A new and improved version of GTA: San Andreas is coming to mobile platforms next month.

Rockstar Games points out the mobile port of the PS2 game will have remastered graphics with better shadows. The mobile port also has a greater draw distance, improved color palette and enhanced models for both characters and cars, which Rockstar says will up the graphical fidelity to "make this the best-looking version of San Andreas yet."

On top of bringing all the purdy to the small screen, GTA: San Andreas for mobile also improves upon the original's controls with a new contextual control option that displays buttons only when needed, though Rockstar hasn't said specifically how that will work. Rockstar has also added a trio of new control schemes for driving and maneuvering and overhauled the game's checkpoint system for "easier progression."

GTA San Andreas for mobile will have full controller support, including Made for iOS controller functionality on iOS 7, and is planned to launch on iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile devices sometime next month.

We’d like to let all PlayStation fans know that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to PlayStation Store as a ‘PS2 Classic’ in today’s update. That means you can revisit the cities of Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, as well as the surrounding countryside and mountains, exactly as they appeared on the PlayStation 2 back in 2004, on your PS3.

To help you prepare we’ve raided our archives for a video called ‘The Introduction’. This 20-minute prologue video highlights the action in the days before the story in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas begins. The Introduction is told from various characters’ viewpoints, which are intertwined together to reveal the network of organized crime forces operating throughout the state of San Andreas. Tension builds as threats are carried out, stakes are raised and communication breaks down. In Los Santos, a drive-by shooting in Grove Street Family’s territory ignites a series of events to be further explored in the game.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas hits PlayStation Store today for $14.99 / €14.99 / £11.99.

PlayStation Hong Kong offers another shred of evidence that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is indeed making its way to PS3, listing the game as a download with a release date of December 12. San Andreas was rated by the ESRB for PS3 this year, as was Vice City and Grand Theft Auto 3. GTA 3 launched on PSN as a PS2 classic in September.

The Grand Theft Auto games are infiltrating a few new devices recently, topped off with Vice City's launch on iOS last week. Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto 5 fans are scoping out yet another platform for that game's launch, with a petition to get it on PC.

Michael "Shagg" Washington, supposed former Cypress Hill backup singer (though the band denied any affiliation), lost his 2010 lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games over alleged use of his likeness in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Wednesday. Washington claimed he met with the game's developers in 2003 to discuss his troubled youth and "street life." He first learned of his resemblance to the game's "CJ" character six years later, leading to the $250 million lawsuit.

The California appeals court upheld the ruling in favor of Take-Two, in which the judge said the "plaintiff is relying entirely on CJ's physical appearance in the game, but that appearance is so generic that it necessarily includes hundreds of other black males." The lack of evidence in whether Take-Two actually used Washington's likeness, in addition to a failed test for insufficiently transformative use, led to Washington losing the case.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas now has an ESRB rating for PlayStation 3, following in the footsteps of PS2 siblings GTA 3 and Vice City. Curiously, the ESRB also re-rated Vice City for PS3, maybe feeling the need for a nostalgic revisit in light of its 10th anniversary and arrival on iOS and Android.

With GTA 3 recently releasing on PSN as a PS2 Classic, it's not such a great leap to suggest we'll be seeing Vice City and San Andreas do the same in the future.

#batman Wouldn't it be awesome to be Batman? I mean, without all of the angst, perhaps. And without the years of training. And the constant threat of bodily harm. And the... hmm. Okay, you know what? I already thought that Saints Row was a weird series of games. It felt like it came from some strange universe where the general feeling was that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas didn't go "far enough." Saints Row: The Third seems like it's just getting weirder with a premise that's been optimized to get you into the most ridiculous gear as soon as it possibly can.

I'm not just talking about stuff like rocket launchers and assault rifles. I'm not even talking about the big dildo bat that the developers showed off at an event I attended awhile back. I'm talking about air strikes. And the "Apocafist," which is a pair of gloves that make pedestrians explode when you deck them. Or how about a VTOL jet that shoots laser beams? At some point descriptors like "over-the-top" just don't go far enough. Saints Row: The Third looks *crag*ing crazy.

The story doesn't appear to be interested in normalizing things, either. At this point, your gang, The Saints, has become extremely popular. So much so, in fact, that they've completely sold out. There are Saints-branded energy drinks. A Saints movie is in the works. You can get masks with Johnny Gat's face on them. In fact, the Saints themselves are such celebrities that they decide to rob a bank while wearing those masks during the game's first mission. While that's going on, bank patrons are stopping you for autographs. When the robbery goes totally sideways and the cops are called in, even they're shouting things like "please autograph and then drop your weapon" as you attempt to escape via a helicopter that's trying to lift the bank's vault right out of the building. It's completely stupid, but I'm not sure that I mean "stupid" as a bad thing.

The robbery goes bad because the bank was owned by an organization known as The Syndicate. They, as you might have guessed, aren't too happy about getting robbed, so they start striking out at the Saints and the game progresses from there. It appears to still be Stilwater, and a lot of optional missions--including old favorites like Insurance Fraud--will be available to you. Of course, there's plenty of gunplay, and what was shown looked just fine. You'll also be able to purchase businesses. In the demo we saw, a costume shop was purchased, opening up plenty of clothing options, like a Saints-colored spacesuit.

It was a brief demo that held a lot of promise for the future of the franchise. I actually skipped most of Saints Row 2, primarily because exhaustively playing the first game burned me out on the minigames and secondary missions that the series has become known for. But now that more time has passed, I think I could come back to that stuff... especially if I can do it all while blowing apart the opposing gangs from the comfort of a hovering jet. Actually, if Volition is willing to show the VTOL jet and those other weapons right now, what sort of stuff must they be holding back for the final release?

More sites should interview mod-makers, I feel. If one of this week’s picks is anything to go by, they can have some interesting things to say. Modding might not usually be quite as huge a process as making a full-on indie game, but as a modder you face your own unique problems, ones we don’t always get to hear about. Maybe we should take note of that at RPS. Either way, read on for this week’s roundup.(more…)

When you think of Cypress Hill, you probably don't think of riding bicycles around the mean streets of Rockstar's fictional "San Andreas." But perhaps that's where your mind should go, argues backup singer Michael "Shagg" Washington, who's suing the developer (and its publisher, Take-Two Interactive) six years after the game's release. Washington claims he met with Rockstar in 2003 "to talk about street life for the [then] upcoming game," including a description of his "troubled life in his youth" and specifics about "how the teenagers in his gang rode around on bicycles."

IGN got its hands on a copy of the suit, which explains that Washington didn't see San Andreas in action until this past July, when his nephew was playing it. "The plaintiff had never seen the game. He did not own or play video games," the complaint admits, further explaining, "Upon examination of images of 'CJ' and comparison to his photos from that year and other evidence, it became clear that Rockstar had stolen his image and never paid him."

For Washington's claims, he's asking for 25 percent of Rockstar's profits from San Andreas -- approximately $250 million. Take-Two, unsurprisingly, says the case "is completely without merit" and the publisher "will vigorously defend itself in the matter."
