Combat simulator War Thunder is a pretty big departure from Bit.Trip series developer Gaijin Games' rhythm-driven past. Gaijin is adding cross-platform multiplayer to its list of first-time ventures, a mechanic that Gaijin CEO Anton Yudintsev told GameSpot is not allowed on the Xbox One. Gaijin says that absence is why War Thunder cannot be on the console.

"Microsoft is not allowing cross-play completely; which means [War Thunder] cannot be on Xbox One," Yudintsev told GameSpot. He explained that Microsoft requires a certification of game servers to guarantee a positive experience for players, a goal that Yudintsev says "isn't possible under the current circumstances."

He added that Microsoft has a lot of "unspoken limitations" for free-to-play games, including a system of approval that's more based on whether the project's account manager likes the game, rather than a general set of rules. In contrast, Yudintsev stated that Sony is more open to free-to-play games, adding that the PS4 version of War Thunder is expected to support cross-play as early as next month.

Microsoft responded to the story, stating that it works with developers interested in supporting cross-play between the Xbox One and PC to "ensure a great user experience." On the upside, Yudintsev complimented Microsoft's ID@Xbox initiative, adding that he hopes Microsoft's changing policies for indie games will allow Gaijin to eventually launch War Thunder on Xbox One. It’s been a very forward-looking week on PlayStation.Blog, from this list of every game coming to PS4 in 2014, to our first look at upcoming PS4 stunners Alien: Isolation and Batman: Arkham Knight, this year is shaping up pretty nicely so far!

The indie dimension-bender Fez and Destiny of Spirits are out now, Hatsune Miku is getting an encore in North America, we still love PlayStation developers (1,000 and counting!), April’s PS Plus Instant Game Collection got an official unveil, There’s a handy new PS Vita system software update available, and Ubisoft dropped a hot new trailer for Watch_Dogs that details the finer points of their futuristic Chicago.

Dark Souls II still rules my life — 45 hours in and I think I’m getting near the end… but I could be horribly, maddeningly wrong. Who else is playing? Have you finished it yet?

  • I’m playing: Dark Souls II, Luftrausers
  • I’m watching: Seinfeld, Dark Souls II Twitch streams
  • I’m listening to: The TowerFall Ascension soundtrack (so good)

Jeffrey Yohalem, writer of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, has revealed that, like an Assassin in a crowd of monks, the setting of the next Assassin's Creed game has been in front of us all along. Yohalem was asked by a fan on Twitter if the flashing symbols shown during the ending of Brotherhood were a hint for the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Unity, to which Yohalem responded:

"Yup."

Yohalem also noted that another symbol shown during the ending, the Eye of Providence, hinted at the setting for Assassin's Creed 3. Oo, this is fun! Let's see, what other symbols can we find? Well, there's what kind of looks like a Shinto shrine and ... is that a cave drawing of a monkey with a super curly tail? Man, we really should have paid more attention in History class. A portion of a B-Ten interview with Straight Right...

B-T: Were there any features, specific for the Wii U version of the game, that you had hoped to put into the game but weren’t able to?

SR: Of course! With any project there are a ton of things that go on a ‘wish list’ and it’s never the case that you get to them all. On Mass Effect 3 we exceeded our initial target specification, thanks in part to the commitment from BioWare to ensuring that the game met their own exacting benchmarks in terms of quality. They gave us the time and the latitude to get that job done. I don’t look back on any feature in particular and think “if only we could have added that.” I think for the most part we got the job done.

A portion of an ONM interview with voice actor Christopher Robin Miller...

ONM: And how did you land the role of Professor Layton?

CRM: The process was rather typical. I do a dozen or so of these auditions every week. My agent called me in to read for an out-of-state opportunity. I knew that hundreds of people were being submitted from all over the country.

The likelihood of success was at the lottery-winning level, but the five or so lines on the script with the brief character description above them grabbed me. It sounds weird, but sometimes a script says, "You're mine!"

ONM: Where exactly did the voice come from? Is it based on anyone in particular?

CRM: He's an amalgam of several influences. I am a character actor and have always been drawn to the quirks that such performers have. They play the most interesting people. The Professor is a kind of mix of the Narrator (Sebastian Cabot) and Owl (Hal Smith) from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. I mentioned this in another interview, in which I named Sebastian Cabot and then Owl and failed to mention Hal Smith. I wrote my answer at 2:00am and it sounded like I thought S.C. played Owl. My bad, people. All I can say is, the professor needs his sleep!

- hybrid platformer/shooter game.
- controls are twin-stick based
- you have a rotatable auto-regenerating shield that disables while you shoot
- called Rewind

Remember, this project isn't 100% confirmed for Wii U. Two Tribes has admitted to considering the platform for release, but hasn't cemented that decision yet. Thanks to ActiveGamer for the heads up!

As you can see, there's been a bit of a redesign put in place for Rusty's Real Deal Baseball in the states. Now Rusty has big cartoon eyes instead of his Brock-like eyes in Japan. Seems like this may have been done to avoid claims that the original design was insulting to the Japanese. Nevermind the fact that the original was designed by Japanese devs...
