The latest video from Sony's fictional Vice President of a whole bunch of things has everything you could ever ask for: Tons of Kevin Butler bon mots, some clips of gameplay footage from ModNation Racers, and an appearance by real-life Sony president and CEO Jack Tretton. Unless, of course -- what if Tretton's actually just a highly paid actor as well? Come to think of it, we've never seen him in any context except for ... on the stage!

Check out the video above to see the line between fantasy and reality get blurred before your very eyes. Also, the video contains a sneak peek at Kevin Butler's custom Mod and race track -- both of which will be available to download when ModNation Racers launches next week.

If you have any interest in Sony's upcoming ModNation Racers, you've probably already read our review (and entered our giveaway). You're familiar, then, with our biggest grief with the early review code: obnoxiously long load times. Apparently we weren't the only ones to notice. According to Chuck Lacson, associate marketing manager at SCEA, developer United Front Games is "looking into further optimizing the game via a post-launch patch."

That should be good news for those already sold on Sony's "Race, Create, Share" motto. The rest of us, though? We'll be able to download a playable demo in the next PSN Tuesday update, May 18. The demo will include one track, playable in both single player and split-screen modes. It will also offer creation tools -- and, best of all, any tracks you create and share in the demo will be available in the full version of the game.

I’m happy to confirm that on Tuesday, May 18th, the ModNation Racers Demo goes live and you can finally sample the over-the-top kart racing action and deep creation tools the critics have been raving about. So the question is- “What will you be able to do?

We hope you are looking forward to your taste of our next Play, Create and Share experience.

TWO: IMPROVING LOAD TIMES

There have been concerns online about long load times in the final game and while even though UFG improved load times since the beta, they are looking into further optimizing the game via a post-launch patch!

So there you go! See for yourself next week what ModNation is all about.

Stay tuned for more fun stuff on ModNation Monday!

Alright, stick with us, here: Last month, Sony collaborated with graphic artist Jeremiah Garcia to create a ModNation Racers-branded golf cart. It was supposed to be designed to look like it was created by the indie rock troupe Passion Pit (of LittleBigPlanet 2 trailer fame) -- whatever that means. The cart, which runs on solar power, was then displayed at the Coachella Festival to help promote the green energy movement in collaboration with the non-profit group Global Inheritance. But never mind all of that!

What you do need know to is that you can win this golf cart by entering the "Get the Keys to Your ModNation Kart" sweepstakes over on the PlayStation Blog. You can try to get a better understanding of the vehicle's origins by watching the video after the jump, but c'mon, what more do you need to read then "hey, free golf cart."

What’s up ModNation fans!

This year at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, we teamed up with talented artist Jeremiah Garcia, the super-cool band Passion Pit, and an amazing charity called Global Inheritance to create a one-of-a-kind custom ModNation Racer golf kart!

Check out the video below to see how this kart went from the ModNation Racers championship circuit to Coachella!

This custom, real-life vehicle features:

  • Solar panels to fuel both your kart and PS3
  • 32″ Sony Bravia TV and PS3 to get your game on
  • Custom paint job that melds the art style of Passion Pit with the signature feel of ModNation Racers
  • Sweet headlights
  • Grass carpets (it’s a golf kart!)
  • Crosshairs (stay on target!)
  • ModNation custom license plate graphic
  • and more!

So what could be cooler than watching this kart in action? Owning it!

That’s right, ModNation fans, you could grab the keys to this ModNation Racers kart by entering the sweepstakes.

Good luck and check back on the page for more Passion Pit ModNation Racers kart action.

The guys in United Front Games weren’t just inspired by the art and toys of the Urban Vinyl scene, they loved how the movement gave talented people a new way to express themselves. It gave artists a new way to be seen and to get recognized for their talents.

4597072164_6dfb09c5a4_m.jpg4596456105_04f26bfb24_m.jpg

We hope ModNation Racers will be a way people can share their imagination with the world, just like these artists got to do with vinyl toys.

