In a post-re-Rise-of-the-Triad world, any franchise reboot is possible. Case in point: Shadow Warrior. The original was a ninja-themed first-person shooter sliced and diced from Duke Nukem 3D‘s cloth – Build engine, unrepentantly offensive humor, and all – but it didn’t exactly have legions of lovers banging down doors for its long-overdue return. At least, not that I’m aware of. Maybe I should’ve looked in more shadows. Regardless, it’s coming back, and Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hog’s hefting the weighty, blood-rusted katana of responsibility.

I’d be lying if I said the art of Hard Reset was the most striking thing about it – I’d be more inclined to go with ‘shooting lots and lots of robots with nice lighting effects.’ Nonetheless, it’s jolly nice of devs Flying Wild Hog to offer up a free, 137MB PDF artbook, whose 46 heavily-illustrated pages contain concept art, environments, characters and all sorts. There’s some dramatic stuff there, suggesting a distinctive world made of bits of City 17, Blade Runner and Rapture. Assorted download links below, and if you haven’t played the game yet (it evoked mixed but just about positive feelings around these parts, though I’m not sure we’ve tried the extended edition/ Exile DLC yet) it’s currently 75% offski for the complete package on Steam. In other news, Windows 8′s built-in PDF reader is just the worst thing, so definitely don’t open the artbook in that.(more…)

Well, this sort of came out of nowhere – not that I’m complaining, mind you. After already waving its magically miserly wand and poofing our dusty old copies of Hard Reset into shiny Extended Editions for free, Flying Wild Hog’s seen fit to hand out yet another freebie. Titled “Exile,” it’s available now and sends Major Fletcher into “the Barrens – dangerous lands beyond the last human city of Bezoar, where our hero will meet new foes and make new friends.” Friendship always was my favorite part of Hard Reset.

Once upon a time we wrote a story about Hard Reset: Extended Edition, a retail version of Flying Wild Hog's downloadable title Hard Reset that includes five new levels, two new maps and a fresh backstory. Then the dragon killed the princess and the handsome prince married the ugly gold-digger. The End.

OK, not "the end" -- Flying Wild Hog has announced that Extended Edition is coming to Steam for free for those who already own Hard Reset, and will be available for download in the final week of April or first week of May. Hard Reset is available in the Indie Royale St. Patrick's Day bundle for a few more hours, for those who want Hard Reset: Extended Edition and three other indie titles for less than $5.

The End.

Indie Royale’s St Patrick’s Day Bundle includes the “old school” FPS Hard Reset, the awesome abstract 3D action puzzle game Vertex Dispenser, as well as Jolly Rover and DLC Quest. The current average is £3.19, with just over four days left. Paying over the average also bags you this Nintendo-inspired soundtrack.

Pretty-lookin’ cyberpunk robo-blaster Hard Reset – which John was amused but disappointed by – has received a big old patch, 1.2, which adds a Survival mode which “unleashes wave after wave of robotic hell upon the player, who has make good use of weapon upgrades to delay the inevitable as long as possible.” The mode is based in two new maps, and has a leaderboard setup so that Hard Reset adherents can fight their way to an obscure kind of fame with their survival skills.

The patch also “adds full NVIDIA 3D Vision and Surround support, as well as support for multiple displays.” So that’s fancy. The patch should automagic via Steam.

For how awesome the future has to be, we're not looking forward to the annoying parts of future-life: taking forever to download a weapon module; friendly AI terminal units "aiding" us; and, most importantly, all of the techno-spider things we'll have to shoot just to get to the bus stop.

Hard Reset might be the perfect game for anyone looking to rinse away the memory of Duke Nukem Forever for good. It's a simple, straightforward, totally crazy first-person shooter. You walk into areas, murderous enemies spawn and you use superpowered weaponry to shoot them until they die. Then you do it again...

