Grand Theft Auto 5's weapon and vehicle customization systems will allow players to perform drive-by shootings as unique as they are, thanks to mods that alter how items and rides perform, as well as how they look.

Customizing weapons will play a part in successfully completing certain missions, lead mission designer Imran Sarwar told Game Informer. Extended clips/magazines, scopes, flashlights, suppressors and cosmetic alterations will let players tailor their armory to both their personal tastes, as well as the requirements of whatever gangster stuff they're about to perpetrate.

Likewise, car customization returns, though with reportedly more depth than the system seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. "Some missions ask you to customize vehicles in certain ways, and we have taken vehicle customization in general a lot further," Sarwar said. Cars and bikes can be outfitted with stuff as traditional as new body kits and paint jobs, to more miniscule alterations like changing tire smoke color, adjusting engine tuning and swapping out the vehicle's horn.

On behalf of RPS, I’d like to offer an apology. You may have noticed that we haven’t joined every other gaming blog, Twitter feed, Facebook page, Vine, easily graffiti-ed wall, bus, building, tree, and organized crochet ring in plastering all our available surfaces with each and every Grand Theft Auto V screenshot to hit these mean e-streets. It is, I’m well aware, a travesty. But hey, it looks like Rockstar’s in the market for someone to speed its PC porting process along a little, so I think I care again. Sort of. I mean, the game’s world looks marvelous, expansive, and varied, but – as ever – this one’s grandly thieving fingers are sticky largely because they can’t keep out of film’s painfully predictable pie. Trailer’s after the break.

Today's new gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto V is filled with all sorts of nifty things you can do in the single-player game. You can keep those. All I care about is that last ten seconds of tantalizing multiplayer mayhem. I never finished the story mode of Grand Theft Auto IV. Hell, I only completed a handful of missions before the allure of an open world to play in distracted me from millions of dollars' worth of voice-acting and script-writing. It's the same thing that happened in the older Grand Theft Auto titles, only IV gave me a new way to do absolutely crazy stuff for hours — with a gaggle of complete strangers. I spent countless hours in the game's free play multiplayer mode. Sometimes I would be in the thick of the action, playing impromptu games of "How Long Can We Hold Out Against The Cops?" in the middle of Liberty City. Other times I would climb that big-ass crane in the middle of town and just watch everyone else screw around. I planned entire evenings around watching other people play. We don't know much about the multiplayer of Grand Theft Auto V yet. We know you'll create a custom character. We know there will be jets involved. Grand Theft Auto Online, as they're calling it, should carryover the Crew system from Max Payne 3, so it's likely some sort of gang wars feature will be available. What little we know sounds lovely. But what excites me most is the view in the trailer. The player is standing in a high-rise, watching other folks tear through the city in cars. A jet performs a fly-by. I want to be that guy, sitting in my penthouse apartment, sipping a beer and watching the world go up in flames.

Almost everything shown in today’s gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto V was covered exhaustively in Stephen Totilo’s massive preview from two months back. (Don’t worry; there’s a smaller version.) But today marks the first time that we’re able to see some of these elements in action. So, let’s take a deeper look, shall we? In today’s trailer, you see a bunch of criminal and non-criminal activity being performed and it sure seems like the two categories are going to feed each other. See that bike racing still? I’m guessing that doing stuff like that, shooting at the gun range and maybe even early morning yoga will increase the character’s strength, lung capacity and stamina. So, yes, character customization will go beyond looks in GTA V. That ‘Special’ bar up top indicates the special abilities that each of GTA V's troika will be able to wield: melee rage for Trevor, slo-mo shooting for Michael and a slo-mo driving ability for Franklin . GTA V is the first game in the series to feature the weapon wheel style UI that appeared in Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption. The wheel also shows elements of the weapons customization that will tweak the performance of each firearm. Speaking of RDR, the hunting that made seem that cowboy game’s wilderness seem so alive gets implemented in GTA V, only with fancier weapons. The character-switching that’s arguably GTA V’s main feature gets shown off from 1:28 to 2:01 of the trailer, with the interface at the bottom right of the screen. That bottom section of the character wheel is saved for your Grand Theft Auto Online avatar. Here's Trevor flying the helicopter. Michael grabs the guy they're kidnapping. And Franklin snipes at enemies from a nearby rooftop. As discussed, Michael, Trevor and Franklin will be assembling crews to pull off the in-game heists. The chunk of trailer that runs from 03:54 to 04:16 focuses in on the heist planning and show the recruiting of crew members with different skill sets. Take note of the woman’s mugshot. It’s not quite a lead character but does seem to tease that female character models will be playable in Grand Theft Auto Online. Two options gets presented for pulling off the robbery: loud or smart. Smart happens first and you can see the running count of the take ticking up in the lower right hand corner. What’s most interesting about the Loud option is the fact that Franklin and the boys don’t grab the same objective. They bypass the jewelry in the case and grab cash from a vault Hmmm. Maybe the different strategies will have different objectives. Or objectives might differ according to heists. We’ll see. There’s bound to be even more than the stuff we spotted in the full version of Grand Theft Auto V. But, right now this looks like an upgrade to the kinds of complexity that we usually see in a GTA game.