4597072118_70bbf136bf.jpg

This week, the Artist Spotlight stays in the world of Urban Vinyl to meet another one of its superstars, Huck Gee.

In this Spotlight, Huck shows us some of his favorite toys, boots up ModNation to bring his “Skullhead” character to life, and STILL has time to have a RACE with fellow vinyl artist, Jesse Hernandez!

4596456183_3555fb1695_m.jpg 4597072212_c4e39cb64b_m.jpg

Huck not only has made a sweet career designing toys for companies like Kidrobot, but is one of the few vinyl artists featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was great to see how he was able to realize his vision with the game’s tools and ultimately race it.

We can’t wait for you to do the same.

15 days and counting!

Any ideas on what you’re going to make?

Hi, it’s William Ho from United Front Games! Today, I’m going to reveal some details about the single-player Career Mode in ModNation Racers.

You are Tag, a young graffiti artist turned kart racer who enters the Mod Racing Championship (MRC for short). Tag starts off as a rookie in the Home Tour. As he wins races, he unlocks more rewards and qualifies for higher-level tours that take him to exotic races all over ModNation. Along the way, you’re pitted against the MRC’s Elite Racers. Each Elite has his or her unique visual style and driving style suited to their respective home tracks.

4587013790_e430904e5e.jpg

Jez will school you on drifting and wall riding on stunt track Drift Paradise.

4586389785_b6b6074e05.jpg

Aloha knows all of the hidden shortcuts in the jungles of Lost Temple.

4587014094_965cef958b.jpg

And Diablo is almost unbeatable on the scorched hills and valleys of Launchers Rush.

The Career Mode is both simple and deep. It’s simple in that you can blaze your way to the top of the MRC rankings by placing third or better in most races. We also have “Big Show” races — the finales for each Tour — that require you to finish in first place to qualify for the next Tour. Racking up top finishes also gets you lots of unlocks. You’ll win plenty of parts, stickers, bodies, buildings, props and more to use in your custom creations.

But for more dedicated racers, we’ve also added depth to the Career Mode. Every one of the 28 races has Payoff and Bonus Tasks that you can complete to unlock even more loot. And these tasks demand a lot of different skills. Some require maxing out your Drift and Air Points, so you’ll have to show style as well as speed. Others make you unleash the fury on your opponents, scoring a certain number of takedowns.

4587014796_2b00318f24.jpg

Some of them ask you to embarrass an Elite Racer, such as taking down Hale in front of his adoring fans on the Flaming Jumps Big Show track. Besting the Elite Racers will unlock rare unlocks, plus your embarrassed rival will challenge you to a Grudge Match. These bonus events offer a change of pace from the officially sanctioned MRC races. They can be Score Attacks, in which you out-stunt your rival. Some are One-on-One Races, in which weapons are turned off and you need pure racing skill. And then there are Thug Races, in which you have to beat your rival and his henchmen drivers. Of course, these Grudge Matches unlock even more rare rewards. As if that wasn’t enough, we also have Tokens for you to find by exploring the 28 MRC tracks. Some tokens are easy to find, while others require exploration and careful timing with super hops to get. Once collected, Tokens can be redeemed in the Shop Station for what we call Blind Box Rewards. Inspired by these are randomly selected unlocks that are sure to surprise!

In all, there are several hundred rewards to collect. Only the most dedicated will unlock them all. One more cool thing about the Career: You can — and should — be whoever you want to be. You start off Career Mode as ModNation Racers’ main man, Tag. And you’ll see Tag in lots of funny story cinematics that reveal the history and culture of the MRC. But we want Tag to be whoever you want to be, and you’ll see your custom Mod interacting with all of the other characters in ModNation.

4586388829_14f0e937cc.jpg

Here’s my Mod getting some sage advice from my Crew Chief

Well, that’s all from me for now. In addition to all of the great customization tools and addictive gameplay we’ve talked about in previous PlayStation.Blog posts, I’m happy to say that we’ve got a really fun single-player campaign. It’s simple for players who want to unlock a lot of stuff quickly. It’s deep for those who love replaying campaigns. And the Mods, Karts, and Tracks of the MRC show off a lot of the creative possibilities in ModNation Racers. We can’t wait to put it in your hands on May 25!

