With EA Canada focused on EA's upcoming UFC game, the Fight Night franchise has been put on hold at EA Sports.

"Right now, a great portion of the core of the Fight Night team are actually the team that are building UFC," EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson told IGN. "Do I see a future for Fight Night? You know, sure. But right now, UFC is where our fighting focus is."

2011's Fight Night Champion was the latest game in EA's boxing franchise, introducing a new "Full-Spectrum" punch control system and a Hollywood-inspired campaign following fictitious convict boxer's struggle to overcome adversity and many, many punches to the face. The series was born from the ashes of EA's previous boxing series, Knockout Kings, in 2004.

#dlc Fight Night Champion notably included bare-knuckle fighting during the prison chapters of its narrative mode, but the fighters in the main roster didn't participate in such bouts. Now some will. The game's first DLC extension, due out next Tuesday, adds bare-knuckle "Old School Rules" to online and offline play. More »

As of the release of Fight Night Champion, EA Sports will no longer be including paper manuals with its games. Kotaku reports that the decision comes as part of an effort for the company to be more environmentally friendly. Instead of full paper manuals, future EA titles will include an in-game digital manual instead. Ubisoft recently made a similar decision -- just check your Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood box.

Given recent trends to 'go green,' and the fact that digital manuals eliminate printing costs, we wouldn't be surprised to see more publishers follow suit.

#rumor Two weeks ago, a video leaked out legit-looking screenshots claiming to be an alpha build of Fight Night Champion's first downloadable content. EA Sports is announcing what's in the first pack tomorrow, but if this video is real, it's five all-time great fighters, plus Cowboys Stadium as a venue. More »

#criticism The concept behind Fight Night Champion's narrative "Champion Mode" inspired me when I read of it. I looked forward to it as a breakthrough opportunity for the sports genre. But it served up a tray of disappointingly bland cookie-cut characters and conflicts, and the progression of your career was too short and too rigid. That doesn't mean it was a bad idea. More »

The latest dev diary for Fight Night Champion details the title's biggest, newest feature: Online Gyms. Create a fighter and join the ranks of a player-made gym, brawling up tournament ladders and taking on other teams. Just make sure your gym has a clever name, first. (For instance: "Boxers.")

#soundtracks It's an appropriate opening for a song placed in a game that begins in prison. "You know you *crag*ed up, right?" begins "The Loser Wins," by Atmosphere. In another sports game, this would have to be blanked out, or just not used. More »

#fightnightchampion In the second scene of Fight Night Champion, the most unusual boxing game EA has ever made, you're getting beat up in a prison bathroom. You're a guy named Andre Bishop, and you've just beaten a neo-Nazi-looking guy fair and square in a bareknuckle fight in the middle of a ring. Prisoners in orange jumpsuits were cheering you on. Previously I mentioned how it’s been a first for EA SPORTS to have a dedicated story-driven Champion Mode alongside an enhanced Legacy Career Mode. Another first now comes with the demo that allows gamers to play head-to-head online until end of day February 17th. The beta period serves as an opportunity not only for fans of the series to get a taste of the game with their friends, but also as a means to gather feedback for the development team, who will have the ability to tweak certain aspects of gameplay without title updates.

“This year, we have set the game up so that we can update several game play variables online and deploy them fairly quickly without having to patch the game,” explains Gameplay Producer Brian Hayes. “With these ‘Tuner Sets’ we can make slight adjustments to stamina, punch power, counter windows, boxing ratings, and Create Boxer XP growth for online and offline gameplay. For offline gameplay alone, we will be able to adjust AI and Legacy Mode logic if we are finding that these can help make for an authentic in-ring experience.”

As I also manage the NHL community, who first used the Tuner Sets, I know that both the community and developers have benefited from not having to go through the longer process of providing title updates. Hayes goes on to say that not all gameplay aspects can be changed — however, judging by the comments from some demo players, the game may not need any changes at all.

“Fight Night Champion goes into a new direction as it continues the quest of capturing the essence and vision of the sport of boxing while building off of its previous foundations in a significant attempt to be considered one of the best sports games ever created,” says Anthony Lynn aka Indigo72 on PSN of UntilTheNextRound.com.

Ant was one of seven community members we invited participate in an early feedback session back in October of 2010. This group brought along a multi-page wishlist for the dev team and, so far, the demo is being regarded as much improved, especially in the online virtual ring where a lot of the cheese and sometimes unrealistic play from Round 4 has been removed.

To this point, online connectivity has been solid as over 1.5 million bouts have been played online and we hope gamers can continue to play during the time online is available to receive that continued feedback. You’re also welcome to comment below with your feedback on the demo or if you have any questions that I may be able to field on behalf of the developers.

Check my previous entry here on the PlayStation.Blog for the Full Spectrum Punch Controls video. And today, I’m providing some diagrams from the Controls Tutorials Blog on our FNC homepage along with some basics to get you started with the demo. But first you have to go download it…so do that NOW!

We never understood boxing's moniker as "the sweet science" until this very moment. See, before watching the Fight Night Champion offense and defense dev diaries below, we just thought the sport was as simple as "punch without being punched." Apparently, there's a bit more to it than that.
