The Lighthouse Customer: DayZ (Experimental Branch)

Each Monday, Chris Livingston visits an early access game and reports back with stories about whatever he finds inside. This week, survival horror in DayZ’s experimental branch.

While nearly two million players have paid to act as DayZ’s beta testers, there’s a much smaller subset of lighthouse customers acting as beta testers to those beta testers. On a handful of DayZ experimental branch servers, changes are rolled out and played with weeks before being introduced to the early access game at large. This week I opted into the experimental branch, keen to inhale the future of DayZ before most players even get a whiff.

Kinect Sports Rivals review: The crowd goes mild
joystiq.com posted by Joystiq Apr 07 2014 20:00 GMT in Xbox One

Kinect Sports Rivals looks like a mobile game for the new, hit reality sports show that all of your friends will be watching, according to its prime time commercials. The game is crowded with bright colors, an excitable narrator, a hard-ass trainer, prompts to buy perks for your character and ads for State Farm.

It differs from a tie-in mobile game in a couple of important ways: It's on the big screen and is designed to use Xbox One's Kinect for every interaction. The entire game can be controlled with voice and hand motions, in theory. That theory breaks down if your pets are running around and confusing the Kinect as you play, or if your friends all want to sit on the couch behind you, or if you happen to be 10 years old, like my little brother, and miss important instructions among all the banter and color explosions.

A portion of a TXH interview with Snowcastle's Bendik Stang...

TXH: Kickstarter is your main hope behind funding this, once the goals are complete what is the next step? What happens if the worst happens and your targets aren’t reached? Do you have a Plan B?

BS: Once we are successful we’ll ramp up production of Earthlock! We have collaborated with great people to get Earthlock to the alpha state it’s in, and once we see the funds we can bring those people aboard again and speed up production of story, assets and get the game out by 2015. As for plan B, yes we are looking at other ways of getting the funds we need, but nothing is certain. One thing we know for sure is that we will not lie down and give up.
Cloven-screen: Goat Simulator Adding Multiplayer

Goat Simulator is pretty much a dicking about simulator but oh, how lonely and pointless it is to dick about by yourself! Perhaps that’s the entire reason the goat is acting up. Why, put it in a pen with another real goat and perhaps they’d happily amble about and chew the cud all day long. I suppose we’ll find out in May, as developers Coffee Stain Studios are planning to add split-screen co-op with the first big patch and a new map t’boot.

Happy Monday! We’re excited to share this first extended look at MLB 14 The Show on PS4. In this dev diary, Ramone Russell, Community Manager and Game Designer, shows off some of the improvements and graphical upgrades the team at San Diego Studio has made to the environments of some of the most storied and iconic stadiums in all of baseball.

Each of the 30 Major League stadiums and ballparks have their own personality and vibe — no two are alike. With the power of the PS4, the team has been able to recreate these unique cathedrals like never before. A new lighting engine, a nearly 10x increase in polygon count and over 1,000 unique character crowd models bring these stadiums to life.

Find out why Baseball is Better with MLB 14 The Show when it launches on the PS4 May 6th.

Mario's multi-coin blocks - from glitch to feature

I don't know if I'm really, really behind on this, but I had no knowledge of this story.

GamesRadar put together a feature on game glitches that became features. According to them, the original Super Mario Bros. wasn't supposed to have question mark blocks that popped out multiple coins. This was a glitch that the programmers set out to scrap. They actually changed their mind when they saw how that multi-coin glitch impacted gameplay. The idea to have one coin per block was scrapped and the glitch became a feature.
