Hunted: The Demon's Forge Message Board

The future is looking very bright for Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera developer inXile. Very bright indeed. Two wildly successful Kickstarters and one nearly complete, maddeningly exciting game later, Brian Fargo and co have finally found their niche. Or rather, they’ve settled back into the comforting clockwork of an old wheelhouse, an old home. But the road to this point was hardly an easy one. The developer-publisher relationship has always been rather skewed, and inXile’s taken its fair share of licks. Some times have been good (see: The Bard’s Tale), and others, well, others have been Hunted: The Demon’s Forge. The latter, especially, is a sore spot for Fargo, but he’s been burned by various publishing arrangements far more than once. He and I discussed that subject, whether Kickstarter is inXile’s permanent solution to that problem, and tons more after I saw Wasteland 2. It’s all below.

When I started playing Hunted: The Demon's Forge, I was surprised at how much fun I was having. At first glance the dated visuals, awkward animations and cumbersome menus make Hunted look like bargain bin fodder, but there are some fantastic ideas here. It combines the melee action of a hack 'n' sla...

Your first hour in the desperately dark world of Hunted: The Demon's Forge is not going to be a pleasant one. The preface-free introduction doesn't exactly instill a sense of literary excellence. The characters presented could generously be described as "grating." Combat is limited to a fairly uninspired mix of plain ol' shooting and plain ol' stabbing. There's a troubling realization that the game contains items, but no inventory, which everyone should be able to agree is absolute madness.

Slowly but surely, however, the game's oddly-shaped puzzle pieces begin to plop into place. See, most of the issues observed above are never really remedied -- instead, developer InXile Entertainment seems to have made an unconventional and fascinating decision to thoroughly nurture a small handful of other genuinely great ideas.

This launch trailer for Hunted: The Demon's Forge doesn't do the game too many favors, unfortunately, as it's a little dark and too chaotic to show off much of the co-op-centered gameplay. But the song choice makes up for those faults -- it's just plain inspired.

This article over on Gamasutra is a little skewed by its title, “How RPGs Were A 30-Year Detour”, because inXile’s president Matt Findley doesn’t actually say that specifically, but it’s interesting and provocative all the same. What he said was this: “Well, you know, we analyzed the long history of video games. I think these games always wanted to be action games at their heart. I think all those old turn-based games, it’s just that’s all the technology would allow.”

Controversy! Some thoughts on that below.(more…)

As you inch along in the darkness, you reassure yourself that the noise is just the sound of a game designer rubbing his cello bow all over a kitchen pot. But even if that's really all it is, isn't that still kind of scary?

While the latest Hunted: The Demon's Forge behind-the-scenes video is sadly devoid of Lucy Lawless, it is positively packed to the gills with the game's monstrous baddies. From the brutish minotaur to the svelte assassin, there should be plenty to keep players hacking and slashing.

When it comes to fantasy RPGs, nothing is more important than the setting in which all the looting takes place. Judging by this new dev diary, Hunted: The Demon's Forge seems to have this fact on lockdown, thanks in no small part to the inclusion of some user-generated dungeon tools.

Bethesda’s is a crown with many likely jewels at present – Brink, Rage, Prey 2 and of course Skyrim are all mightily impressive prospects in their own distinctive rights at present. And then there’s Hunted, whose gleam is a little harder to discern right now. A welcome break from the post-apocalypses which dominate Bethesda’s shooter range, in broadest terms it’s Diablo making the beast with two backs with Gears of War. An appealing concept – hackery and slashery up close and personal, with a strong co-op emphasis. My kind of thing, nominally.(more…)