What's that? DLC for a game that's not even out yet? Yes, that's how they operate over at Sony -- but don't worry. This isn't an unabashed attempt to nickel and dime you. Rather, PlayStation.Blog will be distributing vouchers through various outlets which will grant ModNation Racers players access to a new character, kart, and all his accessories therein. The racer in question is "Air Raid," pictured above in a sleek, vintage, non-flying biplane.

Keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog to find out where the codes are being sent to. We'll try our darndest to get our hands on a few vouchers for you guys. Because, you know, we love you.

In anticipation for our ModNation Racers release on May 25th, and to celebrate ModNation May, we are going to drop some free ModNation DLC before we even launch the game! So what DLC are we hooking you up with?

I’d like to introduce you to Air Raid!

Get an AIRMEN CAP and FLIGHT JACKET to use on any one of your Mod creations!

Air Raid is a sweet Mod that drives an even sweeter Fighter Plane Kart. If you’re lucky enough to get a voucher for this character, you don’t just get to play as Air Raid, but you can get all the accessories that come with him to create your own “Ace” driver and slick Air Fighter-styled kart.

4585313812_907195291b.jpg

Pilot your Kart with a YOKE steering wheel or take aim with CROSS HAIR hood ornament.

So the big question is, “How do I get a voucher, Chuck?”

We will be giving away a bunch of voucher codes in many different ways, and we will let you know which ones right here on the PlayStation.Blog.

The first site that is hooking you up is our friends at GameSpot! They are planning on doing two code drops, with the first one being on May 10th. They have a limited quantity, so be sure to get in there before they run out.

Expect more hints about where you’ll see Air Raid next soon, right here on the PlayStation.Blog.

Hardcore gamers tend to avoid kart racing games without Mario in the title -- and for good reason, too. Ever since the success of Nintendo's original SNES effort, the genre has been flooded with mediocre copycat shovelware, starring mascots of rather questionable origin. (Seriously, M&M's Kart Racing is a real game.) While it may be easy to write off ModNation Racers as just another kart racing game, I was surprised by how well-crafted and deep United Front Games' debut title is. While it has garnered a lot of attention due to its "play, create, share" gimmick, ModNation Racers stands out as a deep, satisfying racer through its gameplay alone.

For better and for worse, ModNation Racers is cut from a far more hardcore cloth than the typically "family friendly" fare in the genre. ModNation demands skill, and no amount of luck will be able to compensate for sheer ability. The weapons are more balanced than in other games: almost no single weapon is as devastating as Mario Kart's blue shell and lightning bolt. The ability to enhance weapons by saving them adds an appreciable level of depth: do you use your weapon immediately, or save up for a better one? And the shield introduces yet another strategic element to the gameplay. These small additions to the gameplay add up to make a far more challenging (and satisfying) racer.

Hi everyone! I’m back again to give you a quick rundown of our ModNation Racers PSP Demo, which will be available on May 11th to everyone through the PSP Store on the PlayStation Network!

We were so stoked about all the cool things everyone has been saying about the game that we decided to put this demo out for everyone to get a little hands-on experience before hitting the track on May 25th, when the full game will be available. In this demo we included a couple of our favorite tracks, some familiar Mods and their karts, and of course, a sneak peek of our amazing Track Studio.

4584551158_782bd56dc9.jpg

To start you off we dropped in eight Elite and Pre-made Mods and their karts to light up a couple of new tracks, including Lost Temple and Flaming Jumps. Both tracks provide all the opportunities you need for Big Air, Long Smooth Drifts, and lots of weapons to keep the action hot!

Again, with all of your comments about our Track Studio, we had to give you a little taste of creative freedom in our Alpine theme. With so many options for making each track unique and all your own, and so many track parts available we had to limit it in this specific demo, but we think you’ll really get the idea on all the possibilities available in the full version.

