The following info comes from a Joystiq interview with Masahiro Sakurai.

- each version of the game has completely different stages
- cross-platform play wouldn't work
- each version will interact with one another
- take characters you've customized and transfer them to the Wii U version
- customizatios won't be costumes and they won't be something that players have to unlock
- different costumes would take away from what makes each character unique
- wants to avoid boring, repetitive tasks
- "stress free, easy connectivity" between the two versions
- no comment on level editor

there is literally no point in getting the 3DS version if you can't cross play-fight unless you REALLY want the mobility or don't have a wii U.

Yeah that's a great example, the stellar 3DS Monster Hunter game with no online play.

I'm interested in how customizable characters work, that does suck about cross-platforming though. I guess everyone will get the Wii U version.

He said that cross play wouldn't work between the platforms yet monster hunter shows that the 3DS and wii U can act as controller inputs between the two systems. All I'm saying is that there are certainly ways they could pull it off.

He said it doesn't work because each game has different levels (yeah, dumb reason). Apparently they never planned to have cross-play, everyone just assumed it.
