‘Massively Online Tactical Action, eh? We’ve been wondering for several weeks now what a MOTA is, after this new acronym turned up applied to Jagex’s rebooted Transformers MMO. Turns out it’s Team Fortress 2 meets WoW PvP meets League of Legends, obviously. Even with a collection of Jagex staff noisily demoing the game to a room full of assembled hacks, it took a while to figure out what exactly was going on. … [visit site to read more]

I still don’t know what MOTA stands for. I mean, obviously it’s a play on MOBA, but is Jagex branding Transformers Universe as a Multiplayer Online Transformer Arena, or is there more to it than that? Is MOTA supposed to sound like “motor” when said aloud? Is it also “atom” spelled backward on purpose? We’re still in the dark (of the moon) on so much. But today we’re at least getting a look at one sorta important aspect of the MMO-abruptly-turned-battle-arena: how it, you know, plays. Unsurprisingly, you can turn into a car, so it’s a MOBA with mobility or something (hah). Also, it looks rather action-y compared to the likes of LoL and DOTA, something that stands to set it apart at least a little. Go below for two new trailers.

Off the back of news that Jagex’s Transformers MMO has bumblebeen re-imagined as a MOBAy thing comes a noisy old trailer full of big metal things hitting other big metal things. It also features several Notimus Primes and Megishtrons, suggesting that the game will be perfectly accommodating to anyone who prefers a simulacrum of their most beloved Cybertronians to playing with more bespoke bots. … [visit site to read more]

Hey kids, remember that Transformers Universe MMO that was being made by the folks who gave you Runescape? Jagex is still hard at work on that browser-based beast, and they've got a new, not-entirely-CG trailer to prove it. Read more...

We need a summit, where all game developers of the world gather together and decide of an agreed genre title for DOTA-clones. There’s MOBA, there’s ARTS, “hero-brawler”… We all have to agree on just one. In the meantime, Jagex, they behind the monolithic Runescape, have declared that their mysteriously silent Transformers Universe has chi-cha-cha-cho-chood from an MMO to one of whatever they’re called. In their case, a “Massively Online Tactical Action game”.

British development studio Jagex has let 13 workers go today, "confident" that the loss would not negatively impact its upcoming MMO, Transformers Universe.

"Having reviewed the remaining work required for the upcoming Transformers Universe launch we have made the decision to scale the development team back slightly," Jagex told Eurogamer in a statement today."We have always been committed to developing the highest quality games and services and are confident that this reduction will not adversely impact the game."

Transformers Universe is a free-to-play, browser-based MMO for Hasbro. It was unveiled by Jagex at Blizzcon 2011 and currently seeks beta applicants before a launch this fall.

Three or four years ago, I would have fallen to my knees and begged for a Transformers MMO. Today I would not, which is partly because I feel totally burned out on MMOs and partly because my knees increasingly make this unpleasant clicking noise if I bend them too abruptly. But you can be damned sure I’ll at least have a big old fiddle with the character creator in Jagex’s upcoming Transformers Universe even if the long-haul of levelling and whatnot is too galling.

Get a look at the first proper in-game footage below. Spoilers: robots.(more…)

The idea of a Transformers MMO is an especially interesting one. In large public spaces, how do you handle everyone's ability to shapeshift into a car, truck or plane at will? Jagex still isn't giving away much about the upcoming Transformers Universe, but did confirm a few more details about what t...

When The Transformers toyline was first released back in 1984, it didn’t waste any time: toys, comic, cartoon, branded stationery, the works. Boom: world domination almost overnight. It’s all so different for Jagex’s MMO Transformers Universe. Over the best part of the year, we’ve had a slow drip-feed of text-based annnouncement, mysterious concept art, a pre-rendered teaser and now a slightly longer pre-rendered teaser showing off character/art design and transformination style, which you can see below. Nothing in-game yet, however.

By my calculations, this trend means we will see a screenshot of the game itself by 2014. That’s approximately 900 days away, which by my maths would give you time to watch this 1m13s-long trailer some 1,065,205 times first. Better get to it, hadn’t you?(more…)

Little has been heard of the Transformers MMO since it was announced in March this year. It was known that Jagex, the studio behind Runescape, was developing the game and was targeting a 2012 release, and it was heavily hinted at that players would inhabit the cold, metal bodies of the Transformers themselves...
