepared, though, the game still manages to get in some licks. [Images: Bandai Namco]

Co-star in Tales of Tales' first-person exploration, Sunset

The Path developer Tale of Tales' next adventure is called Sunset, and it's due to launch in 2015 on PC, Mac and Linux. Described as a first-person exploration game, Sunset is set in a "fictional tropical republic suffering under an oppressive regime" in the early 1970s.

In it, players control the housekeeper of a secluded, former philanthropist, and awaken "a new love for his country and his people" in the troubled occupant. The housekeeper investigates the man's belongings and learns of his role in the civil war, strengthening or weakening their relationship along the way. Tale of Tales founders Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn liken Sunset to "a shooter game where you are not the hero but one of the people in the background."

While deemed the second largest project by Tale of Tales, the game is being developed by Harvey and Samyn, sound designer Kris Force, is penned by an anonymous author and will receive music from Journey composer Austin Wintory. "The game contains both empathy and apathy. But also a feeling of being caught up in a struggle bigger than your day to day life," the founders added in the announcement. [Image: Tale of Tales]

British indie Dan “Tsukasa” Elvins has launched a Kickstarter for “a 2D hand painted, physics based Platformer set in Japans Genroku Period”. What that means is he’s creating a deeply pretty side-scroller called Kodama. The game features a vegetable protagonist, who has to balance water and sunlight uptake in the way in which he deals with puzzles, as well as respecting Shinto customs. Elvins asks: “Have you ever wanted to relax with a Kappa or play drums with a Tanuki?” Well, I actually haven’t, but I know a few Japanophiles who would. See more of the pitch below.

Phoenix Wright creator objected to sequels after Ace Attorney 3

Shu Takumi is not one to pump out game after game in a series just because it's popular. After finishing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials & Tribulations, or Gyakuten Saiban 3 for purists, Takumi firmly told Capcom, "Hold it!"

"I felt that Phoenix's story had been told, and that the series should not continue", Takumi told Official Nintendo Magazine in a recent interview. "Knowing when to end a story is very important and I wanted to avoid dragging it out and having it become a shadow of its former self."

Trials and Tribulations provided a nice cap on the story of Phoenix Wright, a young lawyer with a penchant for bluffing his way into proving clients' innocence, that started on the Game Boy Advance in 2001. That's why when Capcom decided it would push the series forward with or without Takumi, the designer came up with a new ace attorney.
