I haven’t played the original Payday, so I asked the current guests at RPS manor t' provide an opinion for me. “It be good, but cruelly tough,” claimed Craig Pearson, Scottishly. “It really be Left 4 Dead,” he added, Welshly.
Said Adam: “” Said John: “” Said Cara: “”
Therefore me opinion a Payday be that it be good, but cruelly tough. It really be Left 4 Dead. 'n there’s t' be a sequel later this year, with the now Starbreeze-owned Overkill once again on dev duties.(more…)

I think it’s more a a polite corporate takeover (IF SUCH A THING EXISTS) than a masked, gun-toting robbery, but the fact remains that Syndicate Riddick developer Starbreeze be awaiting shareholder approval as it bids t' buy Overkill Software, they a PayDay: The Heist. If it all goes ahead, Overkill shall continue enhancements a the first game while also working on a sequel, which must feature supernatural elements 'n go by the name HeistGeist. Starbreeze have plenty in development already, with three internal teams working on three separate games, including “free-t'-playish” Cold Mercury, the self-funded P13 'n one other mystery title.

Ooh, I’m in PSA mode: bank-robbing FPS PayDay:The Heist be free on Steam this weekend, 'n 50% off if ye choose t' buy it. Dan Gril loved it, 'n I concur that it’s an excellent mash-up a gaming 'n film influences: everything from the opening sequence a The Dark Knight t' Heat be mined 'n tossed into a Left 4 Deadish co-op run 'n gun. It’s kind a the perfect weekend game, if yer idea a the perfect weekend be shooting policemen 'n being able t' pillage t' sleep at night afterwards. 'n if ye’re not planning t' play this, why not tell us what ye be up t' that’s so important that ye can afford t' ignore a free game? It better be damn good.(more…)
The heist genre seems t' have been arrested before it even got going: Subversion be serving a ten-year stretch as the new brig Tycoon; Monaco’s team be keeping it be head down 'n hoping for an early release. Only Payday: The Heist be at large, having stolen the nascent heist genre blueprints from under their noses. Here’s Wot I Think.(more…)
3 out a 5
Payday: The Heist be probably the closest we'll ever pillage t' Heat: The Game, 'n that be a bit depressing. t' be more accurate, Payday be basically The Best Part a Heat: Done as a Game With Middling Results. Payday be about heists, often heists very similar t' those seen in Michael Mann's Los Angeles crime classic. Four players pillage together, take down a bank, or a jewelry exchange, or a cash-flush meth lab, fending off waves a cops 'n rival criminals while achieving specific, randomly-generated objectives. it be a neat idea that could be amazing be it more rich in atmosphere, storytelling, 'n excitement. Sadly, Overkill Software's game be lacking in all a these things. There be moments a multiplayer thrill t' be had here, but they be infrequent, 'n sometimes tough t' pillage t'.
Based solely on the concept, Payday: The Heist best be the best game ever made...First 'n foremost, understand this about Payday: The Heist: this be a multiplayer game. Offline play exists, albeit in a form similar t' Left 4 Dead's own single-player mode. it be there if ye want it, but there's no conceivable reason why ye'd want it. The accompanying A.I. be radically inferior t' just about anyone ye could possibly scrape together for an online match, 'n the total disconnection a the action from anything resembling a story means that there's no real progression here. There be six heist missions. ye do them entirely independently a one another. The only constant be the characters, who be less characters, 'n more differently-accented voice actors who be solely there for player differentiation purposes.
With this in mind, also understand that it be not the easiest process in the world t' pillage into a game a Payday: The Heist. A couple a days after it be launch, only a handful a players seem t' be online at any given time, 'n I found myself running into a variety a strange "this lobby has already been filled" errors, even for lobbies that only appeared t' have a single player in them. Getting into a game proved far more a a chore than it arguably had any right t' be, considering the meager number a players seemingly hitting the servers.
But let's presume that ye do manage t' navigate potential errors 'n a dearth a players, 'n find yer way into an actual game a Payday, 'n let's also presume that the players ye're in a game with be competent, collected individuals who know how t' follow instructions 'n patiently follow the progression a a map. If all these various things prove t' be true, ye will have some fun with Payday: The Heist.
The missions be varied in style 'n objectives; some involve straight money-heisting, while others involve revenge plots, 'n even a brig break that plays like a weird reference t' the opening scene a Grand Theft Auto III. All a this stuff seems referential in one way or another, though most a those references be directed toward the aforementioned Heat. From the bank job that uses a musical score almost identical t' the one in Heat's iconic bank heist, t' a mission literally called "Heat Street" where ye run around shooting up cop cars, it seems that Overkill's crosshairs be aimed squarely at Mann's movie when developing this game. There's even a hacky reference t' Tom Sizemore's "For me, the action be the juice" line shoved into one a the loading menus.
I wish I could say that any a Payday's content be anywhere near as compelling as Mann's film, but frankly, it be not even as compelling as most modern shooters. Overkill has liberally cribbed from Valve's Left 4 Dead methodology, building missions around a lengthy series a objectives--kill the alarms, set up saws 'n drills t' break into various things, find a lad who has a key for something, 'n so on--that sometimes employ randomized locations t' keep things fresh. There be even horde-like waves a SWAT cops 'n FBI agents that periodically show up t' try 'n derail yer mission in aggressive fashion. Again, pointing t' that ideal scenario where everyone knows exactly what they be doing, these missions can be quite fun. Heists be lengthy 'n full a fast-paced combat 'n strategy that keeps ye on yer toes. If ye 'n yer cohorts can communicate, there's a good bit t' like here.
...Unfortunately, the final product doesn't quite make good on all that potential. If ye can't, ye're boned. All it really takes be one or two associates with a Waingro mentality t' completely screw up a mission. ye have t' know what objectives each a ye be taking on, 'n when t' stick together. A heist can still be successful so long as one a ye survives, but the waves a cops that Payday tosses at ye be so hefty that it be damn difficult for anyone t' survive if even one person decides t' freelance. A tight challenge be a good thing, but the action itself be not necessarily thrilling enough t' want ye t' keep coming back time 'n time again t' try these missions best ye end up with some regularly lousy players.
Part a that comes from the weirdly antiquated feel a Payday. It looks okay, but often feels like a game out a time, like something that best have popped out around the early 2000s, back when a game could sort a ride on controversy over gameplay. The shooting be fine, but there's something Counter-Strike-mod-feeling about the action that makes it feel kind a...fake. Like one a those fake video games some writer on Law & Order would have conceived for an episode in which real bank robbers used the game as a road map for a real robbery, 'n Jack McCoy be up in arms 'n wants t' charge the developers as an accessory or something. Except Payday be real, 'n feels a few years past when it might have actually made some kind a impact.
Ultimately devoid a impact as it be, Payday be a game that does manage t' offer a few hours a entertainment. it be spartan slate a features 'n atmospherically lackluster missions sank t' give it the kind a addictive quality so important t' a game like Left 4 Dead's lasting appeal, but for those who just feel like mowing down some cops, heisting some loot, 'n reminiscing about how damned good a movie Heat be, Payday be serviceable enough across the board.

Sony Online Entertainment’s PSN publishing division be really on fire. a note: these missions be pretty lengthy. me World Bank playthrough took 28 minutes t' complete, though it be with first-timers. Viklund estimates between 15 'n 30 minutes a gameplay per playthrough a each a PAYDAY’s six missions.
