(The ugly portmanteau in the title is because damnable Uplay’s damnable cloud saves system destroyed and rewound over three hours of my progress, which has kept me from getting as far into Black Flag as I’d hoped. It also meant I lost a bunch of sea shanties, which was upset me the most. Is this is Wot I Think? Is it mere Impressions? It’s both and neither. Isn’t that helpful. PS in the name of all that’s holy, turn off cloud saves in Uplay before you start playing AC4).

It’s the best Assassin’s Creed yet! Which is 90% because Black Flag, a a third-person action adventure about pirates in the Caribbean, isn’t really an Assassin’s Creed game in the traditional sense, and 10% because the lead character is from Swansea.(more…)

Developers for the next installment of Ubisoft's hit historical adventure series talk about what Sony's upcoming console lets them accomplish. Action figures? Little desktop statues? Those are for coward collectors. Those who really want to make a statement - and scare off home intruders (particularly British ones) - spend over $3000 on a giant statue of Assassin's Creed III's Connor Kenway. Standing nearly seven feet tall, he's available for preorder from French (I guess that explains the smooching?) company Attakus. You can see a making-of video below, which is actually pretty interesting, as it's got a nice mix of hand-crafted art and hypnotic machine work involved. Assassin's Creed 3 level design director Jamie Stowe recently joined Peter Molyneux's 22Cans studio. Stowe will assume the role of technical director for Godus, the developer's spiritual successor to Populous. Stowe worked at Codemasters as a QA lead and level designer prior to joining Ubisoft Singapore in 2009.

22Cans successfully raised £526,563 ($852K) on Kickstarter in December 2012 to fund Godus' development. Molyneux and his crew posted a new video update to 22Cans' Facebook page, which welcomes Stowe to the team.

I’m actually afraid to play Assassin’s Creed III’s Tyranny of King Washington DLC. It’s been on my List Of Vaguely Tantalizing Curiosities for quite some time, but I’m sick with worry that it can’t possibly live up to the madness its trailers boast. I mean, so far we’ve seen ghost eagles, mind-controlled Benjamin Franklin, and Washington sauntering – dual pistols cocked and lips slyly pursed – like he’s on a catwalk at some eeeeeevil fashion show. And now? Now there is a pyramid. In the middle of New York. For those not in the know/possibly from space, that is not a place where pyramids traditionally go. Watch the trailer and join me in wondering what manner of strange, wonderful brain worm has infested Ubisoft after the break.

The final chapter of Assassin’s Creed III‘s three-part Tyranny of King Washington single-player DLC series is nearly upon us! The mad King George Washington has retreated within his New York stronghold and Ratonhnhaké:ton must prepare an assault against Washington’s incredible fortress.

As the stakes continue to rise in Ratonhnhaké:ton’s pursuit of Washington, so too must his strength and ferocity. Calling on an ancient source of might, Ratonhnhaké:ton must once again risk his sanity to embark on a mysterious and dangerous Sky Journey in order to release the Power of the Bear.

The Power of the Bear enables Ratonhnhaké:ton to strike the ground with such immeasurable force that all nearby enemies will be hurled into the air or crushed into the ground. Even more remote enemies will be staggered by the concentration of will and raw power, making the Power of the Bear an effective method of crowd control.

Like Ratonhnhaké:ton’s other abilities (Eagle and Wolf), the Power of the Bear can even be used from rooftops, unleashing a devastating surprise aerial attack that will leave his foes nothing but broken heaps on the ground.

The Tyranny of King Washington – Episode 3: The Redemption will be available for Season Pass-holders or for $7.99 on Tuesday, April 23rd! For more information please visit www.assassinscreed.com/dlc.

Remember, you can save on all downloadable content for Assassin’s Creed III by purchasing a Season Pass. You can learn more about the Assassin’s Creed III Season Pass at: www.assassinscreed.com/seasonpass.

During a panel at GDC today, Ubisoft writer Corey May and lead mission designer Philippe Bergeron discussed their "balancing act" in crafting the stories of Assassin's Creed. May is focused on building up the story, making the characters and their relationships important to the player, while Bergeron and his colleagues aim to deliver fun mission gameplay, and stay within the various technical and developmental limitations shared by the entire team.

May and Bergeron both focus on research at the outset of the process. For each Assassin's Creed game, the team has picked an era first, and then looked for potential locations, specific events to portray, major characters, "potential Templar targets," and possible protagonists. While May picks characters, Bergeron's team brainstorms various mission ideas for the game.

May said Ubisoft has an internal document containing "101 gameplay ideas." It has been pillaged and refilled since the first Assassin's Creed game, as designers sample previously unused ideas or add more when concepts don't make the cut during development of the latest game.

Finally, May said, once all the mission plans are completed and his early script scenes are done, he takes the mission design documents and pastes them directly into a file that eventually becomes his finished script for the game. May said this process was "the ultimate expression of our collaboration," and that mission designs created by Bergeron's team are then used as "the skeleton and the backbone that I work off of."

