Hmm, here’s a thing. An announcement has been made at Russian game convention KRI, saying that Obsidian and the Allods team Astrum Nival are going to be making a new MMO, the trailer for which you can see below. Sadly it’s in Russian, which I do not speak. Anyone able to give us the gist?

The game is called Skyforge and Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart described it as “interesting and promising.” It’s certainly interesting. The game appears to be a sequel, of sorts, to Allods, and it seems as if Obsidian will be helping out with the making the game – which was announced originally in May 2012 – appear “promising” to European and North American audiences. We’ll hear more about this in the next couple of weeks, no doubt.(more…)

An Allod, as I understand it, is one of the many shattered bits of the Allods Online world that makes up the floating archipelago in which the game is set. The latest patch, New Horizons, introduces the opportunity for players to own an Allod, as well as build upon it. There’s also a revamped psionicist class, and some other changes to how things work that are intended to please the existing audience. All this is detailed in a new trailer, which I’ve careless dropped down the back of this post. It’s introduced, for reasons I can’t quite father, by a crab and a troll playing battleships with Allods own flying space galleons.

Allods Online is of course free to play, very pretty, and by all accounts, a bit unbalanced. Still, it might be worth a look if you’re in the market for paying nothing at all.(more…)

This week we’re speaking to two producers from Allods Online; Lori Bray and Vincent Douvier about liberalising Russia, if pay to play games have a long-term life and the empty shelves of the next generation. Oh, and about Allods Online.

I found Allods to be interesting, but frankly a bit lacking where it counts, when I played it. The operators of the free MMO, Gala Networks, are trying to reduce some of those issues with their new expansion for the game, Undaunted, which as well as pouring in new content massively reduces the rate of grind required to get through the first 25 levels. It should, apparently, bring the rate of progress a little closer to the industry standards of WoW and so forth. Whether that will see people return to the game, I am not sure.

The trailer, below, isn’t particularly inspiring and is quite peculiarly edited. Hmm. Stuff like this makes me wonder whether we’re going to start seeing some serious casualties in the free-to-play space, with the better games starting to rise to the top…(more…)

Allods Online, which is actually not bad in the scheme of free-to-play MMOs, is hitting its official launch “very soon”, along with its fourth expansion. It’s had one hell of a beta, with three expansions added, bringing the game to a 2000-quest beast, which I think was about how questy WoW was on launch. The expansion is for high level players and adds more to that Astral space conquest bit of the game in which big space-galleons do fighting and stuff, as well as more high level content and things that you can buy if you want to spend money on the game. Anyone actually playing this? Is it more balanced than it was when I was playing it?
