The following information comes from a Nintendo Power interview with Warren Spector…
WS: “The real power of games isn’t in figuring out what a designer wanted me to do or in executing a maneuver the designer insisted I execute. The real power of games is in solving problems the way I want to solve them, to [...]
A portion of a USA Today interview with Shigeru Miyamoto…
USA: The 3DS has some new wireless features, correct? Could you talk about how that could be used in games?
SM: It’s a little bit hard to explain but obviously, Nintendo is very interested in the idea of networked devices and user-generated content and we think that [...]
“Thinking about the [Donkey Kong Country] series you had Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong but the player never had full control over both of them at once. That was what we wanted to change. We wanted to make it so two players could play at the same time which would have been a first [...]
We told you yesterday about a Wired interview with the director behind Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, which happened to feature talk about Miyamoto and Nintendo in general. Thanks to Shiggie, we now have that snippet from the issue, and we can see that there’s some Zelda love in the film!
Damnit…now I have to [...]
Miyamoto was front and center for all those that checked out the recent edition of ‘Aftenposten’ newspaper in Norway. As you can see, Miyamoto’s E3 showing, as well as Nintendo’s lineup in general, garnered some major attention the world over! Thanks to Pianogamer for the heads up!
You may have read our interview with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto earlier this week - where we talked about everything from the 3DS to Retro's reboot of Donkey Kong Country to the Wii MotionPlus-enabled Zelda title, Skyward Sword - but why not watch the video also? You can marvel as the voice of Nintendo's Bill Trinen magically appears of Mr. Miyamoto's mouth thanks to the magic of editing and, as a freebie, you're also listening to the thoughts of one of video gaming's great creators. Find it just after the break.
A portion of an IGN interview with Shigeru Miyamoto…
IGN: To start us off, what happened to the Vitality Sensor?
Miyamoto: It’s actually progressing quite well. We could have shown it here at E3 if we wanted to, but the environment here isn’t really suited to that game. E3 is pretty exciting, and that’s a device [...]
Some 5+ years ago, I ran a Nintendo site on Blogger that eventually turned into GoNintendo. Back during those early days, I slept outside the Nintendo World Store in New York City to have a chance at meeting Shigeru Miyamoto. Sleeping outside on the street was a small price to pay for meeting [...]

When Nintendo's Bill Trinen failed to master the new Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has no choice but to teleport in to help. More »
The following are snippets of a Miyamoto interview with EDGE magazine. We’ve heard some of these snippets in the past, but I’ve only posted the more interesting/unheard snippets below.
The way he (Yamauchi, former Nintendo president) selected games was just like this: we had some new ideas, I approach him and share them with him [...]
There are few figures in modern videogaming as renowned and respected as Shigeru Miyamoto. This is the man, after all, who has been the creative backbone behind Nintendo’s success for the last 30-odd years. Shigeru Miyamoto is not only responsible for creating some of the most beloved videogame characters and franchises of all time, such [...]
Miyamoto has made it pretty clear that he doesn’t want any big story elements in Mario games. That hasn’t stopped members of the dev team from trying to sneak things in, and that was just the case with Super Mario Galaxy 2. As a matter of fact, Miyamoto had a talk with Galaxy/Galaxy [...]
“Unless you’re careful, there’s a tendency for games like Mario that can be played by children to gradually become childish. Those making the game tend to unconsciously make them that way. Taking how Mario’s line can be scripted as an example, they even propose to write, ‘Where’d my mommy go?’ When someone in their fifties [...]
The video linked below features all sorts of talk from Miyamoto on topics that we’re dying to learn more on. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Vitality Sensor, Zelda Wii and more. I doubt he says anything that is truly revealing, but I still want to know what he’s saying! If anyone knows German, [...]
We posted a Miyamoto video interview earlier today, but it was all in German. Looks like we have some rough translations of what was said. Don’t take this as a word-for-word translation, but just a rough idea.
Miyamoto on the art shown at last year’s E3…

“In love with computers, Iwata entered the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1978 to study computer science. This time he used the money he received as a graduation present to buy a Commodore PET — with integrated monochrome display, keyboard, and cassette tape reader, it was the world’s first all-in-one computer.
“He would store his programs [...]
“Before the launch of the Wii hardware, we at Nintendo had already come up with the idea that the Wii is the machine that’s going to be hooked up with the television set in the living room of the household. And so then the family members become the basis for us to think about [...]
“As soon as we’ve finished a project, I always have regrets about what we could or should’ve done. But then there are these great ideas that we can utilise with future projects, one way or another. Some people might say Wii Music is a good example. It’s been said that it could have sold [...]
- working on another 3D Mario for the Wii reminded Miyamoto of the Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask days
- Miyamoto says Majora’s Mask was made in order to take advantage of the 3D framework of Ocarina of time
- Miyamoto says that when you make a new game, you can spend up to a full year just [...]
Nintendo's online offerings are free (and somewhat limited) as of now, but that might not always be the case. According to statements from Shigeru Miyamoto to Edge, Nintendo is still considering the nature of its online business.
"Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realise is the core [online] business structure," Miyamoto said. "Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be."
Miyamoto denied claims that Nintendo isn't "proactive when it comes to its online strategy," noting that the company intends for all consumers to be connected through the Wii at all times (Nintendo even initiated a reward program for those who help others get their Wiis online). He did admit that "Nintendo hasn't been very proactive in developing such online activities as an MMOG."
None of this is any confirmation that Nintendo's going to start charging for some kind of pervasive network, or that we'll see an Animal Crossing MMO at E3. But it is definitely interesting that the company is showing an interest in online services beyond the somewhat barebones setup it has now.
