#startrek If you're like me, you've wanted to actually see what the upcoming Star Trek tie-in plays and looks like. You have to put up with a lot of movie executive blather but there's a bunch of gameplay on display in this promo clip for the Digital Extremes-developed title. More »

The latest trailer for Star Trek: The Game shows off the daring heroism of a true bromance, this one between Kirk and Spock. It's OK, Spock, you can cry a little if you need to. This kind of love really gets to us, too.

Star Trek has been in development for over four hundred and fifty thousand years now. The game’s set between the two J.J. Abrams films, yet still calls itself simply “Star Trek”, presumably in a bid to be as impossible to Google for as is humanly imaginable. (They may as well have called it “Britney Spears”.) The release is currently set for April 23rd in the States, then it slowly drifts to Europe by the 26th. And today they’re promising us “the opportunity to explore the USS Enterprise.” And, the slow drip of two new screenshots (clickem to biggem).

#toyfair2013 Hasbro transforms and rolls out to the beat of its own drummer. The giant company held court at its own preview space during Toy Fair 2013, blocks away from the trade show's epicenter. On display were Star Trek and Transformers-centric updates to the Kreo building blocks, toys tied into this year's Thor: the Dark World movie—with sneak peeks at the film's rank-and-file enemies and a new look for the Thunder God—and new additions to the company's Avengers offerings, too. Some people talk. You know, with tongues and barbaric throat gurgles. Like peasants. But those people haven’t conquered entire entertainment industries using titanic minds and the entire world’s supply of lens flare alone. So naturally, Gabe Newell and JJ Abrams’ verbal sparring match drew a bit more attention than the average bout of watercooler small talk. Also, it helps when the conversation involves the formation of a new creative superteam, a verbal fist-bump between two seismically powerful entities. But where exactly do they want to take their respective mediums? Where do they see eye-to-eye, and what are the biggest sticking points? Straight from DICE in Las Vegas, here’s what Newell and Abrams chatted about.

#startrek Wanting to engage in the most literal type of role-playing there is, a woman has posted an as on Craigslist seeking "2 or 3 women for Star Trek roleplaying". The fact it has to end with the line "Nothing weird is going to happen" hints that, yeah, maybe some weird stuff is going to happen. At least by your everyday standards. More »

Star Trek, the co-op game set in J.J. Abram's rebooted movie universe, will launch on April 23, with pre-orders beginning tomorrow, December 21, at participating retailers. Star Trek is coming to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and will be available digitally via PSN.

All pre-orders get access to the Elite Officer Pack, which includes exclusive specialty items for the game's main protagonists, Kirk and Spock. Check out those bad boys in-game in the above screenshot. Looks like Digital Extremes is going for the "set phasers to stunning" look, no?

#startrek Star Trek turns 46 tomorrow and the nerds at Google aren't letting this anniversary go unnoticed. If you head over to Google's homepage and click on the letters done up as crew members, you'll embark on an adventure filled with references to classic original series episodes. (Side note: I had to tell Kotaku bossman Stephen Totilo what a Gorn was.) Okay, Google, you've got a NextGen Doodle ready for tomorrow, right? One that lets you fight the Borg? If not, make it so. #movies Last week, during Gamescom, the folks behind the new Star Trek game put out a good-looking trailer and some nifty screenshots. The ostentatiously-named Star Trek (in fact the fifty-third Star Trek computer game) isn’t due until early next year, despite trailers having been appearing since 2011. But trailers still they a-come, and Gamescom has revealed yet another. It’s an action-packed frenzy of Kirk-and-Spock shootyfighting, and far too few bleepy-bloopy computer noises for my liking. There are also ninety-six billion new screenshots, which you can see below.

The gorn will be a primary antagonists in the upcoming co-op-centric Star Trek game from Darkness 2 developer Digital Extremes. The humanoid lizards of the Gorn Hegemony are quite agile in the new game, a significant departure from their appearance in the "Arena" episode of the original Star Trek from 1967.

The race may come off as blood-thirsty killers in the new Star Trek, based off the JJ Abrams reboot of the space exploration franchise, but that's not how we remember them. The gorn are featured in one of the two most famous fight scenes in the original Star Trek series. Captain Kirk's fight with a gorn is generally accepted by those with eyes as hilariously bad, whereas his fight with Spock during the vulcan's pon farr is hilariously awesome.

We asked the developer during E3 if there would also be a Kirk v. Spock fight featuring the classic music in the game, but our question was deflected with shields at full power.

We've placed clips of both amazing fight scenes from the original Star Trek after the break.

#startrek Sadly, this is probably just a camera trick involving smoke and LED lights. But what if a man actually built a working Star Trek phaser? What if he used it to pop balloons? What if he brought it to a bank and took everybody hostage? What if he used all of the money to build more Star Trek devices, like a working spaceship with its own holodeck? What if his evil, bearded twin from a parallel dimension came out and challenged him to one-on-one combat for rulership of the universe? What if he won? What if he turned us all into tribbles? #opinion Over the past few weeks, I've been playing the American-made visual novel, Katawa Shoujo. Like the name of the genre implies, there is a heavy emphasis on the story to the point where you're almost reading as much as you would with a print novel. In fact on one path through Katawa Shoujo, there are a grand total of ten possible choices—ten moments of player input in the entire game. Upon realizing this, I began to question if visual novels are really games at all considering how little you do to affect what's happening on the screen. Of course, Katawa Shoujo is far from the only game I've played with virtually no gameplay. More »

If you want to wring maximum pleasure from this post, I suggest imagining every word coated in the tendril-like glue that is the movie/TV slow-mo deep voice sound effect. It is, after all, only fitting, given that the grand majority of the new Star Trek trailer drives well under the warp speed limit. Running, seemingly suicidal cliff diving, and a bit of covering shooting are the orders of the day here, but with the grace and poise of the creature we humans so desperately envy: the sloth. Admittedly, the whole thing looks a bit Gears-of-Star-Trek-War-ish, but well, not every game can be FTL. As is, I’m anticipating some light, easily digestible shooting action with the occasional heartwarming Kirk-Spock co-op BFF moment.  Beam past the break to watch the full trailer.
