Watch_Dogs devs talk visual bells and whistles, how the delay helped the final product

The following comes from Creative Director Jonathan Morin...

Because I’m getting bombarded by questions : ). Explosions are occurring in many different contexts, so tweaks are made on each case. Its the same for time cycle and weather and AI. Watch Dogs is about dynamism. We could freeze every state of every system and use bling-bling tricks on them, but that’s NOT WD ; ) Just like reality, sometimes cars are less reflective, sometimes it is wet or it rains. Some other times there are no shadows like today in Montreal :).

It’s making it harder on us (way more cases to be handled), but in my mind it’s more beautiful this way as you play. More immersive and elegant. All this matters greatly if you want players to care about the world they are in : )

The following comes from Graphics Technical Director Sebastien Viard...

“Release when it’s done” is indeed the way to go. It’s better for everybody, gamedevs and players.

Those of you buying physical games through Origin will soon have to embrace digital distribution or scope out another store - Origin will cease its offering of disc-based games on April 4, when it transitions to serving solely as a digital license storefront for PC and Mac.

If you're still set on buying discs, remember that this announcement is just for Origin, not EA's general distribution efforts. You'll presumably still be able to pick up physical copies of Dragon Age: Inquisition and the next Mass Effect through other stores. [Image: EA]

Oh, how excited Worms, Worms 2, Worms Armageddon, Worms World Party, Worms Blast, Worms 3D, Worms Forts, Worms 4, Worms: Revolution, Worms: Clan Wars, and Worms Crazy Golf developers Team17 were when they announced they were making something new. “The most important game we’ve worked on in over a decade,” they called the “explosive new IP” Flockers. What could so excite the developer also behind eight Alien Breed games? Lemmings. Flockers is pretty much a new take on Lemmings, the classic nineties puzzler from DMA Design (before it became the hip and trendy Rockstar). … [visit site to read more]

Report: Microsoft pays up to $150M for augmented reality hardware IP
techcrunch.com posted by Joystiq Mar 29 2014 15:30 GMT in Xbox One

The rumors swirling around Microsoft's me-too attitude regarding virtual reality may be more than idle gossip, according to TechCrunch. Citing unnamed sources, the site reports that Microsoft has purchased augmented reality-related intellectual property of wearable tech company Osterhout Design Group for between $100 and $150 million.

The big thing to note here is that Microsoft's IP acquisition revolves around augmented reality, not virtual reality. Think Google Glass, which is augmented reality, vs. Oculus Rift, which is virtual reality - the former lets you see the world with more information and visual enhancements, while the latter completely replaces the world and what you see with an entirely separate one.

It's also not clear whether this acquisition will lead to anything resembling the Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus for the Xbox; wearable tech is gaining traction in the mobile markets, with devices such as the Galaxy Gear from Samsung now on their second design iteration. In other words, Microsoft's acquisition of ODG's intellectual property may lead to new products which attach to Windows Phone as opposed to Xbox.

Really, any guess is fair game at this point. We won't know for sure how Microsoft intends to penetrate the VR and/or AR tech space until they themselves announce what, if anything, they're working on. [Image: Microsoft]
