I’m somewhat glad this interview with Chris Cornell of Paper Dino, creators of multiple choice romance/fatality adventure Save The Date, is happening remotely. Frankly, if we were doing it over drinks or lunch, I’d fear for my life. If you’ve yet to play Save The Date a) you should, because it’s funny, thoughtful and surprising, and free and b) the preceding sentence will make a lot more sense if you do.

Save The Date’s nominated for the Nuovo award at this year’s Independent Games Festival. Here, I talk to Cornell about burgers, breaking the fourth wall, player habits and the IGF. … [visit site to read more]

Greetings, doods! I don’t know about you, but after a long week at the office, I feel like a vacation’s in order. I’m thinking someplace exotic that will wake me up from the daily grind, and I know just the place! I’d like to introduce you to the warm and hospitable dungeon-crawling RPG world of Demon Gaze, which will be available for PS Vita on April 22nd. Mystery, dungeons, monsters, and demons… this place has it all for you adventurin’ weekend-warrior types. So come along with me and let’s take a grand tour of the world of Demon Gaze.

Demon Gaze takes place in the land of Misrid, which has terrain for every adventurer. There are ancient cities (That are on fire!) for history buffs, woodsy mazes for those who pack homemade granola in their hemp-woven satchels, and even haunted burial grounds for travelers looking for a little morbid fun.

You’ll get to experience all these lands in the classic, first-person dungeon-crawling style — slashing your way through mazes and getting up close and personal with the local wildlife by engaging in bloody, turn-based battle. Navigation’s a breeze when you can plot your course through these dangerous dungeons using your Vita touchscreen, and if you’ve already explored the area you can just employ the Auto-Move feature and kick back while you walk through the dungeon like the expert you are!

13130102924_5af96c358f_n.jpg13130103444_7f48b12e34_n.jpg

If hordes of monsters weren’t enough to draw you in, what if I told you that all of these lands were ruled by demons? It may sound a bit daunting, but you should know that when you enter this world, you’ve entered it as a Demon Gazer. What does that mean? It means you’ve got a really cool-looking, glowing eyeball that’s got the ability to suck up demons. Demons will usually be a little enraged with you when you first approach, but if you throw down using all your equipment and special skills, you’ll be able to defeat them and return them to a more compliant form.

Playing all your cards right, you can get these demons to join you in your travels and help out in their own special way. You’ll meet Mars, the Fire Dragon Woman, who boosts your party’s strength in battle; Comet, the Starry Magic Girl, who’s an expert in navigating mazes and finding items; and plenty of other demons! Having all these demons on your side is like having an all-access pass to the coolest spots in Misrid.

Speaking of cool spots, when you want to get away from all the dungeon-crawling and demons, you can go to the Dragon Princess Inn, where you’ll get to know the zany locals, and maybe even get to know a little more about yourself and your past. But what’s really great about this place is you’ll meet adventurers from all walks of life, and you can recruit them to join you in your dungeon-crawling travels.

13129935253_37724a227e_z.jpg

All sorts of classes — including Assassins, Wizards, Paladins, and Samurai — are eager to help you fight, and there are over forty ways to customize their character portraits. Not only that, but you can use special items to teach your party members skills from other classes in order to maximize your party’s hitting power. Nothing like having a party tailor-made for your own traveling style.

So what do you say? Why not book yourself a flight to Misrid and get out of the cubicle and into some dungeons? Class customization, demon-taming, and dungeon-crawling all await you! I know I’ll be taking that trip to Misrid in April — hope to see you there, dood!

UPDATE: SimCity is currently unavailable while the patch introducing Offline Mode is applied. It'll be up and running later today.

Update 10, which brings offline play to SimCity for the first time, is launching today after successfully coming through final testing. An announcement on the EA forums reads, "Today at 6AM PT we will be releasing Update 10 with Offline play. This involves server down time and the game servers will be unavailable for a few hours."

