Bravely Default is a massive game, and one of the best examples of the genre available on the 3DS. While it harkens back to a simpler time, it still offers more than enough complexity to keep players engaged for a long time.

This is one of the best original RPG experiences Square Enix has done in a long time. Luckily, the sequel is already confirmed and on its way already, but I admit I almost want to see what Silicon Studio could do on a home console with Square Enix's resources, even with just a mid-sized digital download game.

Rating Category: Teen

Content Descriptors: Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol

Other: Includes online features that may expose players to unrated user-generated content (Nintendo 3DS)

Rating Summary: This is a role-playing game in which players help a band of heroes save the fantasy kingdom of Luxendarc. From a 3/4 overhead perspective, players traverse the land, explore dungeons, and engage in turn-based combat against human characters and fantasy creatures (e.g., goblins, dragons, giant insects). Players use weapon attacks and abilities that are depicted with light effects, slashing sounds, and mild explosions; more elaborate attacks (e.g., summoning spells) are depicted with short animated sequences. A handful of scenes depict instances of blood: a blood-like effect as a monster is slashed across the stomach; bloodstains on an enemy's sword. During the course of the game, the dialogue contains references to suggestive material (e.g., “I would be happily obliged to make space in my own bed for you,” “At this rate I shall be compelled to clasp you to my breast, and plant a kiss upon your lips”). The game includes occasional references to wine and beer usage; a barkeeper and patrons are depicted drunk in several text/dialogue interactions.

The penny whistle is so hot right now. If you played the Bravely Default demo, chances are you were a bit swept up in the fantastic world-map music. Perhaps you were also reminded of Ni No Kuni's excellent world-map music. That's probably because both compositions prominantly feature the penny whistle (or tin whistle), rising above the orchestra in that special lilting way it has. See also: The Lord of the Rings and Titanic, among others.Read more...

Some minor issues, including an atrocious endgame, keep Bravely Default from reaching true excellence, however. With the sequel having been announced, hopefully this fairy can fly even higher.

This is for those of you playing the demo right you. You may need to turn off auto-saving and make sure you haven’t hit a certain point.

Play up to the point where you get the quest for killing the second boss, Adamantite.

Save your game before talking to that NPC. He is somewhere between the spell shop and equipment shop during the day.

Talk to him, and then check that your villager count has increased by 1.

Go talk to the Adventurer and choose “To title”, and then load up your save file again.

Now just talk to the villager-giving NPC again, and you should receive another villager!

Bravely Default is a great start for this new Square Enix franchise, and proves that allowing other developers to craft the types of RPGs that have been long-missed by the Final Fantasy company's fans can lead to extremely positive results. This is one game any RPG fan should be setting money aside for, whether they already own a Nintendo 3DS or not.
