Beeswing is a peculiar game. It’s a Zelda and Earthbound-inspired RPG without combat, a personal game that’s absolutely not about its creator, and a rumination on the nature of death that’s not swollen with tearful woe. Also, it’s made out of paint and clay and stuff. The successfully funded (though still on Kickstarter for about five more seconds) project from Sluggish Morss, Blues For Mittavinda, and Will You Ever Return creator Jack King-Spooner aims to tell the hundreds of intertwining stories that make up King-Spooner’s hometown of Beeswing, Scotland. Some stories will raise questions. Some will answer them. Others won’t, preferring instead that you fill in the blanks. I spoke with King-Spooner about his love of death, the need for sincerity in an era of cynical irony, and how he’s, er, “money-shotting” his grandmother’s death in Beeswing.

A portion of an ONM review...

A genuine original, EarthBound may not have the cultural cachet of, say, Final Fantasy, but it's an enduring classic that is quite unlike any other.

This is part of a Nintendo Feed review for Earthbound...

Earthbound is proof that a video game can weather the test of time through its interminable charm, presentation, and tone. If there was ever a game to leave you smiling, this is it.

What is the video game, Earthbound?
Even today, it’s so hard to answer that question.
It was like a group of children taking dolls from a toy chest.
Old dishes no longer used in the kitchen.
Nuts and bolts found inside a toolbox.
Little flowers and leaves from the backyard.
And they were all laid down on the carpet with everybody singing made-up songs.
Ready to talk all day about that world they just made.
That, I think was how Earthbound was made.
Well, I’m a grown-up too,
so I didn’t hold back in adding things here and there,
like putting more angles here,
hiding a secret there,
and sometimes slipping in little mean things.

A portion of a Game Informer review...

Eighteen years after its release, Earthbound hasn't aged a bit. If you let the simple graphics put you off from playing, you're depriving yourself of one of the best games ever released.

This is part of an IGN review...

EarthBound is one of the most bizarre and memorable RPGs I've ever played. It balances its dark undertones with a sharp wit that is still mostly unrivaled today, and is full of ingenious ideas that buck genre trends. Though its punishing difficulty in its early stages might be tough to get past, EarthBound still remains one of the best, most unique RPGs to date.
