A solid game of soccer that still manages to fall behind the competition.

Look, we know you Europeans love your soccer football, but GI.biz is reporting that Konami has shipped three million copies of PES 2010 to the region today. Three million -- that's like Halo 3 numbers, people! While we're willing to bet you Euros are chomping at the bit for more pitch play, we're hard-pressed to think PES 2010 needs such a hefty initial shipment -- especially since FIFA 10 has been on store shelves for a couple of weeks now and is selling really well, thus causing us to believe plenty of soccer football hooligans have had their needs fulfilled. Still, Konami expects the game to "become a million-selling title at launch.""Global sales for the PES series to date are over 55.5 million, and we expect a very strong performance from what is easily the best PES in a long, long time," says Martin Schneider, Konami's European marketing director. He credits the rise in quality and buzz around the latest iteration to the fans, who he expects to continue the dialogue with as Konami charges toward tackling DLC for the game next.

Attention, footie fans, Major Nelson has news from on high. That news is this: A demo for Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. We don't know much about the demo, other than the fact that it features multiplayer as well as "incredibly detailed visuals and refined controls and skills." We also know it will eat up one whole gigabyte of your hard drive. Finally, and this is just a guess, the demo probably allows you to kick balls. Hard. Download and enjoy. Add the PES 2010 demo to your 360 download queue

While it's not clear if the jettisoning of Konami IDs extends beyond the confines of Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and into Konami's corporate plans going forward, fans of the stalwart soccer franchise can breathe a sigh (of relief, this time!) as producer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka told G4 that Konami's much maligned authentication system would not be appearing in PES 2010. "We got so many feedback from the users saying the same thing as you said," Takatsuka said, referring to the poor experience relayed to him. "So, we gave up the Konami ID system." That they gave up the system on Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is clear; whether all online-enabled Konami games in the future will abandon the redundant authentication system is still unclear. After a clumsy Metal Gear Online launch, thanks to the Konami ID servers crashing, and Kojima's impression that the system was "not working well," we're inclined to think we won't be seeing it on future Kojima Productions titles either. We've asked Konami to comment on Takatsuka's comment and clarify the status of the Konami ID system going forward.