No, I mean the game. Not actual grand theft auto. Lamar simply misunderstood. A few hours ago, Rockstar surprised their fans with two sweet-looking wallpapers based on three characters from their upcoming sandbox action-adventure, Grand Theft Auto V. On one hand, we have Tracey and Jimmy, children of protagonist Michael, engaging in a little bit of wholesome sibling interaction, and there's also Lamar, protagonist Franklin's partner-in-crime, out on the streets, honing his special skills. You can take a look at the wallpapers in all their HD glory below.Original Grand Theft Auto V Artwork: Friends. And Family. [Rockstar] Questions? Comments? Grand Theft Auto 5 has mandatory installation requirements on both PS3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar says in a Q&A post.

The Xbox 360 version comes with two discs: The first disc is a one-time, mandatory install and the second disc is used to play the game. After the initial installation there will be no need to swap out the discs. PS3 has one disc that starts an automatic installation process, and the game will be ready to roll after that's complete. The PS3 and Xbox 360 installs require 8GB of free space, and if using a flash drive with the Xbox 360 it needs to be a minimum of 16GB, with 8GB free. The flash drive must be, at minimum, USB 2.0 with 15 mb/s read speed, formatted for Xbox 360.
Speaking of swapping things, Rockstar provides more detail in the Q&A about the ability to switch between three playable characters at will in Grand Theft Auto 5, at least when not on a mission.

"And because they have their own schedules, you'll never know what they might be doing - you might drop in on Michael in the middle of a family dispute, interrupt Franklin chatting up some ladies, or Trevor on the run from the law - or whatever else these guys do in their free time," Rockstar says. "How and when you switch between characters when you're not on a mission is completely up to you."

Players won't have complete free will while switching between characters - it's not possible to kill other playable protagonists, Rockstar notes. Grand Theft Auto 5 is due out on September 17 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat." Rockstar Games just dropped some information on Grand Theft Auto V over on its official site—maybe they ARE watching us—and from the sounds of, some folks will need to be clearing space on their consoles’ storage devices. The next GTA installment will require 8 GB of space for both Xbox 360 and PS3: In order to provide the best possible experience for such a massive and detailed world, the game will have installation requirements on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 systems. For Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 will be used for a one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 will be used to play the game. After the install, players will be able to enjoy both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online without any need to switch discs. This initial install will require an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an external 16GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space. If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use. A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance. For PlayStation®3, the game ships on one disc and will install content as soon as you insert the game. The install is roughly 8GB, and players will be able to play as soon as the install is complete. One of the big features of GTA V is the ability to switch between the game’s three main characters on the fly. So, a fan asked if you could hunt down the other characters you weren’t controlling and end their life. You won’t be able to do that—because, duh, you’ll need them later—but there is an interesting wrinkle: In the open world, the characters are meant to be living their own ongoing and unpredictable personal lives, so understandably it’s not always easy to track one of them down in the vast city of Los Santos or the many towns spread about Blaine County at any given moment, but you will be able to find them. Having found them, (or simply after calling them up and arranging to meet them), you’ll certainly be able to hang out with them, annoy them should you choose, and maybe even assault them, but you won’t be able to kill them. They all have remarkable powers of recovery and good health insurance. The game is based on playing all sides of these three characters’ interwoven stories rather than having generic, interchangeable leads, so permanently killing a major character in that way wouldn’t make sense. If a player is determined enough though, they may well find a way to badly injure one of the characters and switching to that character would just put you in the hospital to continue where you left off. There are more teases about the possibility of a PC release and the game’s multiplayer in the Q&A. And a gameplay video is apparently on the way, too.

I only just noticed this sticker—literally, steps away from Kotaku's front door—the other day as I came to work. Savvy Kotaku readers know that Rockstar Games headquarters are just a few blocks away from where we pound away at our keyboards. It almost seems like a bit of subliminal messaging to make sure we're still thinking about GTA V even when there's no new info to report. Sneaky, Rockstar. Very sneaky.

Los Santos is the biggest Grand Theft Auto city yet… and even that is an understatement. Spanning the city of Los Santos and the wide-open countryside of Blaine County, GTA V is larger than Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and the frontier world of Red Dead Redemption combined. What’s more, it will all be fully open for you to explore from the very start of the game.

9163079716_d638cba2cd_z.jpg

Three is the magic number

For the first time in a Grand Theft Auto game, you’re not just playing as one character, but three – each with their own individual personalities and lives to live. You’ll get to play missions as one character, combinations of two, and sometimes all three. When you’re not out on a mission, you can switch between these three leads in real time using the character wheel. While you’re controlling one character, the other two will carry on with their daily lives, so you’ll never know what you’ll find the other characters getting up to when you jump between them.

