While we slept off traditionally fatal turkey venoms or, you know, did non-festive things, Mojang took over Disneyland this weekend. No, no, Notch and co didn’t buy Disney (yet; that won’t happen for another couple years, at least), but they did host MineCon at Disneyland Paris. And though I imagine there was plenty of magic and childlike wonderment involved, they did – at certain points throughout the show – put on their business Mickey Mouse hats. Shockingly, Minecraft got the bulk of the attention during those rare instances, and 1.5 – now dubbed The Redstone Update – was the main attraction.

You may be wondering how a fruity, tangy dessert could possibly run Minecraft, but we're not talking about that kind of pie. No, we're referring to Raspberry Pi, the $35 computer that fits in your pocket. Mojang has created a modified version of Minecraft: Pocket Edition for the tiny computer, appropriately titled Minecraft: Pi Edition.

Pi Edition will support multiple programming languages, allowing users to modify the game directly, which Mojang says is "a bit like being Notch, Jeb, or Nathan, but arguably more fun and less stressful." Minecraft: Pi Edition will be available as a free download "soon."

The Minecraft Reality app for iOS devices tracks the living world around you and then places your Minecraft creations directly into it, to scale and in cool, augmented reality 3D. The video above does a better job of demonstrating how this turns out than we could with flimsy words.

Minecraft Reality is developed by 13th Lab, with the blessing of Minecraft developer Mojang. On top of checking out your creations alone, Minecraft Reality allows you to save them in specific locations for others to look at, at their leisure. The app runs $2 on the App Store and is universal, though optimized for iPhone 5.

We expect to see a range of blocky Gundams, Pokemon characters and, of course, a deluge of dicks in our real-world spaces soon. We know you so well.

The Minecraft 1.5 update for PC, titled the Redstone Update, is due to hit in 2013 and mainly addresses - wait for it - redstone ore. The update gives redstone variable signal strength and introduces a new capacitor block with one input and one output. Combining these two objects creates weighted pressure plates and pressure-sensitive detector rails, among other items, Gamespot reports.

The Redstone Update brings improved minecarts, including special tracks to unload unwanted livestock and an option to link carts together. The update also adds a daylight detector that can be hooked up to a capacitor to create a solar-panel-type device, a new ore based in the Nether that can be used in capacitors, and fireworks for New Year's Eve. Whether this means 1.5 will hit on New Year's Eve remains to be seen.

Mojang is also fixing a few bugs, including the south-east rule. The south-east rule is a glitch that affects some objects based on their compass coordinates, causing them to gather, generally, in the southeast quadrant of an area. This fix may impact some designs that exploit the south-east rule.

The Redstone Update is the first in a series of single-feature-focused updates. Mojang plans to launch one of these every two months.

Ed Fries is a former VP of publishing at Microsoft, Ouya advisor and the creator of Halo 2600 - he's got quite the resume. He also founded FigurePrints, a company known for making real-life recreations of your in-game content, like statues modeled after World of Warcraft avatars. Now FigurePrints is recreating Minecraft worlds.

If you're interested, you'll first want to install FigurePrints' world exporter, compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows XP. Once you've installed the exporter, you can select a portion of your MineCraft PC world and upload it to FigurePrints where its artists will re-create your lovingly-crafted game world into a physical model. Then you only need to place your order and wait impatiently for the box to hit your doorstep. As for price, FingerPrints says "replicas of Minecraft worlds significantly vary in cost," based on the size of the area recreated.

I had a choice of headlines for this – perhaps that Minecraft has become the ninth best-selling PC game of all time, that it has now shifted over 8 million paid copies in total or that Notch heralded that last with the cryptic phrase 69I960EHE0A4A0IVG0EHE02500R4R0G1T30PLJ00V6V0EHE0V1U01V10U5U0VGV0V4R. But I think you’ll agree, Minecraft outselling The Sims 2: Pets is the news we’re really here for.(more…)

Minecraft continues to unearth new players, with its PC version now up to over 8 million sales. Mojang owner Markus 'Notch' Persson revealed the milestone on Twitter, which comes almost three months to the day his game broke the 7 million barrier.

With sales of the XBLA version now over 4 million, our maths bods tell us Minecraft can now boast over 12 million sales on PC and Xbox, at least. That's excluding the Pocket editions, which collectively are into seven figures too.

If you haven't yet got that lots of people play Minecraft, you should know it recently toppled Modern Warfare 3 as the most played game on Xbox Live. Of course, a certain other Call of Duty may have something to say about that in the very near future.

Minecraft XBLA's Adventure Update 1.8.2 is live and kicking, probably because it's fending off nasty, blocky bugs. The 1.8.2 Bug Fix Title Update doesn't have a release date yet, but it contains dozens of fixes and adds recipes for Golden Apples and Golden Pumpkin Seeds. Fixes include chest lids not working correctly, glass panes and iron fence hitbox problems, tools taking damage in creative mode, and many more. Hit the break for the complete list.

4J Studios provides more insight on its Twitter feed, adding that the Golden Apples and Pumpkin Seeds are crafted with gold ingot for now, but gold nuggets are on their way and the recipe will use those once they're in-game. Additionally, players will eventually be able to climb vines, and the next update will add villagers.

