#monsterhunter A demo of Capcom's Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS was up for play at the Tokyo Game Show, and here's how the 15-minute gameplay was. They provided me with 3 different quests with a ranging difficulty of easy, medium and hard, and a premade set of armor for each of the special weapon in-game. I chose the newest weapon that will be available from MH4. The sochukon, which is literally translated the "insect controlling stick." (I'm hoping they'll find a better name for that) More »

- strike down foes from above by dashing off ledges
- this can also be done by falling off cliffs to land attacks
- every weapon will have unique jump attacks
- timing will vary between jump attacks
- some are easier to pull off than others
- this can result in an enemy stun, which lets you jump up and do a knife attack
- each stab fills up a a gauge
- the monster is flipped over to open up another attack when the gauge fills
- jump attacks for each weapon detailed

"Souchuukon" (Insect Weapon) – perform jumps in a pole vault like fashion to land a powerful slam

Great Sword – powerful downward slash

Long Sword – mid-air attack with the ability to perform a powerful jumping Spirit Slash after filling up the Spirit Gauge by striking down enemies

Sword and Shield – simple yet strong jump attack

Dual Sword – enter Demonization mode to perform an acrobatic mid-air whirlwind slashing move that can even include a finishing blow

Hammer – charge hammer and release it after a jump to land a devastating fully charged blow

Hunting Horn – similar to the Hammer minus the charge, but easier to pull off

Lance – one of only two weapons (the other being the "Souchuukon") that can perform jump attacks without the need of a platform, do a charging attack off a platform to land a piercing attack

Gunlance – jump off a ledge and land a smash attack followed up with a full burst finish as a powerful combo, also go straight to the full burst attack off a jump

Light/Heavy Bowgun – now able to reload while jumping

Switch Axe – Will have the ability to perform a switch attack in mid-air from Axe to Sword or Sword to Axe mode

- the 4 in Monster Hunter 4 is read as English-speakers would read it
- previous Monster Hunter games had numbers that made for play-on-words in Japanese
- the change was made to reflect the changes the series is seeing in its 4th installment
- the logo also highlights the Monster Hunter branding more than previous games
- the original trailer showed a special section that highlighted the game's new actions
- the characters in that trailer were all player-controlled
- the key word the dev team is focusing on this time is 'adventure'
- hunters are hired by a caravan leader and travel with the caravan
- you'll visit a variety of lands
- there are a ton of villages with their own cultures and people
- this should raise the drama level of gameplay
- the first village you'll visit in the game is called "Barubare"
- this location has a feeling of a marketplace to give players the sense of being in a gathering spot for many people
- travel here to register your hunters
- some villages have special places that can't be found at other locations
