A portion of an ONM review...

It won't convert the anti-LEGO brigade (what would?), but it's more than enough to make this a worthy Robin to LEGO City's Batman.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes continues its campaign to occupy every single platform, with the release of an iOS version. That joins the existing PC, Mac, PS3, Vita, 3DS, DS, Wii, Wii U, and Xbox 360 versions in a sort of Justice League of near-identical games.

The iOS release costs $4.99 and includes two different control schemes, which means there's a slightly better chance you might find one that's workable, though we're always skeptical of console-to-iOS ports.

Batman and his buddies better get some more corn chips, because a bunch of new visitors have joined the Lego-branded party. Late last week, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes received two new downloadable content packs featuring five additional characters each.

The Heroes Pack DLC includes Nightwing, Katana, Shazam, Zatanna, and the new Robin - Bruce Wayne's son, Damian Wayne. Fans of the DC Universe 'Rogues Gallery' can add Bizarro, Captain Cold, Black Adam, Black Manta, and Gorilla Grodd in the Villains Pack DLC. The ten characters were previously offered as retailer-specific pre-order bonuses.

Each are priced at $1.99 on the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The imperfections are worth bearing with. Few games have production values as high as Lego Batman 2 and although there are many better videogames out there, none captures the magic, the size and the thrills of simple heroism quite like Lego Batman 2.

Some of Lego Batman 2's new ideas work better than others, but at least this isn't just the same old Lego game.

Vehicle Cost Where to Find
Ambulance 100,000 Parked in the parking lot of, you guessed it, Gotham Hospital.

Bane’s Mole Machine 1,000,000 Parked on the north end of the island. After exiting the Batcave on a ground vehicle, cross the bridge directly ahead and take an immediate right turn, follow that road until you see the Mole Machine on the right hand side.

Bat Dodgem 75,000 Behind a building near Metro Station (North).

If you're a fan of the LEGO titles, there's a lot to enjoy in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, and the new bits Traveller's Tales added -- when they work -- work wonderfully. When they don't, though, be prepared to buy a new controller as you hurl the one in your hands through the wall.

Risk-taking deserves at least the reward of acknowledgment. It's a myth that no risks are taken in the long-running Lego series. Last year's Lego: Star Wars III added a surprisingly involved real-time-strategy ground warfare mode. This game tries to make a Lego game work in an open world. Good idea; poor execution.

#review Lego: Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is the best Batman-Superman team-up video game I've ever played, though it's worth mentioning that it is also the only Batman-Superman team-up video game I've ever played. (It might be the only one that exists.) More »

I have a real soft spot for Travellers Tales' LEGO games. They certainly aren't the pinnacle of innovation, and they're not exactly on the bleeding edge of video game technology. Quite the contrary, they are simple and unembellished, using familiar mechanics and tried-and-true concepts. And, of course, LEGO titles all charm with their lampooning of whatever series they're based on, be it Star Wars, Harry Potter or Batman.

In other words, Lego games might not be groundbreaking, but they're generally reliable. In that respect, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes seems no different, though it adds a wrinkle or two.

Consistently charming and funny, and constructed with the same carefully layered challenges that have come to define the series, Lego Batman 2 is an absolute joy even for adult gamers. For kids, it'll be a revelation.
