Many a cold night they spent together on the hunt for the beast, scanning the seas from watchtowers, wading in the surf, riding the waves, and diving down to the dark ocean’s wrecks. Days turned to weeks, and weeks to months. They’d never seen it, but they know it was there. Each secret uncovered brought them closer to the beast. They felt it in their bones. And then… it was upon them. They were snuffed out in an instant.

After many moons of searching, dedicated Battlefield 4 players have finally found a long-rumoured secret: a megalodon. Lurking in the seas of the multiplayer map Paracel Storm, the prehistoric mega-shark will rise and breach to devour the bold and foolish.

DICE isn't keeping PC marines on standby for the latest Battlefield 4 content as long as expected. The delayed "Naval Strike" DLC was projected to hit PC sometime in early April, but the studio announced it's rolling out on the platform today for the shooter's Premium members. DICE originally delayed the content because it was concerned about potential performance issues on mid-to-high-end PCs.

Naval Strike introduces new maps, weapons, gadgets and assignments to Battlefield 4, as well as a hovercraft vehicle and a brand new Village People rhythm mini-game. Okay, we made that last one up, but it really does introduce a new Carrier Assault mode in which teams do battle and try to sink each other's aircraft carriers. [Image: EA]

Starting today, PlayStation owners who are Battlefield 4 Premium members can experience the ultimate sea-to-sea warfare on PS3 and PS4. Battlefield 4 Naval Strike, the third expansion pack, takes the intense and dramatic water-based combat introduced in Battlefield 4 to four all-new maps set in the South China Sea.

  • Lost Islands: Blow open a crashed passenger plane and capture fishing villages across these tropical islands.
  • Wave Breaker: Drop a submarine on your foes as you infiltrate a naval base or rush between shipping docks and rocky islands on this massive map.
  • Nansha Strike: Wage war across stormy seas in the largest ocean stretch in a Battlefield map yet.
  • Operation Mortar: Storm an abandoned cliff-side resort, or get lost in the breathtaking vistas in this map.

Battlefield 4 Naval Strike also lets you re-live the classic Titan Mode of Battlefield 2142, with the new Carrier Assault game mode. Your objective is to destroy the enemy team’s carrier before they infiltrate and destroy yours. You start out fighting a big-scale war with sea, land, and air vehicles controlling the map, and then everything evolves into an infantry-focused, close-quarters fight inside both carriers at the same time! Lean more about Carrier Assault in this blog post on Battlefield.com.

Water-based combat has always been a vital part of the all-out war in Battlefield, and with the introduction of the amphibious hovercraft vehicle, your possibilities to dominate the sea will be even greater. Additionally, you can wreak havoc with five new weapons, two additional gadgets, and ten assignments.

Battlefield 4 Naval Strike will be available starting April 8th for non-Premium members. We hope you’ll enjoy the new maps immensely, whether you’re trying out the new Carrier Assault mode or piloting the new hovercraft.

“We are about to reveal a new game!” No Time To Explain dev/burgeoning indie publisher Alex Nichiporchik told me over Skype. Almost reflexively, I braced myself for an excited slurry spew about some crazy new platformer or a zany comedy adventure or an emotional tale that would rock me to my very core. “It’s basically a fusion of Just Cause 2 and Battlefield 3,” he proceeded to tell me. “…Oh,” I replied, briefly mistaking a flock of birds fluttering by outside for a car tethered to a plane with a wildman surfing atop it, as I often do. “Go on.” And so he did. Go below to find out about JetGetters‘ plane-jacking antics, its accompanying Kickstarter (because of course), how TinyBuild hopes to make dogfights more interesting, shifting levels, purposefully limited player counts, and why TinyBuild’s not on board with free-to-play.

I haven’t played one second of Battlefield 4 (is it still all kinds of broken?), because I was taking a personal stand against Dice and EA’s refusal to acknowledge how awesome Battlefield 2142 was. Specifically Titan Mode, where each side had a hovering carrier that could be boarded by launching yourself at it in your own personal missile. It was all fashooomgrawwwwwgnargle *headshot*, and it was the best thing Battlefield ever did do. Well, there’s some good news if you’ve been part of my protest: the upcoming Naval Strike map pack (ugh!) will be paying homage to Titan Mode with Carrier Assault mode, though there’s no mention of the personal missiles that made that mode so much fun. … [visit site to read more]

Confirming a rumor from earlier this week, developer DICE has announced that the Second Assault DLC for large-scale military shooter Battlefield 4 will debut on February 18.

