Given how much I don't care for Alien 3, I don't mind that Gearbox Software and Sega are essentially telling David Fincher to 'eff off in today's long-awaited updated on Aliens: Colonial Marines, calling the project "a true sequel to James Cameron’s classic Aliens."

Sega's killed off Alien projects in the past, so it's no surprise many had assumed the worst when so long passed without an update on the shooter. With a is-it-or-isn't-it Alien film coming next year, a prequel of sorts from the masterful Ridley Scott, the game is coming back to life.

Aliens: Colonial Marines sounds like what we'd been hearing in the past, but yeah, reading about drop-in, drop-out multiplayer across a squad of four has me...uh, excited again. You'll also get to customize your marine with "get perks, new weapons and new looks for your squad."

Series fans can look forward to exploring Hadley’s Hope, the Sulaco and LV-426.

What's less fun is learning we'll be waiting a while to dig in; Aliens: Colonial Marines isn't scheduled for release until next spring. Fiiiiiine.

We get a lot of weird stuff in the mail, it's simply one of the hazards of this profession. Any given day, we have to be prepared to take delivery of a miniature diorama, a personalized strait jacket, a check for $200, or maybe a pile of meat, hair and teeth? Sometimes, it's a dirty doll head.

Wait, what?

Now, getting something like this in the mail might be a frightening experience for the casual games journalist but remember, your pals at Joystiq are pros. And by pros, we mean to say that we asked Twitter what it was. Some of you suggested it might be promoting Gearbox's announced-over-three-years-ago FPS Aliens: Colonial Marines. While that seemed like a crazy assumption, it turns out the name written on the back, Rebecca, is the actual name of that lovable scamp from Aliens, Newt. Furthermore, the return address on the package is from one Ms. Rebecca Jorden, Newt's full name. Here's what Wikia has to say about the doll:
Casey was the favorite doll of Newt's. Casey was reduced to nothing but a head when she was discovered on LV-426. Casey was lost when Newt was abducted in the sub-basement reservoir in the Hadley's Hope settlement. And if that's not enough proof of an imminent E3 re-reveal, Kotaku says it has an appointment to see the game, so ... case closed, we guess. We're mostly looking forward to seeing why Colonial Marines was put on the backburner for so long ...

... mostly.

With Ridley Scott returning to the Alien universe with the is-it-or-isn't-it-an-Alien-prequel Prometheus, it's not surprise Sega is ramping up its efforts to capitalize on the license, too.

Work reportedly continues on Gearbox Software's squad-based Aliens: Colonial Marines, while Creative Assembly--yes, the Total War dudes--are separately working on an Alien game, Sega revealed today.

The news broke when UK government minister for communication, culture and the creative industries Ed Vaizey send a tweet out about visiting Creative Assembly and seeing the game. That's not exactly traditional rumor territory, so Sega's hand was forced.

Sega then confirmed the game to CVG.

Creative Assembly is best known for strategy games, but with Sega making direct comparisons to the Dead Space franchise, an action game seems likely. Creative Assembly isn't completely foreign to the genre, having worked on Viking: Battle for Asgard. That one was not exactly well received, however.

It's clear the Alien game is a big deal for the studio. Creative Assembly's website has already been updated to reflect development on the Alien project and disclosing this is a brand-new division. "New team," reads the hiring call-to-arms on the company's website. "New console project. Alien IP. Now hiring."

Also, hey, Prometheus better not suck.
