Rockstar is making another pretty game, judging from the trio of character trailers released on Tuesday, and why is the internet here if not to destroy pretty things? Youtube user NDstudio69 shows us what Grand Theft Auto V's "Michael" trailer would look like in 2004's San Andreas. Let's hope the other two trailers will get the similar treatment, so our retrospective failure can be complete. Los Santos, a sub-urbane simulacrum of the auto-dependent Los Angeles, is the foundation for Rockstar North's next big heist, Grand Theft Auto 5. The studio's job is to create, not acquire: build the biggest playground yet, and fill it with more, more, more things to do.

The first thing we do is jump out of a helicopter. The mountains and snaking rivers below almost obscure the fact that there's a city just around the corner. Serenity is a rare quality in Grand Theft Auto, though I know the parachute is precursor to an inevitable descent into mayhem.

Later, protagonists Trevor, Michael and Franklin clear out an armored van in the dead of night, having blocked its route with a stolen truck. The police start arriving en masse, in waves, and Rockstar shows me the ease at which you can switch between your criminals. While Michael and wheelman Franklin are pinned down behind cover, you can leap into a manic Trevor and snipe from a distant tower.

The elaborate shootout demonstrates refinements in motion, combat and cover, Rockstar says. The driving is supposed to feel better too - another sign of the expected trajectory of improvement of the Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar North aims to improve its monster of a game at every known level, from motion-captured walking animations and gunplay, ambiance, writing, and story-driven activities outside of the main plot. I haven't seen enough (or played any) to say how it all fits together, but there are three alterations that could put Grand Theft Auto 5 on your radar, even if, like many of Rockstar's subjects, you've been trying to elude a dour life.

We've posted a new set of Grand Theft Auto 5 screenshots as prelude to some preview coverage later today. This batch shows off the trio of protagonists in the midst of a heist, as well as some underwater, likely more legal R&R.

I snapped this from the new Trevor trailer for Grand Theft Auto. I spy a Rockstar Games version of a Juggalo. You know Juggalos? The devotees of the Insane Clown Posse? This can only lead to amazing things. Juggalos, you see, are fascinating. (No word on whether the game will include magnets and rainbows.) I also spotted this game controller in the Michael trailer. Now, look, there are many, many cool things in the world of Grand Theft Auto, but that controller ain't one of them. The trailers premiered earlier today. Catch up with them here if you haven't seen them yet. And go ahead and share your findings. What caught your eye?

The latest event trailers for Grand Theft Auto 5 are available now on the Rockstar site. We say "event" because the internet stops for a good amount of time when these things get posted. Grand Theft Auto 5 drives onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.

We'll have the videos posted here as soon as we can. The Rockstar site currently has a waiting period of 55 minutes to even watch the clips.

Update: Okay, here are all the videos in one place. Michael is above, Franklin and Trevor are after the break.

Rockstar promised new trailers for Grand Theft Auto V today, and here they are. Meet Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, the game's three protagonists. The trailers are all three in one video, so be sure to watch to the end. Michael is a wealthy man battling his cheating wife and a midlife crisis, evidently finding his adventure by getting over his head in criminal capers. Sounds like his character will draw influences from Walter White and Breaking Bad. Franklin is a gangbanger trying to get out of a life of nonstop violence; and Trevor, a brutal drug dealer from the sticks, looks straight up crazy. What else are you guys seeing? Cameos? Celebrity actors? Obvious homages or meaningful music choices? We'll keep breaking this down as we spot things. The game releases on Sept. 17 on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Rockstar released three new character trailers for their latest game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Up top is "Radio Ga Ga" by Queen to go with Michael's debut. Then there's Franklin, sporting the tune of "Hood Gone Love It" by Jay Rock: And finally Trevor polishes the soundtrack off with Waylon Jennings' "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way":

There will be a new GTA game soon. Maybe it’ll be on PC. It has three characters, all of which are violent, sweary men. It has some improvements to the graphics. It’s spent a lot on music and voice-acting. It has the same sort of gags as the last dozen GTA games/expansions, but with different words. It really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really wants to be a movie.

Here are three new trailers, cunningly combined into one, and focusing exclusively on the story rather than on what you get to do. With crushing, miserable inevitability, there is a strip club scene, because there is always a strip club scene. IGN or someone will have a shot-by-shot analysis any second now, but you can watch the plain old videos below if you really want to.(more…)

There's a new Scientology-ish bit of hype for Grand Theft Auto V, and there's a contest attached. What can you win? The fine print indicates you could appear in Rockstar's big fall game: Rockstar Games is holding a “casting call” event giving Grand Theft Auto fans an opportunity to be cast as one of five Epsilon Program members in Grand Theft Auto V. If you are chosen, your features will be used to create one of the five characters in the game. The folks at GTAV.net point out that Rockstar did this for Max Payne 3, too.

