Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is the next free offering in the "Games with Gold" promotion. Starting October 1, Xbox Live Gold members can grab Capybara Games' excellent match-three RPG without the $15 entrance fee.

Rainbow Six: Vegas is the current deal in the program, and that will expire next Monday. Those still waiting on Halo 3, which was announced as part of the program at E3, will have to hold out a bit longer.

Prepare to begin lining up soldiers and mythical creatures once again. Ubisoft and Capy are preparing a downloadable expansion to the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC releases of Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, called "I Am the Boss."

In I Am the Boss, you are ... one of four boss characters, Azexes, Count Carlyle, Ludmilla or Azh-Rafir, now playable in Quick Battle and Multiplayer. Ubisoft didn't mention a release date for this expansion -- but it did provide Eurogamer with a release date for the PC version of the main game: September 22. We'd heard it was coming sometime before the end of September, previously. If you order the PC game from the Ubishop (currently in Europe only), you'll get the DLC for free.Bosses clash in Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes DLC

For years I swore I didn't like drinking. Friends would try introducing me to various concoctions of juice and booze swearing I wouldn't be able to taste the alcohol, but never to any avail. It wasn't until recently I discovered the joy of "melon balls." Midori, pineapple juice, and vodka created the perfect mix of sweet delicious beverage that would still get me drunk (even if it can be embarrassing to order).

Similarly, I've never been a fan of traditional turn-based RPGs. The slow pace, random encounters, and turn-based combat just bored me. So when the DS Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes was recommended to me by a number of friends in 2009, I was hesitant about the puzzle/strategy/RPG hybrid. Yes, even though they assured me "You'll never taste the RPG!"

Now that I've played its HD upgrade I can safely say that they were dead on, for the most part. Clash of Heroes HD has some RPG trappings: towns, stores, leveling up, and a half-baked story about preventing a demon apocalypse, but all the guff that usually turns me off the genre has been eradicated or at the very least minimized. Random encounters? Completely avoidable. Grinding? Only a smidge. Losing an hour's progress due to not hitting a checkpoint? Never. Turn-based combat? Well, yes, but not in the traditional sense.

Like Puzzle Quest before it, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes marries puzzle gameplay and role-playing elements with much success. But unlike Puzzle Quest -- a straight-up riff on Bejewelled -- Clash of Heroes doesn't ape another game's mechanics. This is a game all its own with a lot of depth and nuance to be discovered...

It's a fantasy land in this week's PSN update. First up is Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes from Capy (Critter Crunch, Sword & Sworcery), the HD port of its excellent puzzle RPG for DS. Instead of abstract jewels creating the gameplay, the game has actual units on the field that can be matched to create better units. Definitely try out the demo.

Also available is Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, which being from Gameloft automatically means it's donning +2 hat of generic, but the title does feature four-player co-op dungeon crawling.

Quest on past the break for all this week's DLC.

Capy's Nathan Vella tells us that the PSN and XBLA version of Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes will finally be available next month. The title has already had a couple of console release windows over the past year, but is now finalized for "mid-April."

Vella says that the game shouldn't be considered a strict port of the DS version released in 2009. Beyond the art assets being redone, he also says that the dev rebalanced the game, taking the units that "sucked" and redesigned them to be functional.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes on PSN and XBLA is pretty much what it sounds like: last year's DS game in high definition on consoles. For me, that alone is enough to ensure a purchase, because I'd make a hobby out of purchasing that delightful game if I could. Similarly, the new online (or offline) multiplayer component in Capy's remake of the DS puzzle RPG is, precisely, the Clash of Heroes gameplay, adapted for more players. Which is enough.

Following up yesterday's announcement that Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is getting an HD facelift and coming to Xbox Live and PSN, Ubisoft has revealed the first teaser trailer for the game. Amidst all of the quoted accolades and plumes of smoke are some actual tidbits of gameplay.

In short: this looks purty.

If, for some reason, you didn't purchase and love Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes on DS -- or even if you did -- you'll have the opportunity to buy the puzzle RPG on two new systems this year, in glorious hand-drawn HD. Capybara Games has revealed a new PSN/XBLA version of Clash of Heroes, with totally redrawn graphics that eschew the 16-bit look of the DS original for more realistic proportions and a generally sharper look.

In addition, new equippable artifacts are being added, and the existing ones tweaked, to improve balance in multiplayer. Even better, you'll now be able to go back and replay segments of the game after completing them. Capy expects to release Clash of Heroes in late summer.

A portion of a Eurogamer review… During the course of writing this, Eurogamer MMO editor Oli Welsh popped up on my MSN to ask me if I thought it was a puzzle, RPG or strategy game. It has enough elements of each that I honestly couldn’t say. What I did do was recommend it to him [...]

Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes If I had my way ... well, a lot of things would be different. When it came to video games, I'd make sure that everyone -- whether they own a Nintendo DS or not -- had a chance to play Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. Now, I know, Might and Magic? Isn't that some long-dead RPG franchise that's probably best left in the ground? Well, yes -- but Clash of Heroes is about as far from any of the other games in the series as you can get. At its core, it's a puzzle game -- a combat puzzle game -- developed by Capybara, the same team behind PSN's wonderful Critter Crunch. Take that game's core mechanic, add a load of clever new ones and build a story-driven experience around it and you have one of the finest (not to mention most addicting) DS games ever.

Having received my copy yesterday, I've only been able to put a few hours into Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes for DS. However, I can already tell that it's going to become an obsession, at the expense of things like other games and interacting with my family. Critter Crunch developer Capy has created an incredibly engrossing game that melds the best aspects of both strategy RPGs and puzzle games.
