How many copies of Minecraft have you bought? I think I’ve bought it a couple of times on PC, and definitely once on mobile. Although this 12 million is just PC sales, it seems. Despite being four years old, in just the last 24 hours it’s sold 13,947 copies. At full price (€19.95) that’s £236,880 in the last day! Even accounting for discounts, when you guess at Xbox and mobile sales, it puts total revenue somewhere near the £200,000,000 mark.

Meanwhile, Notch is flying helicopters into Jaguars because he likes the scraping sound, before blowing up a castle and climbing his caviar-and-fois-gras mountain. Cheers, Kotaku.

The problem I have with Minecraft’s biomes is the word “biome” (which means “climate zone”, btw). It’s too close to “Boom”, which means I end up singing “Biome, biome, biome, biome, I want you in my room!” whenever I read it. Mojang’s problems with the biomes, however, are a bit less childish: the rules used to create variety in Minecraft’s world generation means there’s often unrealistic placement of zones. Desert and snow bump up against each other, there are uncrossable oceans separating continents, and there’s not enough variety between chunks. Version 1.7 seeks to change those rules.(more…)

Minecraft has the ground covered, and Starmade does the whole “Minecraft in space” thing that was inevitable. But what about that bit in between? Where the ground isn’t quite the ground, but it’s definitely not space because there are no tweeting astronauts? That part of the world needs a game, if only to bridge the gap. That’s where Sky Nations floats along: in it people will live and die and laugh and love and play a block-based multiplayer game in the sky. And how do they stay up there? Airships.(more…)

Minecraft will step into its fifth year soon. Damn. It just really reveals how fast the years are passing by. SamalotPlays created a beautiful time-lapse video that shows how the game began to shape up from its early stages—including additions like the day/night cycle to rideable horses—and continuing through to the game we have today. Markus "Notch" Persson, creator of the legendarily successful Minecraft, has shelved his spaceship management/space exploration/space-y stuff game 0x10c, but a group of dedicated fans wants to bring it back... kind of. 0x10c was put on ice back in April due to a "creative block," but Persson told viewers of a Team Fortress 2 livestream this week that it would never be coming off said metaphorical ice, as he had no future aspirations for it. Naturally, some fans were upset. Others took it upon themselves to make sure the game was made, even if they had to do it themselves.

Shane Dalton, Project Lead of the 0x10c revival, told USGamer that he and his team "didn't really look into" why Notch cancelled the game. "We just sort of looked at the project and were like, 'Okay. This is a community project now.' We're not using any of his old code, his name or anything," he said. Dalton's team also isn't using the game's name, and instead will be referring to it as "Project Trillek" for now. Dalton and his team also have no plans to monetize the game once it's released.

All that seems to be staying the same between 0x10c and Project Trillek is Persson's story and core gameplay concept, where humans who have woken from hypersleep in the year 281,474,976,712,644 AD must navigate space and manage their spaceship, which features a fully-functional 16-bit CPU.

Update: It has come to our attention that the team behind Project Trillek does not plan on using 0x10c's original story concept. The text of this article has been updated accordingly.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson (aka Notch) participated in this year's 7DFPS developer challenge, a week-long game jam centered around first-person shooters. Persson's entry is Shambles, a Unity-based shooter that drops players in the middle of a zombie apocalypse with 50 bullets and 100 health points.

Players don't just hunt zombies in Shambles, though, as soldiers drop weapons and civilians drop health packs when killed, turning survival into a balancing act. As with other 7DFPS games, don't expect Shambles to offers hours of entertainment, but it's a nifty way to pass a little free time.

App development studio Dekko aims to blur the line separating the real world and the blocky surreality of Minecraft with DekkoScan, an upcoming iOS app that allows users to import 3D objects into Minecraft and render them as in-game sculptures.

Dekko team member portemantho details the app's creation on Reddit, explaining that it uses technology originally built for the augmented reality racing game Tabletop Speed. The app uses an iPhone or iPad's camera to scan a 3D object, then "cubifies" the results using existing block types within Minecraft. Enterprising hackers previously produced similar results using Kinect.

DekkoScan has been submitted to Apple for approval, and should appear in the App Store shortly.

Minecraft creator Mojang has been accused of trademark infringement by miniature golf franchise operator Putt-Putt over the use of the Putt-Putt name in user-created Minecraft worlds. Game creator Markus Persson disclosed the details of the accusation, dismissing Putt-Putt's claim as the company "being silly."

The legal notice's whimsical letterhead ("Let the FUN begin!") belies the seriousness of the claim, which alleges that "Mojang AB's use of the Putt-Putt name has benefited Mojang AB to the detriment of Putt-Putt." Putt-Putt further demands that Mojang "immediately refrain from all use of the Putt-Putt trademark in connection with [Mojang's] business."

Putt-Putt's claim is accompanied by a single screenshot of Google search results featuring user-created "Putt-Putt" worlds within Minecraft.

Responding to Eurogamer's request for comment, Mojang's lawyer Alex Chapman issued the following statement:

"I think there is clearly a misunderstanding here as to what Minecraft actually is. It's a game that, amongst other things, allows people to build things. Mojang doesn't control what users build and Mojang doesn't control the content of the videos users make. Suing Mojang for what people do using Minecraft is like suing Microsoft for what people do using Word."

Yes, I am reporting on an iPhone app, but one that has interesting implications for the PC version of Minecraft, as well as science-fiction. While drifting through the Reddit rapids this morning, I happened upon DekkoScan and did a double-take. It’s a phone app that allows you to take pictures of objects and turn them into Minecraft maps, which seems like something that should already exist. It’s currently awaiting Apple’s approval (aren’t we all), but soon you’ll be able to photograph anything and cram them into Minecraft. Great! Now I have to worry about a wizard taking my photo and turning me into a hill in Minecraft. The horror of being hollowed out, chipped away, or reformed into a penis statue is creeping me out.(more…)
