I've been waiting weeks to write about Type:Rider. I've not been this excited about a mobile game in ages. It's all about learning the most important human achievement in the history of humans achieving things: typography — the art and technique of arranging letters to make language visible. Without it, kjfdflkjhsdflsdjfhsdg.Read more...

When the explosions fade and the last echoes of gunfire die, as the bruises and broken bones from the roundhouse kicks and dazzling special attacks slowly heal, there comes time for calm, peaceful reflection. That's the domain of Quell Memento. The third in a series of zen-like puzzlers from Fallen Tree Games, Quell Memento builds upon the theme of the original Quell and Quell Reflect, sifting through the jumbled memories of a life lingering within an old abandoned house. There is a story weaving in and out of these more than 150 clever logic and movement puzzles. As you navigate raindrops through obstacle-laden mazes, attempting to collect pearls in as few moves as possible, the voice of an elderly gentleman offers snippets of commentary on the life events the puzzles represent. New gameplay elements are introduced as we journey through this man's life, reflecting his emotions in puzzle form. For example, there's a set of 12 puzzles in a series called "A Cold Heart", which introduce ice and teleporting rings to the game. As one progresses through the puzzle, the inspiration for these elements become clear. The Proposal Unanswered Quell Memento is an amazingly clever, refreshingly thoughtful, and thoroughly relaxing puzzle game that will make you wonder how people will piece together the memories you leave behind one day. #pinwar Pinball translates quite well to the iPad, but it's generally a single-player experience, pass-and-play at best. Prank Entertainment's PinWar, coming to iOS on February 7, presents a novel way to get a pair of pinball wizards playing at once, at least until the iPad is thrown across the room. More »

#playthis Pixowl's The Sandbox places players in the role of a fledgling deity, grants them the power of pixel-particle elements, and sets them loose in their own single-screen world, free to do as they please. What pleases them seems to be drawing fan art. More »

Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition.
My ability to complete Another World is entirely rooted in memory at this point. To wit, the only reason I can finish it is because I've finished it. That's how it goes every time I play a new incarnation, and I struggle to imagine my younger self peering through the game's opaque sequences without the aid of a previous life.

And sometimes (just between you and me) I think it's just a bad game. Another World (which, holy crap, is twenty years old now) has almost no guidance, no user interface, it murders the bewildered protagonist without warning and, if it's your first time, progress seems to require pristine visions of the future. Not many developers would make a game like this today. Even fewer would let you drown within the first ten seconds of gameplay.

Two Eric Chahi games in two months! That's got to be a record. Of course, unlike From Dust, this second game is a remake, but it's still exciting. Publisher BulkyPix announced today that the iOS update of Chahi's classic action-adventure game Another World (known in America as Out of This World) will be released on September 22 as a universal iPhone/iPad app, for $4.99 / 3,99€ / £2,99.

The new version includes remastered graphics, which can be toggled with a two-finger swipe. It also has the option to use "new intuitive touch controls" or a virtual D-pad -- we're desperately hoping at least one of them will work.

The iOS remake also adds new difficulty levels -- both easier and harder than the original -- and remastered sound. This all sounds great, but, once again, we're wary of those controls.
