District 9's Director Would Still Love To Make A Halo Film, But...
Hollywood director Neill Blomkamp was, back in the day, down to make a Halo movie. He even made a fantastic short, above, showing how it could be done.
Sadly, it was not to be, and the South African went on to direct first the fantastic District 9, and now the looking-fantastic Elysium.
Speaking with IGN, though, Blomkamp reveals that, in a fantasy universe where Microsoft would actually give him free rein over the property - the main hurdle which killed first his own and then Peter Jackson's shot at it - he'd still love to make a Halo flick.
"I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of Halo. If I was given control, I would really like to do that film," he said.
"But that's the problem. When something pre-exists, there's this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film's interpretation of the same intellectual property. Then the entire filmgoing audience has their interpretation. You can really live up to or fail in their eyes. That part isn't appealing to me, but the original pieces are appealing."
Shame. I often wonder whether Halo, which just isn't the cultural force in 2013 it once was, blew its chance at the big time by failing to compromise with guys like Blomkamp.
