Yesterday I got jolly (justifiably) cross about some Facebook-based nonsense “advertising” Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Today I would like to celebrate some really rather excellent nonsense advertising Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The very splendid fake ad below is a gag-free, wonderfully made commercial for Sarif Industries – they behind the beginnings of human augmentation.

If I were Square Enix, and I were planning a promotion for Deus Ex 3, I might just avoid something where I ask gamers to unlock the results. Just for a couple more weeks, maybe. But that’s what’s happening with a campaign to “unlock exclusive content via Facebook”. But apparently rather than employing the techniques of Chippy1337, we’re supposed to do this by “liking” the game, whatever the bloody hell that means. Are they really so desperate for approval? It’s a “slew of assets” that will become available – 90 of them apparently – when an unnamed number of “likes” are achieved. Guh. Let me tell you something…

Oh dear. Internet rotters have done it again, this time turning their attentions to the official website for Deus Ex: Human Revolution and for developer Eidos Montreal. But their hacking is not yer common-or-garden Denial of Service attack or painting pink moustaches on pictures of Adam Jensen – it’s stealing the personal data of some 80,000 registered users. Thanks so much, hackers.(more…)

The most interesting part of Eidos Montreal's Deus Ex: Human Revolution is sandwiched between the opening action sequence and the next major plot developments. The city streets of Detroit stretch out beyond Sarif Industries' headquarters. As the newly mechanically augmented protagonist Adam Jensen, you can explore steam-filled urban avenues and talk with shifty vendors, shaggy street dwellers and other undesirables slinking through the shadows of the city's darkest corners and sewers...

Because I am the luckiest man alive, I spent this weekend playing the first ten hours of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is starting to look like it’ll be the biggest release of 2011. When I finished those ten hours, I went back and played them again, and have finally managed to compress my thoughts into a handy list. Five reasons to be hugely excited Deus Ex 3 and five reasons to be knuckle-chewingly nervous about it await you below.(more…)

PC Gamer have the latest on all the different technical set-ups that Deus Ex: Human Revolution will support. First up, it’ll support DirectX 11, which is great! It’ll also support 3D, which is great if you don’t have astigmatism and don’t mind playing your video games looking like a D-list celebrity with a hangover. Finally, it’ll support AMD Eyefinity, which you can see above, but don’t be fooled! AMD Eyefinity doesn’t just stop at three monitors- it actually supports up to six monitors, which is perfect for me, as I was wondering what to do with my five spare monitors and my five-foot long desk.

Click on through the jump to read what Jurjen Katsman, founder and president of Nixxes (the Dutch studio doing the PC version of DX:HR) told PC Gamer about DirectX 11 support. It will amaze you!(more…)

Adam Jensen has it rough. Not only is he seriously wounded in a work-related accident (security for a biotech firm is risky business), but his injury leaves him no choice but to undergo painful procedures to augment his body with cybernetic enhancements. This is the hero of Deus Ex: Human Revolution...

If you like the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, you'll love the Deus Ex: Human Revolution score -- if this sample posted on the PlayStation Blog is any indication. Composer Michael McCann doesn't actually mention the popular Daft Punk-penned tracks from last year's CGI spectacular, but you don't need a music degree to hear the similarities.

It makes sense, though -- McCann said he was inspired by Deus Ex's "transhumanist" themes, and tried to blend more human, acoustic music in with electronic tones. Vangelis gets a mention, and it of course did the Blade Runner soundtrack, which this latest iteration of Tron also draws influence from.

The first Deus Ex has surprisingly little influence on McCann's soundtrack (there's just one cue he deliberately used), but that doesn't mean we won't hear it. McCann said that audio director Steve Szczepkowski did find "a few clever ways of using DX1 cues, but not in the places, or in the ways, that you'd expect." Intriguing! Our ears will be open when the game comes out in August.

The shimmery outline around key items and interactive objects in Deus Ex: Human Revolution caused a fair bit of consternation amongst Deus Ex fans the other month. Sure, it’s useful, but a big glowy yellow highlight around half the stuff in the world isn’t ideal for immersion, is it? It’s the old ‘loot glint’ argument all over again… Fortunately, the devs at Eidos Montreal appear to have listened to community feedback – you can now turn the bally thing off if you’re so inclined. Below: see what it looks like without glow-o-vision.(more…)

PC Gamer’s spotted a new video that’s gone up on the Sarif Industries viral site – Sarif Industries being the body augmentation corporation that employs Adam Jensen, protagonist of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It’s just unexciting enough to make me aware that I’m posting an advert, but what the hell. Speaking of adverts, have you guys seen the Deus Ex 3 ads we’ve got over here in the UK on the Rustlers range of microwaveable burgers and hotdogs? Take a look. Madness.(more…)

Like much of the other media released for Eidos' upcoming choose-your-own-adventure action title Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the trailer below shows the many choices you have in any given mission. Which will you choose? What's that? Friendship? We're pretty sure that's not an option.

Those who fondly remember Ion Storm's Deus Ex back in 2000 may be interested to hear the upcoming sequel, Human Revolution, is not being produced solely at developer Eidos Montreal. In an interview with Shacknews, game director Jean-Francois Dugas said that Netherlands-based Nixxes is handling many of the duties...

In a recent interview with Shacknews, Deus Ex: Human Revolution director Jean-François Dugas explained that the PC port of the game was being developed in a "partnership" with Netherlands-based developer Nixxes Software BV. Dugas explained that the partnership was born out of a lack of manpower, adding, "It was more of a logistic problem more than anything else and having enough people to make sure it's all on the same level, all the time."

The studio is familiar with helping Eidos achieve its multiplatform goals, having developed ports for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Tomb Raider Underworld, and Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days. Of course, the team also brought Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver to the Dreamcast, making our faith in its cross-platform development abilities absolutely iron-clad.

I’m never quite sure how to take news that a PC version of a game is being worked on by an external studio. Volition recently named the practice as the reason for their dodgy PC ports, and have promised they will be doing all their PC development in house in future. But others use it as a means to ensure the PC version receives the extra attention it requires. Except, well, not by them. Tonight Shack News are reporting that Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s PC code is being worked on by Dutch external studio, Nixxes. But Eidos are very keen to emphasise that this is a shared development, rather than just outsourcing the whole thing.

Well here’s a thing – a big lump of in-game footage of Deus Ex: Human Revolution on Gamespot, narrated by the game’s story director, Mary DeMarle. You can see it below. It demonstrates their “multi-path, multi-solution gameplay” (which was a phrase I don’t think Ion Storm ever needed to use), in the game’s first level. The four “pillars” are combat, stealth, social and hacking, as well they should be. Except of course “combat and stealth are the main pillars”, so that’s what they’re showing now. So what you’ve got is the same level played through three times, perhaps inspired by Kieron’s famous review.

One thing we didn’t write much about in our Human Revolution ultra-wittering last month was the in-game security systems, and the hacking thereof. It’s an oddly tricky one to describe, a sort of a halfway house between Uplink and Pipemania. Definitely best seen rather than described, I think: and that’s something you can do below, via the medium of PAX-attendee shakycam. That’s a portmanteau that’s always irked me slightly – it’s not like it’s the camera’s fault it’s shaking, is it? Develop stronger, more stable arms, game convention visitors. ANYWAY. (more…)