Announced and released within just four months, the first game from Polish super-group Flying Wild Hog, Hard Reset, was something of a surprise to the world of PC. Dedicated to the platform, it’s a defiant thing: a first-person shooter with no multiplayer, no console vibe, and old-school shooter values, and it’s due out next Tuesday. So does it deliver in its specific niche. Having just completed it, I’m fully equipped to tell you Wot I Think.

The first mirror I’ve found for the demo of this “old school” PC-only shooter is here. The second is here. And it’s also on Steam. If you want something to read about what is in store for you while it downloads, you can go here. John says: “That’s mostly what Hard Reset is about. Having some weapons, and shooting at the enemies. Also, shooting at the scenery to make stuff blow up to destroy the enemies. And it’s no more sophisticated than that.”

Sounds okay. I’m downloading it right now. Race ya’!

Duke Nukem: Forever disappointed a lot of people earlier this year. I wanted it to give me a taste of the so-called "good ol' days" of first-person shooters. The big K has gone and recorded seven Imperial minutes of video footage of Hard Reset, the P.C. O.N.L.Y. FPS from newly formed Polish super-dev, Flying Wild Hog. It’s full of explosions, environmental interactions (usually involving explosions), fights with baddies, some explosions, some spectacular looking explosions environments. This is one to watch, says I. (more…)

Take two-thirds of a cup of Sin City, whisk vigorously with 14 ounces of powdered Ghost In The Shell, and then slowly add a generous tablespoon of gravelly voice acting. After an hour at 375, you'll have a piping-fresh tray of this Hard Reset story trailer. Mmmmmmm.

In the future, robots will excel at cooking breakfast, mowing the terraformed lawn and driving cabs on Mars. Today, they're designed to be destroyed without consequence or guilt. If you have to shoot something in a lineup of video game villains, the robot is less messy than the nazi and just a tad more relatable than the extraterrestrial insect.

It's in a shooter's best interests, then, that you prevent the artificial near-citizens of the future, as envisioned by Hard Reset, from overthrowing authority and hastening their own evolution. You enter the city of Bezoar (eww), a neon-lit pastiche of flying billboards, talking storefronts and Blade Runner's Los Angeles grit, with a straightforward mission in mind. Cover the streets in smoldering servos and protect a database of digitized human personalities. Let's file this preservation and attempted theft of what is easily humanity's least useful component under "suspension of disbelief," okay?

Hard Reset seemed to appear from nowhere. First a screenshot. Then a name and a video. Then a pile of screenshots. That started barely a month ago, with the game due out as soon as September. And then yesterday we found a few levels of the game arrive in our inbox. So I’ve had a play of this PC-only shooter. (The screenshots aren’t ours, as the code was watermarked, but those below are all new, and you can click on them for bigger versions.)

Why, twas only Sunday that Alec brought us the in-game footage of Hard Reset – the PC only shooter from Polish Travelling Wilburys-like developer best-of, Flying Wild Hog. Made up of developers from People Can Fly, CD Project and City Interactive. And today, for those who find moving pictures distracting and upsetting, I’ve some still images of the game in action. And for once the word “action” is actually appropriate. Okay, for one of the four, anyway. One other has some action. The other two would be rejected by any editor if you tried to submit them with a review.

Flying Wild Hog's first game, Hard Reset, may look a bit familiar at first glance. Considering the dev is made up of ex-Bulletstorm, Sniper and Witcher 2 staff, it's only natural FWH's first effort would be full of big guns. The nifty thing about this trailer though is that these aren't your typical big guns.

Time for a proper look at Hard Reset, the PC-exclusive FPS from new studios Flying Wild Hog, a supergroup of devs formely from CD Projekt Red, People Can Fly and City Interactive. The initial trailer was really just a bloke very slowly looking up, with occasional flashes of some manner of urban dystopia. This one’s a full minute of cyberbunk manshootiness aimed to demonstrate Hard Reset’s graphics card-troubling techno-clout, but take heart – it also includes more footage of a bloke slowly looking up. Except he doesn’t look very well this time.