Once the script and designs are all completed, the real work of coding and testing the game begins. May and Bergeron's teams cycle down (or, most likely, move on to the next game in the process).

The talk was a simple look at an undoubtedly complex process, but it did offer some good insight into the marriage of story and mission design in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

George Washington? More like Jerk Washingtonsofbutts. I’m sorry. I haven’t slept much lately, and any time that’s the case, my ability to cleverly insult implausibly mad re-envisionings of cherished historical figures is always the first thing to go. But I’m pressing on regardless, just like our tree-toothed, grumpyfaced bizarro pal Georgie Scourgie in Assassin’s Creed III: The Tyranny Of King Washington Episode II: Betrayal (And Counting!). So then, what nefarious deeds is he up to this time? Rescuing kittens from exceedingly high buildings for the sole purpose of frightening them back up again? Chopping down every cherry tree in the nation and lying about it just because he can? Nope. But he is making Benjamin Franklin all kinds of sad, which is just the most heartbreaking thing ever. See for yourself after the break.

The Betrayal, the second chapter in Assassin’s Creed III‘s The Tyranny of King Washington single-player DLC series, comes out today on PSN. Trapped in captivity by the vicious King Washington, Ratonhnhaké:ton must free himself and seek aid to overthrow Washington’s ruthless machinations. Check out the video below for a run-down on what to expect.

Similar to the Power of the Wolf, Power of the Eagle has two different uses. First, it enables Ratonhnhaké:ton to soar from one location to another quickly and invisibly as a ghostly eagle. You activate this ability by looking in the direction you want to go… if the Power of the Eagle is available to use, you will see a reticle appear with two wings. Once you press the button to activate the ability, Raton will transform into an eagle and streak towards the new location completely unseen! Best of all, you can use this ability while running or jumping to dramatically increase the distance of your jumps or even save yourself from a nasty fall.

Of course, the Power of the Eagle would not be complete if it didn’t include some kind of offensive component as well. Consequently, we’ve included the Eagle Strike, which will enable you to power dive into a foe, ending their life with the swiftness of a deadly raptor. Will this extraordinary ability be enough to ensure that Ratonhnhaké:ton can stand against King Washington and his remaining lackeys Israel Putnam and Benjamin Franklin?

In The Tyranny of King Washington: The Betrayal, Assassin's Creed 3's Ratonhnhaké:ton can turn into an eagle. This follows his previous invisibility cloak ability. Just saying, super-human feats are what make people stand out in a crowd, not sneak quietly through it with arm-blades.

Assassin's Creed 3's "The Tyranny of King Washington" is weird y'all. Not only does it propose Native Americans as a hyperthermic people, but apparently Ratonhnhaké:ton is also descended from the Predator race. Assassin's Creed 5: Predator vs. Templar shipping in 2014.

#assassinscreed The developers behind the Assassin's Creed series have always been proud of how much effort they put into maintaining a thin veil of historical accuracy. That's most evident in the settings, from Revolution-era Boston to the Holy Land during the Crusades, where that veneer of accuracy goes much deeper. But it's there in the plot, as well, despite the presence of deific holograms and a secret order of superhero Assassins. More »

A few German websites spotted an Assassin's Creed 3: Washington Edition lurking in a digital hay pile. If legitimate, it'll be a bundle that includes all of the DLC launched so far, along with the game itself, due out on March 28 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Washington Edition comes with the Hidden Secrets, Battle Hardened and Tyranny of George Washington packs. Hidden Secrets has three extra missions, two costumes for solo play and two characters for multiplayer, while Battle Hardened has three new maps and three fresh multiplayer characters. The Tyranny of George Washington pack comes in three single-player installments, the first of which is out now, and explores an alternate reality where Washington is a power-hungry dictator.

The German listings put Assassin's Creed 3: Washington Edition out in Europe on March 28 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, for €70 for consoles and €55 for PC. Though the complete Tyranny DLC won't be out by March 28, the Assassin's Creed Season Pass unlocks those installments as they drop.

Ubisoft had no comment regarding a potential US launch for the Washington Edition. Previously, the Assassin's Creed Anthology launched in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and skipped North America.

I think that was my country’s first President’s name. Something like that. Honestly, I’m fuzzy on the details, because history was never my strong suit, and I secretly pledge my allegiance to the vengeful, cursed spirit of Mummy King Ramses II. But yes, Assassin’s Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washingface episode one has officially ridden a star-spangled, single-tear-propelled eagle onto Steam, Uplay, and the like. You may tomahawk your way to its historically inaccurate heart as you please. But first, you must watch a trailer. Otherwise, you won’t get a proper preview of Connor’s fancy new clothes. They’re quite spiffy. I bet he even gave them a thorough rinse in one of those – argh, what do you call ‘em? – oh, right: Washingtons.