In other mining news, sales of Minecraft XBLA's Halloween Skin Pack (again, that sounds pretty gross) raised more than $500,000 in under two weeks for the four charities chosen by Mojang, 4J Studios and Microsoft Studios: Block by Block, SANDS Lothians, Child's Play and Macmillan Cancer Support.

"The Minecraft Halloween skin pack" sounds like a disgusting bag filled with blocky bits of flesh. The real Minecraft XBLA skins are almost as gross, but in a more charming, less messy way.

The Halloween skin pack includes 55 new, creepy character designs donated by developers around the world, and it runs 160 MS Points ($2). All of the proceeds benefit four charities chosen by Mojang, 4J Studios and Microsoft Studios. Bonus side note: For the first time in Minecraft XBLA's history, some of the skins feature capes.

The Halloween skin pack goes on sale on October 26 and will be available through November 26, the day following the end of Minecon 2012 at Disneyland Paris. Do the creep-ah.

If you've yet to truly grasp the power of Minecraft, let this just sink in: Minecraft is now more popular than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox Live. According to the latest Xbox Live activity report from Major Nelson, Minecraft was the most popular game on the service for the week of October 15.

That puts it above Modern Warfare 3, which now sits at number 2. It also makes it more popular than several other huge names, including FIFA 13, Black Ops, Halo: Reach and Battlefield 3. The only other Arcade game to even break the top twenty is the recently launched Happy Wars, Xbox Live Arcade's first free-to-play game.

If you took a break from Minecraft to read this post, feel free to return to chopping down trees, building roller coasters or whatever you were doing.

#0x10c Forget about fantasy and those armless creepers. Mojang's next game is going sci-fi. We've already seen one glimpse at an early build of 0x10c, but that one didn't have sound. The newest video uploaded by Mojang CEO Markus "Notch" Persson lets you hear the blasters and computer interfaces, as well as offering a glimpse at what first-person action looks like in the game world. Minecraft 1.4, AKA the Pretty Scary Update, arrives on October 24. Until then, the 1.4 pre-release is available now for download on developer Mojang's site. Remember, this isn't the public update, so if you'd rather avoid the risk of installing-at-your-own-risk then you only have to wait five more days.

The Pretty Scary Update brings with it a namesake amount of changes and additions, including a Wither Boss, Witch creature, direct access to server mods, anvils for repairing and combining items, and a whole lot more on top. The Minecraft Wiki has a thorough tab on what's popped up in prior snapshots, and so offers an extensive look at what players can expect from 1.4.

In addition to the upcoming 1.8.2 update for the Xbox Live version of Minecraft, there's also a third character skin pack set to come to the popular sandbox game. Like the first two packs, this one will contain quite a few new skins for Minecraft characters from other media, including content based on the Half-Life series and Awesomenauts. Sure, you could dig a hole as a dwarf, but why do that when you could do the same thing as a headcrab zombie?

There's no information yet, unfortunately, on when the update or the skin pack are coming out; both still need to finish going through Microsoft's certification system. But we'll expect to hear from Mojang and Microsoft as soon as the skins are ready for purchase.

Ubisoft is breaking new ground in uncomfortable marketing, by promoting Far Cry 3 with a free Minecraft map and texture pack. The free pack, downloadable on PC October 26, adds Far Cry 3 locations and characters like "Vaas, Jason, and Citra," allowing you to keep Far Cry 3 and its December 4 release date fresh on your mind while playing a completely different game from a different company.

Ubisoft also sent over a series of images depicting Far Cry 3 promotional art with Minecraft imagery added. The actual playable content will be the other way around.

Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade is getting its massive, game-changing update tomorrow, known colloquially as the Adventure Update. Update 1.8.2 brings creative mode, hunger, sprinting, new mobs, new food and new biomes, among many more fixes and additions.

The Adventure Update just passed Microsoft certification and is set to launch Tuesday, October 16, port developer 4J Studios tweets. Check out the complete change list on the Minecraft wiki.

After this update, 4J Studios may consider adding an Xbox-tailored mod system, or "taking the game in a different direction from PC."

This is basically staggering. Have you ever considered building a ship in a bottle? Well, this is sort of like that – except someone essentially decided to build a bottle around a full-sized war galleon. In short, this is all of  World of Warcraft‘s Azeroth (read: no Outland, Northrend, or Pandaria… yet) recreated to 1:1 scale in another slightly popular game that prominently features “craft” in its title. Apparently, that herculean construction effort necessitated 68 billion blocks. And yet, one person managed it all by their lonesome. But how?

2 Player Productions is laying the foundations for a December 7 release of its Minecraft documentary. Speaking to Eurogamer, Minecraft: The Story of Mojang director Paul Owens said that while an exact date hasn't been settled on, December 7 is the aim.

After getting the documentary funded on Kickstarter back in March 2011, 2 Player also committed to a similar production for Mojang's upcoming Scrolls. The Oregon-based production company has a strong history of gaming documentaries, having made videos for Double Fine, Sony, and Penny Arcade among many others.