4583922461_03d9a56a68.jpg

Thanks again for all of the support you all have shown us. We hope you have as much fun playing the demo as we did making it.

Following this introduction we’ll start dropping some more behind the scenes vids that shows just what goes on “behind the curtain.”

SCEE loves bundles, so it comes as no surprise that Sony is preparing special ModNation Racers packages for both the PS3 and PSP in Europe. The PS3 package, spotted by TheSixthAxis, is rather no-frills, simply bundling the game and a 250GB Slim system for €315. The PSP package is slightly more interesting, including a PSP-3000, a copy of the game on UMD and a ModNation-branded case for €150.

Neither of these offerings have been announced (or are expected to be announced) for America. Expect a review of ModNation Racers tomorrow.

Happy ModNation Monday!

To kick off ModNation May, we are bringing you a new Artist Spotlight!

After seeing some of the gaming industry’s top talent and development icons take ModNation for a spin, our next Spotlight takes us to a completely different scene. ModNation definitely has a unique art style, and if you’ve seen any of ModNation’s behind-the-scenes videos, you might know the look of the game was inspired by the Urban Vinyl art movement.

No one knows this scene better than artist Jesse Hernandez, the man behind Immortal Studios and host of Vinyl Addiction, a show that covers the designer toy scene.

We spent sometime with Jesse, not only get a bit of insight on the scene and to explore his art, but to see how a true Vinyl artist could express himself with the game while having some fun along the way. What we saw was how easy someone can bring their vision to life, even if they are used to a totally different medium.

More Spotlights to come in the weeks ahead! As you noticed, Jeff has hooked us up with a sweet new COUNTDOWN clock! (You can see it by looking over to the right!)

Just 22 days left!

To quote Jesse, “That’s What’s Up!”

It seems United Front Games is taking more than just inspiration from Media Molecule for their upcoming "Play, Create, Share" racer. In fact, it seems to have actually kidnapped the star of LittleBigPlanet and made him bonus DLC for the PS3 version of ModNation Racers.

According to the PlayStation.Blog, early copies of the game (marked with a special sticker) will include a code that unlocks Sackboy as a playable racer. Both pre-ordered copies and first-run copies purchased at retail will feature the bonus.

Sony seems very eager to encourage pre-orders for the upcoming racer, as Sackboy is just the latest addition to an extensive pre-order bonus campaign. Has the tactic worked, or are you still on the fence? Check out a new trailer (featuring Sackboy!) after the break.

Sorry if we got your hopes up, but we couldn't help but highlight Sucker Punch's recent addition to the ModNation Racers universe. Using the character creator, the team was able to whip up a Mod recreation of its PS2 mascot, Sly Cooper. While he may not be thieving on PS3 quite yet, we're glad to see Sucker Punch hasn't completely forgotten about the anthropomorphic, rascally raccoon.

Of course, Sucker Punch couldn't forget to also pay homage to its PS3 hit, inFamous. A new "Artist's Spotlight" video for ModNation features a Mod version of Cole MacGrath and his lightning-themed kart. However, more impressive is Sucker Punch's track creation inspired by Empire City, complete with blast crater. With play-testing and careful attention to detail, this addition could undoubtedly be one of the most polished tracks you'll be able to play in the ModNation online community.

Check out the video after the break.

Greetings all and Merry ModNation Monday,

Just like the past two weeks, we’re kicking the week off with a new Artist Spotlight video. Last week we had the mind behind Twisted Metal and God of War, David Jaffe, give us his uncensored opinion about making games and his thoughts on ModNation Racers (okay, it was kinda censored). If you visited GameSpot at all last week, then you might have learned that we handed a copy of the game to the talented folks at Sucker Punch Productions to see what they could do with the ModNation creation tools.

So what happens when the crew responsible for the PS2 classic Sly Cooper franchise and the recent PS3 hit inFAMOUS decide to have some fun in ModNation?