EA unveiled Update 10 and the new single-player mode back in January, after a 2013 in which the publisher came under severe criticism for implementing an "always-on" system for the city-building sim. That system backfired when servers buckled under the weight.

EA has already said players can access their previously downloaded content in the single-player mode, and they can save their files locally. A new FAQ reveals players still have to sign into Origin to launch the game, but Origin can be put into an offline mode while the single-player mode is being played. [Image: EA]

The few times Mushroom 11 has popped up on my radar, I really didn’t know what I was looking at. There was some talk about shape-shifting fungus, but it all looked a bit formless in the early tech. A smarter man would use that last sentence as a segue, but I am far too dim to link the phase ‘formless’ and the action in Mushroom 11, where you’re a growing mass of mushroom that you have to trim and shape to move through the levels: each cut and slice allows you to grow on. There’s an interesting little puzzle game in all this, and the trailer has spread below the cut. … [visit site to read more]

Hi. I’m Greg (usually known as… well, Greg) from HumaNature Studios, the gang that brought you Doki-Doki Universe. You’d better sit down, because I have some big news. Well, at least medium sized news. Woohoo! Today we’re launching a new, steaming pile of awesomely exciting DLC for our game. Everyone thinks their own kid is adorable, right? But no, really, this is exciting, I promise.

Here’s what we’ve added to the universe of Doki-Doki Universe:

A New Planet Pack

Two new story planets, PIG PIG and ARCTIC 7, each with its own fun new story, and new set of summonables and planet decorations.

3 New Themed Packs of Animating “Dekos” for Doki Doki Mail

Each with 25 adorable new Dekos, named the “Romance Pack,” the “Daily Life Relationship Pack” and the “Vacation Time Holiday Pack.” We’ve also added 30 new Dekos to the basic free set in the game.

The Deluxe Quiz Pack

12 new asteroids with 48 new quiz questions! (These are REALLY good ones, too.)

A totally new feature to the game called Quiz Party Mode. You can now take the personality quiz from the front menu with up to 8 people. This lets you:

  • Guess your friends’ answers and compete to see who knows who the best.
  • It tells everyone in the group what their personality archetype is, and lets each person see the inside of their brain.
  • It lets you know who is the most similar to whom and who is the most different from whom.
  • It also tells you how the different people in the group match up compatibility-wise.

Quiz Party is tons of fun when you have friends over — it’s light and easy and very social. It gets conversations going, and It’s perfect to share with non-gamer types.

13130253165_6fd338a33d_z.jpg

We’ve also added another fun new feature: now when you visit your friends’ planets, in addition to seeing their personality report, you can also see a report that tells you how compatible their personality is with yours. You also leave a “ghost” of yourself behind so that you can see who has been to your planet, and your ghost leaves a little gift for your friend.

Well I sincerely hope you will enjoy the new features. We’ve poured a lot of love into this game and as QT3 says to Alien Jeff on Planet Farroh, “Love is like diarrhea, you can’t control it. It just gushes out all over the place.” Disgusting? Okay, yes! But best to just go with the flow, as it were. Enjoy, be happy, and er, spread the love.

All the best from HumaNature Studios.

The used game market just grew immensely, as Walmart announced plans today to begin taking video game trade-ins across the United States, putting itself in direct competition with GameStop. Starting March 26, those trading their games in at more than 3,100 Walmart stores will receive a gift card usable at any Walmart or Sam's Club location in exchange. All exchanged products are then "sent to be refurbished and made available for purchase in like-new condition starting this summer."