9163079578_ee46aeacde_z.jpg

Michael is an ex-bank robber, living a comfortable life under the witness protection programme thanks to a deal he made with the FIB (the game’s version of the FBI). But despite seeming to have it all with a big house and pool in the exclusive Rockford Hills area, fast cars and plenty of money, Michael’s dysfunctional family life has made him resent his retirement and he yearns to get back to what he does best.

9160858761_7b36ddfc6f_z.jpg

Franklin is a born hustler working as a repo man for a luxury car dealership – when their customers inevitably can’t keep up with their repayments, Franklin is the hired muscle who will come knocking to take back their vehicle. Spending time behind the wheel of so many high-performance cars has moulded him into a skilled driver who loves to race, as well as an adrenaline junkie; Franklin can often be found in the doorway of an aircraft, ready to skydive over the sprawling Los Santos landscape.

9160858757_6644277351_z.jpg

Trevor is best described as a loose cannon – a one-time criminal associate of Michael, Trevor’s life couldn’t be more different to his ex-partner. Living miles from the city out by the Alamo Sea, his chaotic trailer park life is fuelled by drink and drugs, and joining Trevor could find him doing almost anything – fighting, flying or passed out on the beach dressed only in a pair of grubby underpants. For all his flaws, Trevor is a useful member of the crew – as an ex-military pilot, he can take to the skies in almost any aircraft; handy for the game’s more epic missions. Play to your strengths

In keeping with their own personalities and skill sets, each character has his own special ability that can be pivotal to successfully pulling off missions and heists. As a veteran bank robber, Michael can slow down time during gun battles, allowing for precision targeting of enemies. Franklin has a similar ability whilst driving, letting him take sharp corners and swerve through built up areas without writing off his vehicle. Trevor can harness his anger and fly into a rage that means he’ll take less damage from enemies and can perform a unique melee attack on his foes.

9163079670_88126e2333_z.jpg

You’re the boss

Previous Grand Theft Auto titles have seen you take on the role of a low-ranking hoodlum, making your way up through the criminal underworld by carrying out jobs for shady kingpins. In Grand Theft Auto V, you’re jumping directly into the lives of three established criminals, taking in control of the trio’s individual destinies, as well as helping them work together to plan and execute a series of daring heists. As well as these elaborate missions, you’ll also be able to take on additional side quests, or involve yourself in any of the dynamic events that happen as you make your way through Los Santos and Blaine County – for example, encountering a robbery will give you the choice to help foil the crooks, or you can give them a hand in exchange for a share of the loot.

9163079644_c68ecfd234_z.jpg

There are more vehicles than ever

The roads of Los Santos are packed with vehicles for you to borrow, as well as motorbikes, trucks and supercars – if you know where to look. But the transport in Grand Theft Auto V isn’t confined to the roads. There will be boats and aircraft for you to pilot – and even bicycles, if you prefer a more environmentally friendly way to travel.

9163079600_651e0d941b_z.jpg

There’s a whole world out there

There’s more to Grand Theft Auto V than just the urban sprawl of Los Santos. Beyond the city limits there’s a living, breathing world with its own thriving ecosystem; mountain lions prowl the hillsides, sharks patrol the oceans and fish fill the rivers. As well as the wildlife, the great outdoors is alive with hikers, campers and fishermen enjoying their surroundings, giving the game world greater depth and detail than any of its predecessors.

9160858673_0dce9e7a53_z.jpg

Take some time out

If you want to take a break from planning the perfect heist, there are plenty of ways to kill time in Los Santos. Any of the characters can indulge in various hobbies and pastimes, such as going shopping, practicing yoga, playing golf or tennis, and even taking part in a triathlon. Or, if you prefer something to really get the adrenaline pumping, you can send them scuba diving, jet skiing, base jumping and more.

PS3 is the best place to experience GTA V

Starting September 17th, you can get your hands on an exclusive PS3 bundle – including a 500GB PS3 system and a copy of the game – that will let you experience Los Santos in style. Separate to the PS3 bundle, PlayStation teamed up with our friends over at Rockstar Games to create a custom-designed Grand Theft Auto V Pulse wireless headset, so you can enjoy the game’s many unique radio stations and in-game soundtrack with crystal clear sound.

We’ll keep the Grand Theft Auto V news coming, but in the meantime, check out Rockstar Newswire for all the latest news and announcements from Los Santos.

At first I thought we were getting a subtle glimpse of San Fierro in Grand Theft Auto V, but now I'm not so sure. The bridge in this shot, one of a dozen screens Rockstar released yesterday, doesn't bear enough of a resemblance and the location is out of whack. Hell, I was hoping that colonnade at lower left was a rebooted Jizzy's Pleasure Dome. Alas. That said, have we heard anything about San Fierro in this game? Hell, if Rockstar was saying this world would be bigger than the worlds of Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV and GTA San Andreas combined, you've got to figure S.F. joins the discussion at some point. Check out the other 11 screens below, and get to speculatin' on any hidden meanings or ties to the old San Andreas you see. I spent a lot of time in that game, but I stink at spotting these kinds of clues. To contact the author of this post, write to owen@kotaku.com or find him on Twitter @owengood.