There are going to be new Grand Theft Auto V trailers—apparently, one for each of the three protagonists—next week on April 30th, according to Rockstar Games' official site.

Way back in August of last year, Rockstar Games started putting out weird tweets into a feed for the Epsilon Program, a religious cult that appeared in GTA IV. Now, the NYC-based developer is featuring an Epsilonism promo video on their official page. A thread on NeoGAF alleges that there’s in-game footage in the looping promo clip. Do those rolling waves and floating clouds look like they’re the product of Rockstar’s RAGE game-building suite to you? Will one of GTA V’s three playable characters be following the 12 Tenets of Epsilonism. “Directions will be provided in one week's time,” says the post on Rockstar’s official site. Kifflom to that.

It retains the grid format of previous games in the series, showcasing major characters and vehicles from the game. We got a tease of what the cover might look like over the weekend with a graffiti artist painting a mural in New York.

After some recent speculation surrounding a mural unveiling, Rockstar revealed the official box art for Grand Theft Auto 5 this morning. As you can see in full below the break, it does not stray far from the style introduced during the series' PlayStation 2 days.

The art unsurprisingly features the three main protagonists of the game, with Franklin holding the handgun at the bottom, Trevor holding the slightly larger weapon, and Michael taking to the water. Also typical to GTA's style, we can see a rather familiar-looking device in the hands of the woman on the left.

Grand Theft Auto 5 rides onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.

#grandtheftauto You know how Rockstar Games rolls, right? There's no clue as to when we're going to get another glimpse at Grand Theft Auto V. So, thirsty fans have gone ahead and made their own. The clip is made up of still images that have been released for the game, with little bits of limited animation sprinkled throughout. With overdubbed music and vocals responsible for the jokes, it's a little reminiscent of the openings from Monty Python's Flying Circus. GTA + Monty Python… that's a mash-up someone needs to make happen. More »

It’s not all doom and despair in game publishing, you know. While we’ve seen the very sad loss of THQ, and are surrounded by reports of others in lots of trouble, Take Two have just announced a increase in revenues of a whopping 244%. That’s a milliontysquillionty pounds, and it’s in a year without a GTA game to send their shares rocketing. That’s impressive stuff, especially for a publisher known to struggle without Rockstar’s powerhouse on the schedule, and it’s thanks to Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Oh, and the FPS XCOM is still a thing.

Here's another good thing about this current console generation lasting as long as it has: it appears to have reduced fears over next-gen budgets, at least among some parts of the industry. Current-gen budgets have had quoted with ranges between $15 million for BioShock and $44 million for God of War 3, but Take-Two isn't planning for the next-gen of consoles - expected later this year - to be wildly different from current costs.

"We don't have any reason to believe our development budget will change significantly," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick on a financial call today. "If anything, we've become, group wide, much tighter in how we spend our money. It has been the challenge and we've been very focused on it. We can't say specifically, but, no, we don't expect to see a meaningful change in what it costs us to release these top quality products."

Then again, it's hard to put next-gen budgets into perspective when you're the publisher of Grand Theft Auto 5. If the game's launch on September 17 incurs anything like Grand Theft Auto 4 or Red Dead Redemption's marketing, you'll have to take a trip to the Andes to avoid it.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has a release date of September 17, which is later than its original launch window of spring this year. Yes, this is a delay. No, it isn't because aliens beamed down to Rockstar headquarters and possessed the entire Grand Theft Auto 5 development team. At least that's what Rockstar is telling its fans:

"To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they're all nonsense - literally the only reason we've delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be," Rockstar writes in the comments of its launch date announcement.

When Rockstar first posted the September release date, it said, "We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time." While we study the weaknesses of your puny human race, we assume is how that originally ended.

Only Rockstar could get millions hyped to play a game featuring a dude who looks like this.

Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V finally has an official release date, and it's not quite what we were expecting.

After months of touting a nebulous "spring" release period, which seemed to all but confirm a date in the publisher's now traditional release month of May, Rockstar today announced that GTA V will instead be hitting retail shelves on September 17.

In a commiserative post on its official website, Rockstar officials chalked the new release date up to additional development required on the game.

Dear all,

Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

Yours,
The GTA Team

So, hey, we're not getting a May release, but we have an official, locked-in date (which could still slip at some point, but also shut up.) No new trailers or screenshots were released to sate the unwashed masses of the Internet, so you'll just have to settle for the media we already have posted. Sorry about that.

Listings for a PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 have appeared on European Amazon stores, including France, UK, and Germany. The UK and German PC listings are completely separate from the officially announced Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, but on the French store, they all appear under the same "GTA V" product heading.

Rockstar has not officially announced a PC version of the game, despite the online petition begging for one. And an Amazon listing is not absolute proof of the existence of an item. That said, previous GTA games have come to PC after an initial console release.