The retailer will accept online trade-ins for all games, but will only allow in-store exchanges for hardware. Walmart provided an exchange rate calculator on its website to give customers an idea of trade-in values. As for functional hardware, when including all the accompanying cables and one controller, the Xbox One has a current trade-in value of $390, the PS4 is $375, the Wii U Deluxe is $120, a 3G-enabled Vita is $95 and 3DS XL is $105. Working copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 currently exchange at $27.72, Dead Rising 3 is $38, the PS4 version of NBA 2K14 is $35.42 and Super Mario 3D World is $38. [Image: Walmart]

We’re coming to you today to let you know that Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster is available to pick up and take home now on both PS3 and PS Vita, bringing two classic RPGs to the modern age. Whether Final Fantasy X was one of your favorite games back on the PS2, or you never got a chance to try it, there’s never been a better time to play.

The HD Remasters of both games are feature complete with all the International Edition content that never got released here in North America, and now they take advantage of all the neat stuff PlayStation consoles offer. You’ve got some major Trophy hunting to do, and the two versions feature cross save compatibility with each other, so if you’ve got both, you never have to be without your game. The music is completely remastered, there’s a bonus audio drama… This is truly the definitive version of both games!

13155486734_fb3e6e1b46_n.jpg13155197935_c9a23256b8_n.jpg

We had a lot of great pre-order bonuses going, and while that window has passed, I can say that there are still very limited quantities of the Collector’s Edition in stock, but they won’t last long. The Collector’s Edition comes with a beautiful 40 page art book, five full-sized lithograph prints, and the Final Fantasy X HD Remaster Blu-ray Soundtrack, which has over six hours of music from the game and the MP3 files available on the disc. The soundtrack alone retails for $59.99, so $79.99 for that plus the game and art book is a pretty good deal by my math.

Finally, near and dear to my heart is the Final Fantasy X | X-2 Art Gallery Exhibition, running now through March 26th at the Gallery Nucleus here in Southern California. If you’re not local to the area, all of the art from the show is currently on auction. These prints are all one of one, and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by Producer Yoshinori Kitase. They will never be reproduced, and a few pieces are even original art by the development staff, including Art Director Yusuke Naora and Character Designer Tetsuya Nomura. All the proceeds from this art will be donated to the Typhoon Haiyan relief effort, so please consider bidding. We’ll ship anywhere in the world.

13155332793_1ff7a9b59b_z.jpg

I’ll end this blog on a personal note to say that it’s been a blast working on Final Fantasy X, a game that I sunk more than 200 happy hours into and never regretted one of them. Not even when a friend saved over my game and I had to start over.

Tidus opens the game with the line, “Listen to my story. This may be our last chance.” So tell us your Final Fantasy X story in the comments. We’d love to hear it!

RPS is at GDC! It’s a match made in heaven because both of our acronyms are three letters long. And so, I have elected to gather cadres of knowledgeable humans each day this week to discuss the best, most important goings-on. Expect very special guests shouting over each other and probably using words like “cultural zeitgeist” and “doodieface.” Today, somewhat belated and also very bad at staying on topic: John, Cara, Hayden of PCWorld/my floor infamy, and myself all gathered on John’s hotel bed for an uncomfortably salacious chat about This War Of Mine, The Stanley Parable‘s emotional aftermath, SoundSelf, weeping American eagles, hedonism, and Cara’s refusal to stop posting PORNOGRAPHY on our virgin website that’s exclusively for children.

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is headed for the Xbox One's older sibling next month, with an Xbox 360 release date of April 9 announced this week. Microsoft exec Phil Spencer used his magic crayon - otherwise known as his Twitter account - to reveal the date, prompting developer Press Play to confirm it.

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood follows on from Max and the Magic Marker, but swaps out that game's 2D sketchings for a detailed 2.5D look. In the platformer, Max uses his magic crayon to manipulate the environment around him, doing things like drawing vines and water streams as he navigate the perils standing between him and saving his little bro.

Now I’m fine with pure building and messing about being considered gaming, but if you absolutely insist on there being some drama then the newly released Survival mode might be for you. There are a number of toggles that you can set, as well as plenty of starting scenarios to launch from, but the basic gist is everything needs energy, and if you don’t have enough of it you’ll die.