4547032832_52be0ae824.jpg

Empire City gets rebuilt… ModNation-style!

This is an example of what happens when you combine some time and imagination with ModNation Racers. We look forward to bringing you more examples of this in future installments of the Artist Spotlights video series.

ModNationTV Spot hits the Airwaves

If you caught Peter Dille’s post last week, you know all about Kevin Butler’s new ’stache and uh…orange shorts. The VP ModNation Motivation hits Comedy Central on April 28th during the South Park season finale!

If you liked the orange shorts online, you’ll like them even better in HD!

#screengrab Chevy Chase, as character Pierce Hawthorne, plays but does not create or share with Modnation Racers on NBC's Community, as not too surprisingly seen on the Sony Pictures Television produced sitcom. Thanks for the tip, Will! More »

Guess who's been playing ModNation Racers before its release? Yes, video game bloggers. But what about some more interesting people? The cast of NBC's sitcom Community have been getting their hands on Sony's upcoming PS3 (and PSP) racer. Three members of Greendale Community College (including Chevy Chase!) can be seen playing three-player split-screen in the brief clip available on Hulu (embedded after the break, available only for US readers).

So, how did the cast of this TV series score an early copy of the game? The product placement comes courtesy of the show's producers: Sony Pictures Television.

[Thanks, Marc O.!]

It's official: Kevin Butler is the worst-case scenario for advertisements. Not only do we enjoy the pseudo-spokesman's pitches for Sony products, not only are we completely swayed by visage, but now we actually care more about the ads than the products they're trying to sell us. Take this ad for ModNation Racersomethingsomething -- oh, who cares what it's called, Kevin Butler has a mustache!

Please, Kevin, if you care about us at all, just hurry up and jump the shark so we can go back to respecting ourselves.

#clips Remember your old gym teacher, with the pedo moustache and the too-tight shorts, who'd always prop up one leg on things, giving you an uncomfortably good view of his crotch? PlayStation spokesman Kevin Butler will never forget. More »

Calling all kart racers,

Last year at E3, we unveiled our next installment of the “Play, Create, Share” movement which has been a runaway success since LittleBigPlanet branded a new standard for user-generated gaming. This time we’ve taken the genre-creating formula to the race tracks. We’re putting the power of creation back into your hands to redefine kart racing as we know it today.

Launching on May 25th for the PS3 and PSP, ModNation Racers will fill millions of living rooms with next gen kart racing with crazy obstacles, weapons, and a whole host of new characters to race along with you. You’ll be able to play single player or challenge your friends to compete on race tracks that come built in with the game. But imagine being able to customize your characters, your karts, and your very own tracks with your personal flare. We know our users are extremely creative as we already have more than 2 million user generated levels for LittleBigPlanet. Imagine what we’ll see when you all start making amazing race tracks.

We know something very special happens when you provide the right tools, a sophisticated technology platform and combine them with incredibly imaginative people like yourselves. And the industry seems to agree. Destructoid is calling ModNation Racers the “last kart racing game you’d ever need to own” while PlayStation The Official Magazine touts it’ll be “your next great PS3 obsession.” Even our own esteemed developers such as David Jaffe and Ted Price are singing its praises. We’re confident ModNation Racers will produce an entirely new community of gaming fans and will showcase just how creative PlayStation fans are.

With a game as special as ModNation Racers, you can be sure we’ll be behind it in a big way. Our “Dear PlayStation” spot will premiere during South Park’s Season Finale on April 28th and you can catch it on Kevin’s YouTube channel starting this afternoon. Kevin Butler realizes he’s going to have to go “old school” to get through to an anxious gamer who wonders if he and his self created track have the right stuff. It’s become one of my all time favorites.

We look forward to your thoughts on Kevin’s new look. But more importantly, we can’t wait to see (and race) what you all will create once you get your hands on this ground breaking new game. There’s no audience of gamers more passionate, creative and plugged in than PlayStation Nation. And “Only on PlayStation” will you find experiences like ModNation Racers.
