Tau Commander Comes to Dawn of War II

The Tau are one of the coolest armies in the Warhammer 40k universe. Sure, they aren't as iconic as the Space Marines, but their mix of highly complex battlesuits and tribal warriors has always intrigued me. Fans of the faction have lamented their exclusion from Dawn of War II, and while that isn't changing yet as far as competitive multiplayer or campaign is concerned, those who love The Last Stand mode have a lot to look forward to with the all-new Tau Commander...
Relic Turning Retribution's Last Stand Mode Into A Standalone Game

If I were the God Emperor, I’d be smiling at Relic. The (mostly) real-time-strategy development studio announced plans yesterday to release a cheaper, standalone experience based on Dawn Of War II - Retribution's “Horde” mode, The Last Stand. Called The Last Standalone, it's now available on Steam.

The goal is to introduce new players to the core game, Retribution, via this cheaper, tighter and less complex experience.

“We saw this as a unique opportunity to introduce new players to the Dawn of War franchise as well as expanding the player base for the already popular Last Stand mode,” producer Jeff Lydell said in the announcement press release.

This should appeal to deal hounds, too: the game has debuted at $9.99. Obviously, it won't require a Retribution install, but if you do have Retribution, it’s safe to skip this. The Last Standalone is ripped straight from Retribution. If you don’t have Retribution and want to buy The Last Standalone, you’ll be able to “upgrade” the game to Retribution at a “reduced price.”

One of the questions I have, however, is whether The Last Standalone will receive updates or content that Retribution won’t--or vice versa. I have a feeling that Relic won’t be giving players the shaft, but I've sent an email to publisher THQ just to be sure.

The second Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II expansion, Retribution, launched yesterday. Or today. Or tomorrow. Or never. Or whenever. All at once. Depends on where you are and where you download from, basically. With a bit of luck, you can purchase Relic’s sci-fi RTS/RPG mash-up from the likes of Steam and Direct2Drive right now, and at retail any day now. Should you, though? Well, that’s where the following words come in. Consider me your Dreadnought of truthiness. (more…)

My, Dawn of War games have been an almost annual thing for nearly a decade now, haven’t they? I have no issue with that – any year with a bit of new Only War in it tends to be a better year for it. 2011 brings us Retribution, the second Dawn of War II expandalone and the first to make the Imperial ‘Impy Goo’ Guard a playable race in the sequel series.

In fact, it’s out next week, on March 3. I’m playing it at present, and at some point before then will arrange my thoughts on it into a series of syllables, real and invented, in order to convey some sort of opinion. In the meantime, here’s the intro video for the game. Short and chest-thumping, and very much in keeping with the proudly absurd bombast of the game. (more…)
