*crag*! Last night I started writing something about my hopes for Battlefield 3, and one of the points in it was “they better have huge tank battles across massive plains”, and that’s precisely what they’re showing now. I should have finished it up and I’d have looked like the prescient games genius that I am.

It looks seriously good. Not sure about those tank interior bits, though. It’s all on PC, and it looks miraculous. There’s also a brief multiplayer trailer over here, showing some of the stuff from Paris multiplayer maps. Big built up urban maps for multiplayer: also in my unfinished articles. I mean I basically make these games happen by imagining them. (*Imagines infinite Stalker*)

EA is bringing Battlefield 3 to DICE and has teased some of the new features we'll get to see -- specifically, features not simply anchored to the single-player experience. EA and DICE are finally ready to talk multiplayer and by the sound of this missive on the Battlefield Blog, multiplayer is getting quite a few improvements.

"Operation Métro" will be the multiplayer map available on the show floor at the LA Convention center at E3 next week and will highlight several new features in the multiplayer component: going prone; being able to temporarily disable vehicles (as opposed to just disabling them permanently the old-fashioned way with rockets); mountable weapons; "lay down suppressive fire and more." DICE is also adding a Team Deathmatch mode to the game, though for the life of us we can't imagine why. Does anybody even like Squad Deathmatch in Bad Company 2?

Finally, the single-player will sport a co-op campaign, though we're not sure if it's two-player or four players or what. DICE is also preparing an online destination called Battlelog that will let you "manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, use voice chat and follow your friends' progress in real-time, and more."

[Thanks, Alan L]

Oh, you two. I’m unsure whether the endless spat between two of the world’s biggest games publishers is healthy. With Activision currently occupying the coveted Most Hated spot at the top of the publishing ladder, once so impressively held by EA, you can see why there’s rivalry. “We’ve sacked another entire dev team! Take that!” “Well then! We’re going to cancel a game people were really looking forward to!” And so on. Currently the battle is over the world-dominating presence of Call Of Duty, and EA’s belief that plucky Battlefield can depose it. Slap! Pinch!

We don't know about you, but every time we see the word "pwned" written or, heaven forbid, spoken aloud, a combo-wave of douche chills and nausea washes over us. So know that to bring you this news, we're breaking out the vomit-proof keyboard cover.

EA UK has an unfortunately titled web video series by the name of EA PWNED, in which the go-to pairing of attractive female and balding male cover the gaming industry in video format ... with British accents ... and an exclusive, uncritical focus on all things EA. But you, like us, are going to have to suppress that gag reflex if you want to see a whole lot of high-definition footage of Battlefield 3, straight out of DICE's Swedish headquarters.

There's discussion of the audio in the game, the engine, the art and, perhaps most notably, the creation of the Back to Karkand map which updates one of Battlefield 2's most popular maps with the impressive new Frostbite 2 tech. You can find the full video, and a handy side-by-step comparison of the two Karkand maps courtesy of Reddit, after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Having previously covered off on two of the most revered maps in Battlefield history, Strike at Karkand and Wake Island, today the team has revealed new information and concept art from the two remaining maps in the Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand limited edition, the Gulf of Oman and Sharqi Peninsula. Head on over to http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/ to check it out...

Not content with just one major E3 media event, Spike has announced that it will also be airing the Electronic Arts press briefing. Entitled "Gamechangers: EA 2011 Preview," the event is scheduled to take place at the Orpheum Theater in LA on June 6 at 12:30pm PT (3:30pm ET) and will air commercial-free on Spike.

The highlight of the event will be a new, live demo of Battlefield 3. Also planned are looks at Mass Effect 3, Madden 12, FIFA 12, Need for Speed: The Run and "other unannounced projects." Also, if you squint hard enough, you just might spot some Joystiq bloggers in the crowd.

Like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 before it, Battlefield 3 will be arriving at retail in a regularly priced "Limited Edition," encouraging folks to pre-order the game before its planned fall launch. The UK will get the "Physical Warfare" version for the same price as the regular edition, which includes a small arsenal of weaponry, as well as access to the "Back to Karkand" multiplayer expansion -- four remade maps from Battlefield 2.

As this edition has only been announced for the UK thus far, it can only be ordered from GAME and GameStation for now, running the standard £39.99 on 360/PS3 and £34.99 on PC. That said, when EA initially confirmed the "Back to Karkand" expansion, DICE community manager Daniel Matros noted that it would be available worldwide via an in-box code.

In the meantime, peruse the full "Limited Edition" armory after the break.

Don't let the excitement of the upcoming Battlefield 3 beta cause a serious error in judgment. Community site BF3blog points out that the "beta keys" on the site BF3nation are a scam -- also noting that the site's owners were also involved in a previous phishing scheme. EA has allegedly been trying to shut down the site, but has so far been unsuccessful.

When the Battlefield 3 beta is upon us, trust that you'll definitely hear about it from your buddies at Joystiq ... oh yeah, and the rest of the internet. It won't be something that'll fly under the radar. In the meantime, assume anything that involves BF3 beta keys is a scam. We've contacted EA for a direct quote on the subject.

Enough people have "liked" EA's Battlefield 3 on Facebook that a new video has been unlocked, and this time it's actually a commentary track to the 12 minutes of gameplay revealed back at GDC. Executive producer Patrick Bach shares all kinds of insights and secrets on the track, from the fact that attack plan map is actually just a placeholder to the return of a familiar series star.

A lot of the commentary is pretty promotional (yes, Patrick, we know we're seeing lots of effects and that they're courtesy of that amazing Frostbite 2 engine), but there are some good bits in there and, if nothing else, it'll give you an excuse to watch that gameplay video again. You can see a YouTube version of the footage with commentary after the break.

#gloriousmasterrace Patrick Bach, from DICE, the developers of the Battlefield series, certainly knows the way to a PC gamer's heart: tell them that, for once, the PC version of a game won't be a crummy port, but will be the glorious, lead platform. More »

Just before GDC, DICE walked us through a 12-minute gameplay demo of Battlefield 3. You've already seen bits and pieces of it, but now you can watch the entire thing. (Protip: When you go shopping for new PC parts later this year, bring this with you.)

Speaking on Nvidia’s Geforce-promoting Geforce site, Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach has stated that he believes “the world has moved on” from consoles being the focus for the future of gaming.

“So for our target of what we want to hit, we are now using the more powerful platform to try and prove what we see gaming being in the future rather than using the lowest common denominator, instead of developing it for the consoles and then just adding higher resolution textures and anti-aliasing for the PC version. We’re do it the other way around, we start with the highest-end technology that we can come up with and then scale it back to the consoles.”

Fighting talk.

The first part of the latest Battlefield 3 trailer is an elegiac re-cut with a sprinkle of hyperbole (who says "unnervingly beautiful" anyway?). The last part is all "whooah" and "yee-hawwww" -- you'll like it.

This Battlefield 3 trailer is a fancily-edited-up selection of footage that we’ve seen before. Until the end, where there’s some stuff we haven’t seen before: base-jumping, jet-fighting, tank-battles, and a city on fire. It’s only a glimpse. “Glimpse” is a funny word.(more…)
