Beyond being a game we're quite fond of, Q.U.B.E. is also profitable as of right now. Well, okay, a little bit before now, as the folks who funded the project -- the major league indies who comprise the "Indie Fund" -- have already recouped their expenses, according to a recent blog post at their official site.

"We are happy to announce that Q.U.B.E., the first Indie Fund-ed game to market, took only four days on Steam to generate enough revenue for Toxic Games to repay the full investment amount of $90k," the post reads. The project was originally supposed to cost just $42K, but the eventual budget ballooned to $90K, paid out in several big chunks. Thankfully, that investment paid off with 12K sold copies since the game launched last week.

The post also notes that Toxic Games is already discussing the possibility of moving Q.U.B.E. "beyond PC," though it's unclear whether that just means "to OS X" or to somewhere even more enticing (XBLA/PSN, perhaps?). We've asked Toxic Games for more info, naturally.

#qube How much does it take to make an indie game? How long until one makes a profit? The metrics on this kind of thing are always mysterious but a new post on Indie Fund's official website gives some enlightening information with regard to the first game funded by the small-developer investment collective to see release. Mass Effect 3 is yet another entry in EA's stable of PC games that can't be purchased via Steam. At least "initially," that is, according to BioWare community manager Chris Priestly, who posted a variety of FAQ answers on the EA division's forums late last week. "During initial release, Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time," he said.

Unsurprisingly, this also means that all PC versions of Mass Effect 3 will also require EA's Origin service to launch the game -- regardless of where you buy it -- just like Battlefield 3 before it. And despite EA's wording, which implies the game may end up on Steam at some point after launch, we're doubtful that'll be anytime soon.

Alongside the confirmation that ME3 won't end up on Steam, Priestly goes on to list the issues his company sees with launching on Steam ("restrictive terms of service," BioWare claims). Given Steam's ubiquity across the PC gaming landscape, not to mention the vast majority of its clients not complaining about said terms of service, we're gonna go ahead and wager that the terms aren't changing anytime soon.

#masseffect3 In today's edition of, "News You Saw Coming a Mile Away", BioWare's Community Coordinator, Chris Priestly, has told Mass Effect fans that Commander Shepard's epic quest to save Earth from the Reapers will not take place on Steam due to the set of "restrictive terms of service" which also led to EA pulling titles like Crysis 2 and Dragon Age 2 from Steam last year. If someone had told me I'd be spending a peaceful night this week in a stark white room playing with bright blocks, I'd have run before they could wrap the straightjacket around my shoulders and throw me into the back of a windowless van. Instead, I spent a few hours positioning primary-colored cubes around a vast test chamber from the comfort of my own home -- with full mobility of all my extremities -- and I enjoyed my time immensely. Toxic Games' Q.U.B.E. (Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion) joins other puzzlers as the crossword of the plugged-in generation, stimulating spatial, physics and reasoning skills in a direct way that shooters can't touch (or shoot).

Updates to Nation Red have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

- A new Bridge Barricade map has been added to the on-line coop and local coop maps
- Players can now join on-line games already in progress (Drop-In). You can also start a multiplayer game by yourself and let other players join. Works both with Public and Friends-only games.
- Added a new Stats section, visible when pausing or at the end of a game. Quickly visualize the number of kills/boss kills each player has, most-used weapons, current maximum killstreak, unpicked perk bonuses, etc. In on-line coop, the host can pause the game to compare player stats.
- Now supports up to 3 seperate Auto-Perk lists. For example use List #1 for Barricade games, List #2 for Free Play and List #3 for achievement hunting, etc.
- Now supports unlimited blood. To enable, set the 'number of blood patches' slider in the game options to 'unlimited'. Can be used to cover the entire arena in blood.
- Dynamite powerup now has a much larger damage radius and deals damage to up to 5x more zombies compared to regular grenades.
- Added perk icons (beta). Perks are divided into 7 icon categories: Armor-related perks, Health, Powerup, Scoring, Targeting, Dexterity and Offense perks.
- Moved achievement-tracking display. To track an achievement, go to the in-game achievement list and mouse click on any achievement.
- Player indicator circle now shows health status, ranging from green->yellow->red
- Grenade icon added next to the player grenade indicator
- Now supports loading all game assets from zip files for faster game startup
- Ghost perks in Auto Perk mode now stack quicker.
- Auto Experience perk now gives 2x more Xp
- Added new achievements:
- Pinpoint: In a single Free Play game, survive for 5 minutes without your accuracy dropping below 50% in the new stats section.
- Killstreak One, Two and Three: Reach a killstreak of 1000, 2000 and 3000 (refer to the new stats section). A Killstreak is obtained by zombie kills without receiving any damage.
- Increased visibility of crosshairs. Added a console option 'cursor2' to change crosshairs to a different type.
- Snare now operates more smoothly in multiplayer games
- Firestarter now gives Xp when the perk alone kills a zombie
- Several small bug fixes

The PC version of Dustforce, the sweeping side-scroller from indie studio Hitbox Team, is set to launch January 17 for $9.99 on Steam, with a Mac update to follow soon after. Dustforce has more than 50 disgusting levels for your janitor to spruce up, and will have an online leaderboard, 4-player local multiplayer modes and a soothing original soundtrack.

Dustforce received an honorable mention from the IGF for Excellence in Visual Art, so even if cleaning isn't your thing, we bet you can still enjoy some pretty, stylized gameplay.