"In a week, you'll take a step back in time with Battlefield 4 Second Assault, featuring four fan-favorite maps from Battlefield 3 - Operation Metro, Caspian Border, Gulf of Oman, and Operation Firestorm," a DICE representative wrote on the official Battlefield 4 blog. "Reimagined with Frostbite 3 graphics and Battlefield 4 gameplay, Battlefield 4 Second Assault will be released on February 18 for Battlefield 4 Premium members on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, and for all Battlefield 4 players two weeks later on March 4."

As Second Assault has been available to Xbox One users since Battlefield 4 launched on that console, there isn't anything left to reveal about the DLC. Instead, the remainder of today's announcement is focused on the game's next addition, dubbed Naval Strike. "In this expansion, you'll experience intense water-based combat as the Chinese armada takes the fight to the sea. You'll have access to new weapons, gadgets, and amphibious vehicles, and four all-new maps - Lost Island, Nansha Strike, Wave Breaker, and Operation Mortar." DICE has yet to reveal a release date for Naval Strike.

I recently attended the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas (which is not related to game developer DICE, actually), and there I interviewed the entire gaming industry. OK, that’s not entirely true, largely because many D.I.C.E. attendees spontaneously break out into hives if anybody so much as mentions the word “indie.” But still, I talked to a whole mess of people. I encountered EA chief creative officer Rich Hilleman on an award show red carpet, so time for chit-chat was brief. Given recent events, however, I had to ask: what’s the deal with EA and hideously botched launches on games like Battlefield 4 and SimCity? And while Hilleman (very vaguely) promised change, I found his response more than a little upsetting. Read on and see what you think.

It seems you’re not the only ones who don’t love EA. Law firm Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP are pursuing action against the company for claims that Electronic Arts withheld information about the state of Battlefield 4 in order to artificially increase their share price. Now that the game is out, buggy and struggling commercially, Electronic Arts’ share price has dipped. That makes investors not so happy also lawyers quite happy.

As reported by Games Informer, the complaint, “alleges that during the Class Period, defendants issued materially false and misleading statements highlighting the purported strength of the Company’s rollout of version 4 of its all-important Battlefield video game series, which had provided approximately 11% of its revenues in fiscal 2012.”

They get more specific in their complaints, including that “Battlefield 4 was riddled with bugs and multiple other problems, including downloadable content that allowed players access to more levels of the game, a myriad of connectivity issues, server limitations, lost data and repeated sudden crashes, among other things.” Which makes it sound as if they’re listing the mere presence of downloadable content as a problem in itself.

Currently the law firm are looking for a lead plaintiff, to represent the group who purchased stock between July 24, 2013 and December 4, 2013.

An EA representative has told Game Informer that the company “believe these claims are meritless” and that they “intend to aggressively defend ourselves, and we’re confident the court will dismiss the complaint in due course.”

I have no idea whether the claims have merit or not, but players of Battlefield 4 are certainly having a tough time since the game’s launch. As did John, when he tried to play it. DICE have reportedly dropped everything to focus on just fixing its many glitches and server issues. That’s all a separate issue from whether EA misled shareholders however, as gratifying as it might be for disgruntled players to see lawyers take EA to task for Battlefield 4 being “riddled with bugs.”

This might be the start of a larger spell of trouble for EA, as another class action lawsuit firm Holzer Holzer & Fistel was reported last week to be investigating a similar suit against the company. Although the whole thing looks a little like sharks have tasted a little blood in the water, and are circling in the interest of more meat, rather than any sense of correcting injustice.

Lawyers are either snipers or sharks, is what I’m saying. Sniper sharks.

In its ongoing quest to stamp out the bugs that plague Battlefield 4, developer DICE has launched a new update for the game - actually, make that three updates: one for PlayStation 3, one for PlayStation 4 and one for the Xbox 360.

Battlelog offers extensive explanations for each patch, so we'll cover the highlights. The PlayStation 3 game should now crash less frequently as well as allow players to more easily connect to online games. This patch also goes a long ways toward snuffing players' ability to trade kills and thus artificially pad their stats, though DICE continues to work on a permanent solution to this problem.

The Xbox 360 game is likewise receiving stability improvements, both online and off. It, too, is seeing a fix for the kill-trading issue, though perhaps more crucially, it also squashes multiple bugs that could leave a player stranded at the respawn screen after attempting to return to battle.

Unsurprisingly, stability improvements are directly cited in the PlayStation 4 patch, along with a number of fixes now said to be in place to prevent more common crashing scenarios. Kill trading has been fixed here too, though more notably the patch is also said to remove the periodic audio drops players experience from time to time.

These patches follow hot on the heels of an Xbox One patch designed to fix many of the same issues outlined today. All of these updates are free of charge, and should be downloaded to your game the next time you fire up your console of choice.
