It's not just that it's "difficult." It's not that it beats you down, over and over again, sometimes pushing you to the brink of frustration and frustration's cousin: rage quitting. Dark Souls II is enjoyable because you can overcome that. Because you can be better—tougher, wiser—than the challenges it throws your way. Imagine that: tougher than the toughest game out there. No achievement can stand up to that.Read more...

The first official (and totally not real) bit of premium DLC for open-world shooter Arma 3 is kart racing. Arma 3 Karts includes (well, it would, if it existed) time-trial races and open-world kart battles, with seven versions of vehicles to choose from.

"Since we're already in the zombie business with DayZ, we felt the next logical expansion would be to take on karting," (real) Creative Director Jay Crowe writes on the Bohemia Interactive blog. "Our sandbox could not be called complete without karts, and thus we set ourselves the goal to recreate this pure form of racing. Welcome to Arma 3's World of Karts: drive / overtake / win."

This is State of Service, an ongoing review of the online service of a recently launched game. See our scored review of Titanfall here. Tuesday, April 1 | T-minus 9 days until final verdict
Current State of Service: Good
Summary: PC version experiencing limited issues. Matchmaking update in the works. Anti-cheating system enabled on PC.

Apart from a brief server outage last Tuesday, and an issue with Australian servers in particular, Titanfall appears to be humming along on both PC and Xbox One. Servers for both versions went down during the afternoon on March 25, apparently as the result of broader problems with Xbox Live. Servers were back online that evening. Meanwhile, Australian players encountered an issue in which servers would return a ping of -1, making them unusable. The problem was "sporadic," and it was corrected as of March 31, according to official Titanfall Twitter account.

Joystiq staff members have been playing both versions with no significant problems to report.

In other service news, Respawn is working on an update to Titanfall's matchmaking to keep weaker teams from being consistently dominated by stronger teams. Furthermore, the PC version has been updated to combat cheating. Cheaters detected by the game are subsequently only allowed to play with other cheaters, where they will enjoy what Respawn calls "the Wimbledon of aimbot contests."

If you encounter any problems with Titanfall, let us know in the comments or on Joystiq's Twitter or Facebook accounts (use the hashtag #sos and don't forget to specify your platform!).

Hello youse.

Sometimes a wee game comes along that just feels nice. It drops a board game reviewer in a difficult spot, because saying a game feels nice doesn’t actually tell anyone anything. Through the words below I will try to explain why Splendor works so well.

But it does feel nice. Honestly.

The following comments come from an EDGE interview with GoldenEye director/producer, Martin Hollis...

“We looked at the names of weapons on the market at the time. We found that some letters of the alphabet are found more regularly in gun names than others. Some letters sound more aggressive and these ones tend to be picked by manufacturers when naming products.

For example, we had the DD44 Dostovei, which was named after David Doak. The tradition even carried into follow-up Perfect Dark… But the Klobb was named after Ken Lobb, who was our Nintendo-side producer and contact.

I do slightly regret naming such a poor weapon after him, since I am tremendously fond of the man. He is astonishingly enthusiastic about games, even after years of working in the industry. It’s a little unfair that we named such a useless weapon after him. And for that I am sorry.”

Crossovers are an everyday occurrence in the comics industry, where Spider-Man hangs with Wolverine, Batman stops by Teen Titans HQ, and Aliens battle Predators. But not all crossovers make as much sense as these do. Here are a dozen of them that aren't necessarily bad, but they're all definitely weird.Read more...

Mid-way through Rezzed, I decided that somebody must have cloned Dean Hall. The DayZ creator was everywhere. One minute he was talking about the most frightening moment of his life – hanging off the side of Everest, I hear – and the next he was playing games on the showfloor. If he wasn’t admiring Maia with an excited twinkle in his eye, he was telling interested parties about how much he digs Project Zomboid. The man loves games and since he has so many interesting things to say about them, we should be thankful that he enjoys talking about them quite as much as he does. One panel involved The Indie Stone folk and Hall talking about zombies. They offer a defence of the oft-maligned enemy and it’s often compelling. Behold.

A portion of a Comicosity interview with Archie's Ian Flynn and Paul Kaminski...

C: Thanks so much for taking the time to talk about Mega Man X, gentlemen! As we get closer to the “Dawn of X” storyline in Mega Man, what are you perceiving are the biggest differences between Mega Man and his counterpart 100 years in the future?

Ian Flynn: I guess one difference is how they view the world. Rock has this unwavering optimism that stems from his built-in child-like naivety. X likewise hopes and strives for a better tomorrow, but has a harder time maintaining his idealism. That stems from their fundamental physical differences: Rock has some room to grow, but he will always be a robot, whereas X is a truly thinking, feeling, sentient individual.

Paul Kaminski: It’s a dystopian future, so X kind of got the long end of the stick on the whole “nature versus nurture” thing. He’s got to face a more challenging world around him, which affects how he reacts to a given situation. Mega Man is surrounded by family: Dr. Light, his sister Roll, his Robot Master brothers-in-arms– even a pet dog! X is surrounding be morally ambiguous characters with shady motives, which takes its toll. “Good guys” and “bad guys” are a lot easier to handle when there’s more definition between the two!

I submitted, found a major bug, recalled my submission, tried to fix it, didn't fix it but created even bigger bugs (i.e. game doesn't run)

— 4 Corner Games (@4CornerGames) April 1, 2014

There's light at the end of the tunnel. The current build has one smaller bug (a weird rare freeze), but otherwise runs perfectly.

— 4 Corner Games (@4CornerGames) April 1, 2014

This is the version I'm submitting to Nintendo. I know it has this bug. I will work on fixing it and shoot for an update. I apologize.

— 4 Corner Games (@4CornerGames) April 1, 2014

I should specify: Freeze does NOT MEAN CRASH. The game just pauses for about .5 seconds and then resumes. Working to fix.

"There are no dangerous thoughts," said Hannah Arendt, the philosopher who died writing The Life of the Mind, "Thinking itself is dangerous." Her words ring loudly while playing Ether One. The protagonist of White Paper Games' surreal adventure, called The Restorer, literally has to go into broken minds and try to put them back together. The concept alone is unsettling. Naturally, Joystiq Streams wants in on that juicy, psychologically harrowing action! That's why we're digging into the game's guts alongside its designer, Pete Bottomley.

At 4PM EST on the Joystiq Twtich channel, Joystiq's Sam Prell will be playing through Ether One with Bottomley in tow to discuss the game and the inspiration behind its spooky brain spelunking. Anthony John Agnello will be on hand to feed your questions directly to the man.
