This week's PlayStation Plus lineup has something in store for both longtime PlayStation 3 fans and PS4 die-hards, offering up Batman: Arkham City and the debuting console version of Mercenary Kings free of charge.

Mercenary Kings, developed by Wizorb creator Tribute Games, melds the run-and-gun gameplay of the arcade classic Metal Slug with an online cooperative multiplayer mode and an in-depth item-crafting component. Tomorrow's PlayStation 4 release marks the first time Mercenary Kings is available on a console platform, following up on its Steam Early Access debut last year.

Batman: Arkham City, originally released in 2011, finds the Dark Knight trapped in a walled-off section of Gotham City filled with classic villains and other miscreants. The downloadable PlayStation Plus version of Arkham City includes the Catwoman Bundle Pack, which adds a series of exclusive story missions and in-game collectibles.

Both games will be available for PlayStation Plus members in North America starting tomorrow. Other PS Plus games premiering in April include Castle of Illusion, Stealth Inc, and Velocity Ultra.

A portion of a C3 review...

Pure Chess is a solid way to play the popular board game offline and features a great presentation, but unfortunately, its online component is very inconsistent. Sending a move can range from being instant to taking up to several minutes, which really hurts the experience.

I’m a firm believer that a puzzle game needs to stand apart from whatever license or theme it has slapped on it. The game is the mechanic, after all. This is a case where characters are really the only really appealing thing there is.

Watch_Dogs tech lead discusses the intricate details of animation

A portion of an official Watch_Dogs tumblr interview with Jack Potter, Tech Lead...

WDT: What part of your work on Watch_Dogs are you particularly proud of?

JP: The tricky thing about being in this part of the animation pipeline is that almost all animations go through my code but I can never go: “this is mine”. The animators created it and the gameplay programmers implemented it. So it’s all part of a team effort. However, I was able to put a lot of love into the “Living City” aspect of Watch_Dogs. The amount or detail and variation you’ll find in this game, it’s incredible. One of the big innovations in the “Living City” was making scenarios that are less static. For example, you’ll see a guy drinking a coffee cup as he walks down the street and then he puts it in the garbage. There’s no code that says: “Guy drink coffee and puts it in bin”. It’s all a big data system that animators will use. You can use the same system to have a mailman delivering letters around the city or people buying drugs in a back alley. It’s all truly quite powerful. It means that animators can get the most out of the actors because they can improvise. These subtle things sell the city in a good way, but on a sub-conscious level. We have to deal with all the “what if’s”, and I think we were able to pull it off.
