I'm not the world's biggest Metal Gear fan, but I can definitely appreciate a good action figure, especially one with a sense of humour. Like this 25th anniversary piece. We caught glimpses of the gag when the figure was first shown off earlier this year, but now that it's finished, we can see it in all its cardboard glory. It was released earlier this week in Japan, and should be around $40. See you favourite importer if you want to get your hands on one. 潜入アクション完全再現!リボルテックヤマグチ「METAL GEAR SOLID PEACE WALKER スネーク」発売直前レビュー![Amiami]

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. If you've never played a Metal Gear Solid game before, the slogan "tactical stealth espionage" probably doesn't evoke memories of baffling sci-fi plots, ludicrous boss fights and the occasional bit of fourth wall humor. For the rest of us, Metal Gear Solid stands as one of the strangest and most iconic franchises of the last generation.

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection wrangles together updated versions of Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater for the first time in high definition. Also included is a console version of the Playstation Portable title, Peace Walker. Add to that the original MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, all for ten dollars less than the price of a standard console game, and you've got a collection approaching Orange Box levels of value.

And while what's included in this anthology is quite impressive, it's the elements that are missing in action that tend to stick out.

Konami has announced a European release date for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, an enhanced assembly of Hideo Kojima's playful, odd and utterly Byzantine stealth saga. (Well, most of it.) It'll be in shops for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 3, 2012.

We've contacted Konami via uncompressed codec to confirm the HD collection's North American release date, which most retailers and rental outlets still list as November 8th, 2011. A Limited Edition packing a 450-page art book will also be available, as will this repeated reminder of what you're getting in the box: Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The Subsistence edition of MGS3 also includes Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

The nested novelty of playing an MSX game inside a PS3 port of a PS2 game sounds too good to resist!

Start erasing all those memories you have with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on PSP, as Kojima Productions is currently updating the game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as part of the MGS HD Collection. Get a fresh taste of said HD-ification in the clip above. Watch out for that helicopter ... thing, Snake!

The coming PS3 HD edition of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was supposed to include Hideo Kojima's cloud-saving gem, Transfarring, to share game saves between the PSP and PS3 -- notice the past tense "was supposed to." Transfarring will only be available in Japan when Peace Walker releases in November, according to Konami's information packet from TGS 2011.

Kojima had previously said Transfarring would be available for every Kojima Productions release in the future, although to be fair, he didn't say where it would be available. Even if Kojima only releases it for himself and he spends the remainder of his days Transfarring, alone, that's still technically available. It's also kind of rude.

We've contacted Konami for clarification.

[Thanks, Marc!]

The HD version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker offers nice bonuses beyond sharper graphics and dual analog controls. Today, Hideo Kojima announced that Peace Walker will feature online co-op (or CO-OPS, as it's known in-game) on Xbox 360 and PS3 via infrastructure mode.

It is possible to play the PSP version online, but to do so requires Sony's "adhocParty" app, and a connection to a PS3 that is using a wired internet connection. This version will be as simple as it is with any other Xbox Live/PSN game. And, Kojima confirmed, it'll run in 60 frames per second even with 4 players.

While you grudgingly admit that you want to buy the games again, now in the HD collection, here's a little perspective: Peace Walker is being sold separately in Japan, but it's just one part of a bundle here.

E3 is nearly upon us, which means developers with announcements waiting in the wings are starting to get anxious about sitting on the news. Kojima Productions is the latest to start laying down tracks on ye ol' hype train, promising some "surprises" for Konami's pre-E3 press conference happening next week.

“We are going to have a few announcements at E3 and we have some surprises, so be looking forward to that,” said Kojima Production podcast host Sean Eyestone, as listened to by VG247. "And we have something special lined-up going on a little bit before E3. So next week, we’re going to have a little special something on June 2.”

Rumors are flying about Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker joining the PSP Remasters program that makes previously PSP exclusive games playable on a PS3, and while Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima continues to claim he's moved on from the Metal Gear franchise, it's hard to believe it's true. It's been almost a year since we've heard a peep about the Raiden-lead Metal Gear Solid: Rising, too.

