A portion of a Nintendo Life review...

Metroid Fusion is a fantastic start to the GBA Virtual Console library, and if later additions can be of this calibre then it will prove to be a phenomenal service indeed.

A new trailer released today reveals that Frictional Games' upcoming horror-themed adventure game Soma takes place underwater, contrasting the game's previously assumed space setting.

First revealed in October last year, Soma is the latest project from Amnesia: The Dark Descent developer Frictional Games. While little has been revealed regarding the game so far (thus the previous confusion regarding its setting), players in Soma are tasked with a salvage mission aboard a derelict craft where "machines are taking on human traits and alien constructions have started to interfere with routine."

Soma is due to launch for PC platforms and the PlayStation 4 in 2015.

Unclaimed World is a sci-fi colony sim game that took to Steam Early Access a few days ago. Right now it’s only a fragment of the full game, so everything’s subject to change and expansion, but its science-led approach drew to me to trying its initial public release anyway.

I’m a sucker for science-heavy science fiction games right now. This perhaps has much to do with understanding very little science. Where, as a child, science seemed dull, as an ill-informed adult science now seems to be magic. I revel in my ignorance. SCIENCE. So it is that the idea of my stranded spacefarers in Unclaimed World creating a cooking pot out of bits of crashed spaceship, or a fishing from an alien tree, is a more thrilling accomplishment to me than Johnny SpacePecs sacrificing his own life to defeat the ancient curse of Skeletron or Ian Soldier blasting the entire empire of Big Evil Bastards to smithereens with the fabled Garglelator 9000. That guy just built a saucepan out of litter. That guy is now my hero. … [visit site to read more]

Following last week's Improved Matchmaking Beta, developer Respawn has issued an update for mechanized shooter Titanfall that improves matchmaking in both the "Attrition" and "Hardpoint" game types.

This update has been designed to counter one of Titanfall's most glaring flaws: its seemingly random method of matching would-be titan pilots in multiplayer. Titanfall itself has received glowing praise, but few would argue that the original matchmaking system made any sort of sense. Though this update will not affect matchmaking in the Campaign portion of Titanfall, Respawn claims that further matchmaking updates are on the way, just as soon as the studio can properly test their changes.

Titanfall's matchmaking update is available to all players at no charge and should be installed the next time you fire up your giant robot of choice. [Image: EA]

A portion of a C3 interview with dev Lewis Pugh...

Cubed3: How does the Wii U GamePad controller come into play?

Lewis Pugh: The GamePad acts as Cora's smartphone. You have different widgets displayed that give you information from the game. The weather widget can let you know what the forecast is and the clock, the exact time of day. You can also adjust the difficulty slider, similar to how it is handled in Kid Icarus Uprising. The higher the difficulty, the bigger rewards you will get from enemy encounters.

Cubed3: Would you consider portable platforms like Nintendo 3DS for a port at somepoint?

Lewis Pugh: I'm not sure Twisted Fusion could squeeze down to the 3DS, but I've not played with one in development, so can't say for sure. One of the great things about the 3DS is StreetPass, so if I made a game on there, I would make sure there were some cool StreetPass features to reward any two people matching up with my game.

Cubed3: What are your plans for the future - would you consider more platforms or sequels for Cora?

Lewis Pugh: I would definitely consider a sequel with Cora or maybe another adventure for her on the 3DS? I do also like to mix things up so I would likely first give her a break and try something new in a different genre. My favourite portable game is Advance Wars and would love to have a crack at a game in a similar vain.

Oh dear. Oh no. This can’t be allowed, surely. The rules are that Skylanders gets to exist because it’s marketed so cynically at kids that we’re all too embarassed to go out and buy them for ourselves. They get one radically cool design per release and everyone but the parents goes home happy. Prodigy is breaking these fundamental laws by doing something similar to the model-battling juggernaut, but with an awesome fantasy style. For the unacquainted, this is an RPG where party members are represented by actual physical models and are then moved around a board, which communicates with the electronics in their base. Devs Hanakai Studio have put it up on Kickstarter asking for a meagre $100k, towards which they are already halfway at the time of writing. Have a look below.

Airtight Games, developer of Murdered: Soul Suspect and Quantum Conundrum, suffered layoffs this week. The studio let go of 14 employees, confirmed by IGN as part of a "necessary restructuring" for the developer.

Airtight's restructuring was deemed "part of the normal ebb and flow of game production" and that the studio's current projects are still on schedule. The developer announced a June 3 release date for Murdered: Soul Suspect roughly one month ago. Square Enix said the "core team is continuing to work towards shipping in June."

One previous employee of Airtight Games, the studio's creative director and Portal Co-Creator Kim Swift, joined Amazon Game Studios yesterday along with Far Cry 2 Lead Designer Clint Hocking. [Image: Airtight Games]
