Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is dropping some hot pre-order bonuses across the UK, if fans order early through Game, Play, Shopto and other independent retailers. Pre-ordering from Game gets players a code to unlock the G1 Retro Pack, which includes a playable G1 Optimus Prime from the original 1980s animated show, for both single and multiplayer campaigns. The G1 Retro Pack also includes the G1-inspired Megatron gun and Shockwave Blast Cannon for single-player runs.

Play pre-orders unlock Swoop, the flying Dinobot, for multiplayer. Shopto and other independent retailers will offer the G2 Bruticus skin, taken from the classic toyline model, for single-player.

#transformers Transformers: Fall of Cybertron's online multiplayer mode allows players to create their own bastardized versions of classic characters, from a guy that looks vaguely like Warpath to a puke green and brass Optimus Prime. Customization, Starscream? This is bad comedy. More »

Activision has a whole mess of stuff planned for this year's San Diego San Diego this weekend, starting with the first taste of multiplayer in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

High Moon Studios will announce a new Marvel game (likely Hit Monkey) during a panel on Saturday, and Activision will also show off new footage of both 007 Legends and the recently announced FPS tie-in for The Walking Dead. Much like a Transformer itself, the launch date for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has turned into something else entirely. Specifically, the planned launch of August 28 has transformed into August 21, a full week earlier. Activision has also released a new trailer featuring Metroplex, the gigantic Transformer who (we're assuming) turns into a fully functional movie theater.

#transformers That's not to degrade the rest of the game, which is due out this fall. It looks just fine. It's just a testament to how glorious Metroplex is. I mean, transforming into a fighter jet or a truck is cool, I guess, but transforming into a city? That's how you get stuff done. More »

#transformers Transformers is not just about giant robots shooting other giant robots. It's about giant robots shooting other giant robots with character. Developer High Moon Studios showed it had a lot of love for the Transformers franchise with War for Cybertron but sullied its goodwill with fans when a rushed Dark of the Moon movie tie-in follow-up hit store shelves. Now the studio's returning to Hasbro's toy line once again, leaving behind the Michael Bay-inspired setting of the films.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, on the surface, seems like a return to High Moon's true love: telling its own stories about giant, talking transforming robots. Separating itself from the films, Fall of Cybertron leaves High Moon free to geek out about Autobot and Decepticon history, wrapping it all up in Gears of War-style third-person shooter gameplay. And as High Moon said about the first game way back when, the emphasis here is supposed to be on freedom, and the unique ability to play as a robot or vehicle, switching whenever you want.

But for all of High Moon's enthusiasm about transforming, the demo on display at E3 was less-than-flattering to the series and its promise of complete freedom.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is coming out on PC after all, which means I now have free rein to get all over-excited about it – even if I am worried by all the grey corridors of its predecessor and the terrible choice of music in the below trailer. But, sound and pre-renderness aside, gosh! What a lot of fan service is in here. It’s got all my favourites – Shockwave, Bruticus, the Dinobots, Metroplex…. All that’s missing is my beloved psychopath Galvatron, my old, poorly-painted miniature model kit of which you can see above. Of course, they’ll need to kill off Megatron to get him in, but as technically FoC is a prequel to the familiar Transformers crashed-on-Earth-and-started-fighting-again tale I guess that can’t happen. Boo! They could go down the nu-comics route of making Galvy an entirely different character, but that’s just stupid. STUPID!

ANYWAY. Trailer! Exciting robots! Awful music! An Autobot the size of a city! Also on PC! Please have wide-open areas like this video suggests!(more…)

By their very nature, Transformers are adept at changing forms and adapting to new situations. So, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the Autobot's forthcoming adventure on Cybertron should so effortlessly transmogrify itself from a console title to a PC game.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will launch on PCs on August 28, 2012, concurrent with the game's console release on PS3 and 360. Keep in mind, this is the PC release of a Transformers game, and not the release of a PC Transformer, like we had originally inferred. Alas, the day when we'll be able to go on thrilling adventures with a wise-cracking anthropomorphized laptop is still somewhere over the horizon.

So I haven’t actually played Transformers: War For Cybertron, but Alec liked “the bit where the robot punched the other robot.” If there is a more ringing endorsement – aside from, hypothetically, “it let me punch, kick, crush, blast, boil, mash, blend, throw the sun at, and gravely insult Shia Labeouf” – I’ve yet to hear it. For the longest time, however, its upcoming sequel was confined to the robo-space-planet of Consoletropolistopiatron, because developer High Moon Studios felt it wasn’t capable of delivering an up-to-par port. Fair enough – given that War’s port was a bit shoddy. Still though, nothing isn’t generally better than something. So now, High Moon’s passing the baton that turns into a fully featured kitchen off to the aptly named Mercenary Technology.