Predicting what Kojima's up to was complicated earlier this week, when the designer made a series of cryptic tweets about something he'd been working on for a year became "meaningless."

"I cannot bear, and cannot be positive," he said. "What I prepared minutely spending a year became meaningless."

Kojima has not acknowledged what he was referring to in the days since. Any guesses?

It's like this. But bigger!

If you're like me, you don't know where your PSP is. Every once and a while, there's a game that comes along, such as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, that makes me think about finding it.

Really, though, I'd rather play most of those games on my PS3 on a big ol' TV. Sony's finally making my dream come true with the "PSP Remaster" series, essentially HD'd versions of older PSP games. Sony's partnered with Capcom right out of the gate with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Version.

News of these upgraded PSP games originated out of Japan, but the official press release (stating it's "starting in the Japanese market") definitely makes it sound like something we'll see rollout worldwide.

What's cool about the "PSP Remasters," however, is the ability to move between your PSP and PS3 without much trouble; the saves are compatible with one another. Plus, there's 3D support. Er, okay.

Look for more news on this at E3, obviously.

A Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker clothing line?! Yes, Snake, a Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker clothing line. Konami is entering CO-OPS with a company called Musterbrand to produce clothing inspired by, and even based on, the characters and imagery from last year's PSP game.

The items range from logo t-shirts to replicas of clothing worn by prominent characters -- Kazuhira Miller's shirt is included in the lineup, sans jaunty yellow neckerchief. Perhaps that'll be in the next release; Konami and Musterbrand plan to update the line "quarterly and surrounding certain special events throughout the year."

As for the current items: you'll be able to Peace Walk in game-inspired pants starting April 11, when the first pieces will be available online in North America (probably through Konami.com).

Konami is very, very curious about what fans think about its Metal Gear franchise. A "Survey Mission" on the company's Facebook page lets fans opine about nearly every intricate detail about the series, going all the way back to the MSX era. Who knows? Your votes may end up influencing the future of the franchise! But be warned: this is a very, very long survey.

Company doubles earnings over last year.

Net revenues for Konami's Digital Entertainment division were up in its first half of fiscal 2011 (April through September), pulling in 53.1 billion yen ($655.7 million) vs. last year's 51.4 billion yen ($634.7). The growth comes almost entirely from the "Computer & Video Games" group within the division.

The results can be attributed to two games in particular: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Winning Eleven, both of which were cited in Konami's Q1 report as well, and whose sales "progressed favorably," according to the latest report. Because of these games, the PS3 and PSP accounted for 57% of Konami's video game business.

Konami's Japan-only DS dating simulator Love Plus Plus has also proven successful for the company, which said it "could be called a social phenomenon in Japan." Konami is following it up with a 3DS sequel and two arcade games. So there you have it -- love and peace!

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker featured nonsensical Monster Hunter content, so it should come as no surprise that Monster Hunter Portable 3rd returns the favor. Well, we say that, but seeing The Boss in Monster Hunter is a shock no matter how prepared we thought we were.

The PSP port of Monster Hunter 3 will include armor to make your male or female character look like Snake or The Boss, respectively, along with Metal Gear-inspired costumes for your Felyne companions -- who can now hide in cardboard boxes (just like our cats). The cognitive dissonance is a free, unadvertised bonus.

Start looking for a really nice cardboard box! And then ship yourself to Japan in it. Konami is holding a Metal Gear Solid cosplay contest next month, with the winner to be determined at the Tokyo Game Show.

Interested Johnny Sasaki lookalikes (and other Metal Gear cosplayers) can submit pictures here (warning: Japanese-language application!) Konami will select a few of the entries to appear at the publisher's TGS booth on September 18. There, they will be evaluated by a panel of guest judges to be announced later -- as well as the TGS attendees in general, who know a thing or two about dressing up.

The most difficult thing about Metal Gear cosplay is that if you're too accurate, you'll be too stealthy for the judges to notice.
