Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime sounds like a great idea -- a four-player download where you bust ghosts with your pals -- but the thrill of the license wears off quickly and you're left with a $10 title that's ho-hum at its best and incredibly frustrating at its worst. Developed by Behaviour, th...

Welcome to another XBLA in Brief. This week, we take a look at Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. If the trial version is anything to go by, you'll be glad we did the legwork for you. In other words, it just doesn't seem very good. It does have a sweet theme song though, and that has to count for something, right?

Continuing its dev diary series, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime's second video focuses on New York's unruly specter population, who just can't seem to leave the living alone, and the new school of Ghostbusters charged with stopping them.

We'd have to say the most impressive thing about this dev diary for Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime isn't the information contained within, but rather the speed and efficiency with which producer Jonathon Moses delivers said information. He could be fast-talker of the year!

Atari’s lightweight Ghostbusters game Sanctum of Slime arrives this month on March 23rd, which is eight days after Shogun 2, five days after both Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Homefront and two days before Crysis 2 and The Sims Medieval. So many games! So close together! And lest we forget, games, like breasts, are best when they are close together. If you told me this time last year that I’d be enjoying this many games so close together, I don’t know what I would have done. I’d probably have hit you.

Anyway, perpetual news machine Blues News notes that Sanctum of Slime has a new multiplayer trailer out, and I’ve trapped it in the Ecto-Containment Unit after the jump. (more…)

Regardless of what you think of the actual gameplay presented in the multiplayer trailer for Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime, we think we can all agree on its one major fault: There's so much stream-crossing going on, but it's not causing any explosive side effects. What gives?

Atari is being very careful with Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. The game features four wannabe 'busters and takes place sometime after the events of the second film. With talk of a third film (thanks in part to positive reception of Ghostbusters: The Video Game), Atari doesn't want to back itself into a corner. Thus we get Sanctum of Slime, a dungeon-crawler with an emphasis on action.

Let’s say you hear strange noises in the dark, or spot a mysterious figure roaming your house. Who you gonna call? Exactly! But don’t be surprised when a new team of Ghostbusters rings your bell. The old crew is tired of lugging their proton packs all over NYC, so they’ve decided to hire a group of rookies to help out – especially with a huge wave of paranormal activity hitting the city.

Introducing Allan, Bridget, Samuel and Gabriel – the new ghost bustin’ team here to clear the overwhelmed city of New York from an ectoplasmic infestation. They packing a new arsenal of cool prototype weapons that Egon has been designing over the past decade. Egon’s and Ray’s studies on paranormal entities have revealed that ectoplasm can be charged with different sub-atomic charges, making ghosts weaker to different energy frequencies. To keep it simple, there are three different weapons, each stronger against a particular kind of enemy. You can identify them by their color. Match the color of the weapon’s beam with the color of the enemy and you’ll get a sure bust. These new weapons, together with the enhanced Proton Stream, completely disintegrate minor entities so you don’t have to worry about tossing your trap every two minutes. However, when facing larger menaces, the trap will be your only surefire solution.

Disintegrated ghosts will usually leave a small trail of ectoplasmic residue that can be absorbed by the team’s proton pack built-in Energy Syphon. In some situations, the energy left behind by the ghosts will be so powerful that they can power up some of the other energy consuming features of the Proton Pack, like the Ectoplasmic Shield, the Power Enhancer or Nano-massage Health Recovery system.

Now it’s time for you to jump in and take control of one of these rookies and start clearing New York from these hideous ghosts and horrific specters. Face the threats by yourself with the help of an A.I. controlled squad, or team up with up to three friends to blast your way on either local or on-line multiplayer.

Atari has revealed that its downloadable action game Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime will be available on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network on March 23, a Wednesday (so we're assuming the PSN launch will actually be March 22, a Tuesday). No mention was made of the PC version's release -- but then, you can only fit so many platforms in a Twitter announcement.

Sanctum of Slime sees the original Ghostbusters replaced by a band of dual-stick streaming rookies. Like good New Yorkers, the core team apparently thought it best to sublet out this adventure.

Atari is still shaking things up at the ole corporate HQ, it seems. Current CEO, Jeff Lapin, has resigned from the position he took almost a year ago to this day. Lapin, who spent time at both Take-Two and THQ prior to his Atari gig, will be succeeded by Jim Wilson, Atari's now-former president and deputy CEO, Gamasutra reports. Lapin leaves the company on good terms, it seems, stating that he believes Wilson's "leadership and management skills" will help drive the company forward and that he wishes "Atari and its employees great success."

Wilson's been at Atari a bit longer than Lapin, having first signed on to work with the company back in 2008. Since then, Atari has lost a lot of money (though it's trying it's hardest to get back into the black) and re-focused its efforts into producing "fewer but more profitable games." Atari board chairman Frank Dangeard isn't sweating the future, though -- Wilson "has the board's full support as he continues to drive new goals of growth and success" for Atari, he says.

Riding on the slimey coattails of last week's announcement, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime received the full media push this morning, with a handful of screens and a debut gameplay trailer (found after the break). Alongside receiving assets, we learned that the Wanako-developed game will follow a team of rookie ghostbusters "on a brand new paranormal experience" in New York City.

As teased in the trailer by a giant, sentient subway line, players will take down ectoplasm-filled enemies and "gigantic bosses" with several characteristic ghostbustin' weapons (insert "don't cross the streams!" joke here). It seems the old ghostbusters -- and the actors that voice them -- will be sitting this one out. We reached out to Slimer's representation for more information, and will update this post if we hear anything back. Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime should arrive on XBLA, PSN, and PC "this Spring."
