Assasssin’s Creed IV released itself a significant DLC add-on called Freedom Cry, back in November. Naturally the PC version suffered a last-minute (almost literally this time) delay, but it did eventually emerge at £8/£10. Here’s a strange thing. Later this month the slave-themed separate storyline is getting re-released, this time as a standalone purchase. It’s a chance to say the best word in gaming! EXPANDALONE! Ooh, that felt good.

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry, originally released as a DLC add-on to Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, is launching later this month as a standalone game for PS3 and PS4. Now’s the perfect time to set sail as a master assassin!

In Freedom Cry, you assume the role of Adéwalé, a former slave rescued by pirates and trained in the ways of the assassin. After finding himself stranded in what is now known as Haiti, Adéwalé joins the battle for freedom in support of a slave rebellion… but how will he balance his newfound cause against his obligations to the Assassin Order?

The Standalone Edition of Freedom Cry offers:

  • Brutal Assassin: Beyond an exceptional sailor and pirate, Adéwalé is a melee master, wielding devastating weapons such as his signature machete and deadly blunderbuss.
  • Unique Environment: Port au Prince, Haiti serves as the verdant backdrop as you rebuild the Maroon slave resistance in an attempt to overthrow the deeply-entrenched slave trade.
  • Peril on The High Seas: Command the Experto Crede, Adéwalé’s cherished brig, and improve it as you play through upgrades and collectibles!

Cast off the shackles of oppression in Freedom Cry Standalone Edition! Coming February 18th to PS3 and PS4 for $14.99.

As I continued my new year's tradition of playing the rest of the previous year's Assassin's Creed, I finally played the PS3/PS4/PC-only missions of ACIV. Good timing, if I dare say so. The missions star Aveline, the assassin who also stars in AC: Liberation, the HD version of which I just played right before trying these missions. They're not game-changing. Wii U and Xbox owners can live without the DLC, but they will miss a subtle facet to them that I enjoyed.Read more...

Huh. Well, this is a bit embarrassing. I seem to have – and you’re never going to believe this when I tell you; hoo boy, what are the odds? – misplaced Assassin’s Creed IV’s Freedom Cry DLC. I don’t even know how this happened. I’ve retraced my steps and everything. I just cannot find it anywhere. Wait a minute, Ubisoft, why are you sitting conspicuously in that corner over there, glancing back and forth like you’ve got something to hide? OK, spit it out. Go on now. Ahhh, there’s the culprit: a delay.

The bulk of Assassin’s Creed III’s story DLC was rather silly (though disappointingly self-serious about it), but Assassin’s Creed IV has its eyepatched sights set on much grimmer subject matter. There’s still plenty of pirating to be done, but this time the backdrop is a St. Domingue (Haiti nowadays) ruled by savage slavery. As a former slave himself, new player character and former Black Flag sidekick Adéwale naturally gets involved – though not without some initial reluctance. Given that gaming’s often wont to gloss over this sordid truth of our world, I am hopeful that Assassin’s Creed IV: Freedom Cry will tell a worthwhile tale. The fact that Assassin’s Creed: Liberation scribe Jill Murray is involved doesn’t hurt, either.

Unleash the fury of Adéwalé’s machete in Freedom Cry, a new single-player episode of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag coming to PlayStation Store tomorrow! Fifteen years after the events of Assassin’s Creed IV, the former first mate of the Jackdaw and trained Assassin Adéwalé finds himself embroiled in a battle to free slaves in Haiti.

Featuring a brand new environment in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Freedom Cry plunges you into a world dominated by the slave trade, and confronts Adéwalé with a past he’d hoped to have left far behind.

On Adéwalé’s journey, you’ll free slaves from plantations as well as huge slaver galleons while sailing aboard Adéwalé’s ship, the Experto Crede. Some of those you liberate will choose to help you, whether it’s fighting by your side or assisting by unlocking new upgrades to Adéwalé’s trademark weapons: a wicked machete designed to use crushing momentum to hack through nearly anything and a wide-bore blunderbuss capable of dropping multiple foes in a single blast.

It is up to you to decide whether your mission as an Assassin or the liberation of a community takes priority.

Best begin soon… there is much to do, Assassins!

Folks who criticize Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag for straying too far from the core conflict between the Templars and Assassin's should probably avoid Assassin's Creed Pirates, as the first two words of its title don't really count. Read more...

This doesn’t happen to me too much, given the siren call of the virtual stack of videogames that wobbles atop my mental to-do list each day (oh woe is me, etc), but I keep finding myself drawn back to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. In a ‘secretly looting Spanish frigates when I’m supposed to be working on something else’ sort of way. For several days I have attempted to keep this hidden from my colleagues for fear of getting an earful, but it’s time to come clean (and at the same time at least vaguely justify my clandestine nautical habit): I have a piracy problem.(more…)

Since our first Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer event, Under Control, we’ve seen the AC4 community continue to grow. So we’ve got a new one: The Flying Dutchman!

11071557473_cd9881b752_n.jpg

Starting this Friday, 11/29 and going through Sunday, 12/1, assassins across the community will compete to capture Artifacts and bring them back to their base in a special Artifact Assault mode (we’ve got the breakdown on the specific rules below). During the duration of the event, you’ll be provided with objectives to complete, and each of these objectives will unlock exclusive content.

In this event, Artifact Assault mode will deactivate melee kills, so your only way to kill will be to take aim with the deadly pistol. Team play is mandatory to deliver the artifact to your base, so strategize to support your carrier using Sabotage, and prevent your enemies from using their ranged Pistol attacks!

In addition to the new mode, you’ll have specific objectives with their own rewards to challenge yourself with. Some are individual goals, and others are a wider community goal; check out the breakdown below:

Individual Goal

Capture an Artifact while using the Glimmer ability (6 times)

Individual Reward

1 Patron Picture for each playable character

Participation Goal

Complete a session in the event playlist

Participation Reward

Achieve the title “The Flying Dutchman”

Community Reward

Unlock these exclusive Assassin costumes by reaching the community objective. Find out what the community objectives are by logging in to Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.

Helpful tip! Remember that abilities’ cooldown will be very short and chase breakers will be deactivated, so carrying an Artifact will be much harder. As a carrier, you won’t be able to escape the whole opponent team so anticipate your path and rely on your teammates to protect you.

Gather your team and be ready on November 29th to dive into the second Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag multiplayer event!

A portion of a Nintendo Life review...

The sign of a fantastic open world can be found in its ability to effortlessly suck you into even the most insignificant of activities, and Black Flag excels on that front. Wii U owners looking for an expansive, value-packed adventure should surely set their sails for the Caribbean. There's plenty of gold for the taking.
