"Mutha*crag*as act like they forgot about Doom 3," John Carmack did not say. But I do enjoy imagining him saying things like that.

Hey guys, Doom 3, right? Pretty good game, albeit one that some have perhaps forgotten about in the many years since its release. Well, id Software and Bethesda apparently have no interest in allowing people to forget about Doom 3, as today they have announced the Doom 3 "BFG Edition," coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this fall.

The BFG edition includes both the main game as well as the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack, both of which feature remastered visuals, which include support for 3D monitors and TVs. In addition to improved visuals, the game includes several new levels included under the moniker "The Lost Mission," as well as a new checkpoint save system, and an armor-mounted flashlight that will give players the revolutionary ability to shine light on things and also shoot them. Simultaneously!

And as if that weren't all enough, the package also includes versions of Doom and Doom 2, which you may or may not already have, depending on what platform you tend to play games on. This would seem to be especially enticing for PlayStation 3 owners, since none of these games have ever appeared on that platform.

The one thing the press release for the BFG Edition doesn't quite address is why, exactly, there is a re-release of Doom 3 coming to retail this year. This year will mark the 8th anniversary of the game's release, which isn't really one of those anniversaries you see game companies celebrating too often. Perhaps this is simply intended as a reminder that Doom is still a franchise that people enjoy, in service of readying the demon-blasting masses for a future Doom sequel announcement? I am speculating wildly, of course, but with E3 around the corner, now seems like a great time for wild speculation. You try it. It's fun!
