#gameclub Welcome everyone to the final discussion about CivWorld for the Kotaku Game Club. So we've now played two games back to back: I imagine that some of you are, like myself, beginning to feel a bit "Cived out". I hope, however, that some of you have stuck with it. More »

#gameclub Welcome everyone to the next edition of the Kotaku Game Club. We're going to do a little experiment this month, playing CivWorld, the sophisticated social version of Sid Meier's Civilization. In case you're new to the group, our mission is to play video games together as a group, discussing the narrative, mechanical and human aspects of a game as we experience it. Every week, there will be a column about the section that we just played, and we'll come together and share our thoughts. To be clear, you guys don't need to respond to the column; everyone can bring their own topics to the table. We'll have an official "meeting" during the hour or so after the post is published, so we can have a real discussion. More »

Sid Meier is one of the biggest names in game development, and responsible for the Civilization franchise. While it's seen many sequels and iterations over the years, his latest game, the Facebook game CivWorld, has prompted us to wonder where he thinks the franchise will go from here. We recently posed some questions to the "godfather of civ" via email, and here are his responses...

ah, well most of the people are flying solo in this game, except those who join the brits/egypt/afrcs.
All the other nations are below 3 people and no one seems to be joining them. probably becuase the brits have the the most power, for now. I actually have one of the stronger armies considering that I am only 1 user and I have half the fighting power of a 30 user civilization already. I am considering teaming up with one of the other small nations and crippling the Egyptian kingdom so the brits can stop monoplizing the games economy.

The Firaxis team are taking a few pages from Sid Meier’s great gaming history and placing then in the Facebook. The “social” – or maybe “casual”, I don’t really know – version of Civ, named CivWorld, went into an opne beta today, and it actually looks pretty good. I am basing that on having kicked off a game myself after watching the video which I’ve embedded below. If there’s a problem I can report on up front, well, it keeps timing out, and is maddeningly laggy. Still, it is just a beta, and one that is too popular for its own good, I suppose. Anyway, I am sure we’ll be hearing more about this soon.(more…)

Like chocolate and peanut butter ... no, that's too positive. Like meth and heroin, two of the world's greatest time suckers have combined to possibly (and with a hint of dramatic irony) destroy civilization as we know it. This is all to say that Civilization World for Facebook is available now.

The freemium app attempts to get you checking Facebook more than you already do, by heaping on the addictive "just one more turn" qualities of the Civilization franchise. Some recently featured videos should give you an idea of what makes this game different from your regular Farmville-esque fare.

Your journey into lost time begins on the CivWorld's Facebook page. Don't have a Facebook account? Stay strong, you mighty warrior, for you have resisted what 750 million people could not.

When I play a Civilization game, I want to have absolute power. And, as they say, absolute power corrupts absolutely. My civilization is almost never a happy place to live, but we are aggressive, successful and amongst the most powerful nations in the world. We advance in science and culture faster than our neighbors because I have the ability to change policy on a whim. If something isn't working I don't deliberate with a senate, I simply make the changes...

The two videos (and gallery) below will give you a good idea of what it's like to play Civilization World, the Facebook variant of everyone's favorite 4X strategy title. Think Civ, with cartoonish looks and more involvement from your friends.
