#opinion My Apple iPad 2. Crisp display with a density of 132 ppi. Reacts to multi-touch gestures. Contains accelerometer, gyroscope. Reacts to involuntary shakes in hands. Enough battery life to last majority of a cross country flight. Reacts poorly to excessive, clammy sweating. Does not register uncontrolled clenching of fists/jaw. Eight-megapixel front-facing camera accurately captures wild desperation in eyes, ghostly pallor, but leaves out racing thoughts, mounting dread, cavalcade of head voices. More »

Well, that was a little anti-climactic, wasn't it? For a second there, I really thought that we were going to get an actual sequel to The World Ends With You. But no, we're getting a port instead - an iOS port at that.

As always, the backlash was predictable, and Square Enix didn't help themselves with their countdown or the price point ($20 or $18 depending on iOS device - yikes). But I'm sure Square Enix had its reasons; those reasons being:
  • It's a relatively easy way for Square Enix to continue gauging popular interest in the series.
  • The World Ends With You was originally designed with touchscreen support in mind, which translates nicely to mobile devices (the lack of a second screen for Neku's partner is another matter).
  • It will probably turn a profit. I hear businesses like money.
Basically, it's a way for Square Enix to exhume the series after shoveling dirt on it and moving on four years ago. This isn't Square Enix dashing hopes of a sequel; it's Square Enix raising those hopes up a notch. At a guess, it's hoping to raise The World Ends With You's profile with mainstream gamers in such a way that the sequel will be a bona fide success, and not just a cult hit. Right now, there's no better way to reach the masses than to put something out on iOS, which might answer why the game hasn't found life on the Vita.

The World Ends with You Solo Remix is available now for iPad - and iPhone. We want to be clear that it's not available for "iPad and iPhone," as in, both at the same time, for the same price. Each app is standalone, non-universal, with the iPad version for $20 and the iPhone iteration for $18.

The World Ends with You Solo Remix follows Neku and his partner on the same screen, rebooted in HD and with new music and remixes. The app allows wireless play between iPad and iPhone versions with the multiplayer game "Tin Pin Slammer" and profile exchanges.

Grab it on the App Store today for iPad or iPhone.

Square Enix's The World Ends With You countdown has ended with an official announcement of an iOS port. And yes, it's expensive: $18 on iPhone or $20 on iPad.

The World Ends With You Solo Remix takes the one-character-per-screen gameplay of the DS game and changes it up for iOS, putting both Neku and his partner on the same screen, with redrawn HD artwork and additional music.

You'll be able to see the refreshed Shibuya setting as early as tomorrow: Square Enix lists the release date as August 27 - and that's for the English version.

The countdown linked to The World Ends with You is for an iOS port of the DS game, a leak on the Square Enix's Japanese eShop has appeared to reveal. A listing for an upcoming soundtrack of the game disclosed that an iOS version would release later this year. It also mentioned that the port will feature new music, including arranged tracks from Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Square Enix quickly deleted the incriminating info, but Siliconera has the screencaps for evermore. Hopes of that elusive sequel are dashed once more, although we did warn you.

#rumor Numerous Japanese sites are speculating that The World Ends with You is iOS bound. Earlier today, Square Enix revealed that the game was an iOS title on its online store page for the soundtrack page. The iOS notice has since been removed from the soundtrack page, while the countdown site soldiers on. Thrilling. More »

In about a week, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance will feature characters from The World Ends With You - one of my favorite RPGs of the past several years. In some circles, it's considered to be the prelude to a sequel, and a follow-up has been hinted at.

I feel like I should be happier at that prospect than I am. Actually, I was pretty happy to get more The World Ends With You for a while, even if it came in the form of Kingdom Hearts. Now though, I'm feeling a little more ambivalent.

Some of my reticence stems from the fact that The World Ends With You didn't exactly end on a cliffhanger. It is very much a complete, self-contained story, with very little in the way of loose ends. Even the nature of the Director - the all-powerful being that runs the game at the heart of the story - and the fate of Shibuya is pretty much explained. Short of a prequel, or a whole new cast of characters in Kansai or something, there aren't a lot of places that a new The World Ends With You can go.

Remember The World Ends with You? In a recent interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the he said this about the game: "Now, I still can't say anything... But, something, perhaps there will be something." Hope it's not a social game! [FF-Union] More »

The World Ends With You is, besides being an excellent name for a My Chemical Romance song, one of the few non-Final Fantasy RPGs from Square Enix to obtain cult classic status. The last we heard of a potential sequel to the teenager-infused romp through Shibuya was in August of 2010, when series artist Tetsuya Nomura said "I definitely want to make a sequel."

Fast-forward about a year, and The World Ends With You protagonist Neku is spotted as one of the many cameos during Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance's Tokyo Game Show demo. Now, Nomura has said that TWEWY supporting character Raimu, who never spoke during the original game, will also be in Kingdom Hearts 3D and will be fully voice acted "out of consideration of the future of The World Ends With You series," according to an interview translated by Andriasang.

If that weren't powerfully tantalizing on its own, Nomura also said that "there probably is something" coming in the series' future, though he couldn't speak in specifics at the time. He also laughed mid-sentence, according to the translation, although there's no context provided to indicate whether the laugh was the playful chuckle of an appreciative artist, or the maniacal cackling of a man manipulating the hearts of thousands. Without this vital context clue, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Square Enix may have been listening to your fervent pleas after all - as it looks like cult hit DS adventure The World Ends With You may finally be getting a sequel. Whoa. Now before you freak out and start crying and all that, keep in mind that the existence of this sequel hasn't been confirmed yet... but recent comments from series co-creator Tetsuya Nomura make a pretty convincing argument...

Fans of the DS sleeper hit, The World Ends With You, went crazy when they saw the Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance trailer that came out of this year's Tokyo Game Show. About a third of the way through the video (below), Neku, the hero of The World Ends With You, makes a surprise cameo. Although it's very brief, it was still enough to get fans of the series buzzing. But as it turns out, this cameo may be more than just a fun surprise...
